Designing something people will print, post or hand out

For shop owners announcing an offer, families inviting guests, small businesses that need a logo, a card or a letterhead, authors with a cover to make and anyone posting for a festival.

How to choose

Choose by what the design is for:

For print, set the page size and the resolution before you design, so the file comes out at true size.

Worked example: an A4 poster designed at 300 dpi

A poster is designed for an A4 sheet at 300 dots per inch, which makes the canvas 2,480 × 3,508 pixels.

  1. At 300 dpi, 2,480 pixels across is 2,480 ÷ 300 = 8.27 inches, and 3,508 down is 11.69 inches.

  2. A PDF measures pages in points, 72 to the inch, so the page is 2,480 × 72 ÷ 300 = 595.2 points wide and 841.92 points tall.

  3. That is the A4 sheet, 210 × 297 mm, so the poster prints at its true size with nothing scaled.

  4. A design without a print size is treated as a screen image at 96 pixels to the inch instead, which is why the print export asks for the resolution first.

Questions

What resolution should a printed poster have?

Around 300 dpi at the size it will be printed for anything read up close; large posters seen from a distance can use less. Setting the size and the dpi before you start keeps text sharp.

What is bleed, and do I need it?

Bleed is a few millimetres of the design that run past the trim line, so a colour reaches the edge after cutting. Flyers, cards and brochures going to a print shop need it; screen images do not.

Can I use the logos and fonts commercially?

The logo maker draws on fonts and icons released under open licences, which generally allow commercial use; check the licence of anything you add from elsewhere.

Which size should a social post be?

Each platform crops to its own shapes, square, portrait or a wide banner. The post maker shows the same design in every size so you can see what each platform will cut.
