Masks are approximate: Apple uses a continuous-curve rounded square, and Android launchers each pick a shape. The dashed circle is the 66 dp safe zone that no Android mask cuts; keep a logo’s box within 66 dp too.
About the App Icon Generator (iOS, Android, macOS)
Start from one square image — ideally 1024 × 1024 px, or an SVG — and get every icon your app needs: an Xcode AppIcon.appiconset for iPhone and iPad (one 1024 px icon with optional dark and tinted variants, or every legacy size) with its Contents.json, an Android adaptive icon (foreground, background colour and monochrome layers for mdpi to xxxhdpi, with the XML), legacy launcher PNGs, the 512 × 512 Google Play icon, and the macOS and Apple Watch icon sets.
Previews show the icon with the masks the systems apply — iOS’s rounded square, Android’s circle and squircle with the 66 dp safe zone, and Google Play’s rounded corners — so you can size the artwork before downloading. Everything is generated in your browser and downloads as one ZIP. For website icons, use the Favicon Generator.
How to use it
- Choose your image: a square PNG, JPG or WebP of at least 1024 × 1024 px, or an SVG. A logo on a transparent background gives the most options.
- Set Fill or Fit, the artwork size and the background colour (opaque artwork gets its own edge colour automatically).
- Check the previews; on Android keep the important part inside the dashed 66 dp safe zone.
- Pick the platforms and options: iOS single size or all sizes, dark and tinted variants, macOS shape, Android legacy and monochrome icons.
- Press Download ZIP and copy each folder into your project (the README in the ZIP says where).

</adaptive-icon>Common uses
- Setting up the icon of a new iOS, Android, Flutter, React Native or Capacitor app.
- Replacing the default launcher icon before a store release.
- Making the 512 px Google Play listing icon and the 1024 px App Store icon from the same artwork.
- Adding dark, tinted and themed (monochrome) icons to an existing app.
What the sizes are
- iPhone and iPad: Xcode makes every size from a single 1024 × 1024 image; dark and tinted variants are added as appearances in the same
Contents.json. Apple asks for the dark icon on a transparent background and the tinted icon as a grayscale image (Apple: configuring your app icon). All sizes writes the older set (20, 29, 40, 60, 76 and 83.5 pt at 1×–3×, plus the 1024 px marketing icon) for projects that still list every size. - macOS needs each size: 16, 32, 128, 256 and 512 pt at 1× and 2× (up to 1024 px).
- Apple Watch: one 1024 px image in the watch app’s icon set.
- Android adaptive icons: layers of 108 × 108 dp — 108, 162, 216, 324 and 432 px for mdpi, hdpi, xhdpi, xxhdpi and xxxhdpi. The outer 18 dp on each side is for masks and effects, and the logo should not exceed the inner 66 × 66 dp (Android: adaptive icons). The monochrome layer is used for themed icons from Android 13. Legacy icons are 48 dp (48–192 px).
- Google Play: 512 × 512 px, 32-bit PNG in sRGB, up to 1024 KB, as a full square — Google Play rounds the corners (a radius of 30% of the icon) and adds the shadow itself (Google Play icon specifications).
Transparency and backgrounds
Google Play asks for icons without transparency, and the light and tinted iOS icons are filled too, so the tool paints them on your background colour and writes them without an alpha channel. The Android foreground layer keeps the transparency, and the background colour goes into values/ic_launcher_background.xml. The dark (iOS), tinted (iOS) and monochrome (Android) icons are made from a logo with a transparent background: the tinted icon is its shape in white on black and the monochrome layer the same shape in white on transparent. Shape and shading also keeps the brightness of each part, so light details inside a colour logo stay visible; Shape suits dark logos. Those options need an image with transparency.
macOS shape
Apple’s current guidelines say the system masks iOS, iPadOS and macOS icons to their rounded shape, so the default is a full square. If your Mac app also supports older macOS versions, which show app icons exactly as drawn, choose Rounded square with margin: the artwork is drawn on a rounded square inset from the edges, the way Mac icons were drawn for those versions — compare it with Apple’s macOS app icon template from Apple Design Resources. Apple’s newest layered icons (Icon Composer .icon files) are made in Xcode’s Icon Composer; this tool produces asset-catalog images, which Xcode still uses for apps that support earlier releases.
Limitations
- Icons are flat images. Liquid Glass layers (Icon Composer), tvOS and visionOS image stacks are not generated.
- The previews approximate the masks: Apple’s icon shape is a continuous-curve rounded square, and Android launchers use many shapes.
- Very detailed artwork may not read well at 16–40 px; check the macOS and legacy sizes in the ZIP and simplify the artwork if needed.

Frequently asked questions
What size should my source image be?
At least 1024 × 1024 px, square, or an SVG (it is drawn at 2048 px). Smaller images are enlarged and look soft on the App Store icon and on high-density Android screens.
Why are the iOS and Google Play icons not transparent?
Google Play asks for an icon without transparency (transparent parts show Play’s own background colour), and Apple asks for a transparent background only in the dark iOS variant. So the tool fills the iOS and Google Play icons with your background colour and saves them without an alpha channel; the dark variant keeps its transparency.
Where do the Android files go?
Copy the folders inside android/res into app/src/main/res of your project, merging them with what is there. The manifest then uses android:icon="@mipmap/ic_launcher" and android:roundIcon="@mipmap/ic_launcher_round".
Do I need the legacy Android icons?
Only if your app supports Android 7.1 or older (minSdk below 26). Newer versions use the adaptive icon in mipmap-anydpi-v26.
Is my image uploaded?
No. The image is opened, resized and packed into the ZIP by your browser.
