About the Book Cover Maker
Design one cover and get every file a self-published book needs: the eBook cover at the size KDP recommends (1,600 × 2,560 pixels, an RGB JPEG of 5 MB or less) and the full-wrap print cover — back, spine and front on one sheet with bleed — sized from your trim size, page count and paper for Amazon KDP, from the spine width of your IngramSpark template, or from any printer’s paper thickness. The geometry is the same as the Book Cover & Spine Width Calculator: KDP’s spine thickness per page, 0.125 in bleed, safe margins inside the trim and the spine folds, and the barcode area kept clear.
Type the title, subtitle, author, series line, back-cover blurb, a review quote and your bio; add a photo or illustration; pick a genre style (thriller, romance, fantasy, science fiction, literary, non-fiction, memoir, children’s, horror or poetry) made of open-licensed fonts; and change the layout, colours and title size. Words always stay inside the safe areas, spine text appears only when the printer allows it, and the page checks picture resolution at 300 DPI. With a Pro pass, or once your cover is unlocked, download the print PDF, the full wrap and the front as 300 DPI PNG or JPG, and the eBook JPG.
How to use it
- Under Book, choose Amazon KDP, IngramSpark or Another printer, then the trim size, page count and paper (IngramSpark: the spine width from its cover template; another printer: its paper thickness, bleed and safe margin).
- Under Words, type the title, subtitle, author and series line, and the back cover’s blurb, review quote, bio and publisher name.
- Under Pictures, choose your cover picture, and pick which part stays in view; tick Across the whole wrap for artwork painted for the full cover. Add an author photo or a publisher logo if you like.
- Under Style, choose a genre style, then change the layout, title position and size, and the colours.
- Under Barcode, keep the area clear for your printer’s barcode, or add your own ISBN barcode with an optional price add-on.
- Switch the preview between Print cover, Front and eBook, turn Guides on to see the trim, folds and safe areas, and read the checks. With a Pro pass, or once the cover is unlocked, download the print PDF, the pictures and the eBook JPEG; without one the preview stays watermarked.
Examples
Amazon KDP · 6 × 9 in · 300 pages · white paper · Thriller style
A full-wrap sheet of 12.926 × 9.25 in (3,878 × 2,775 px at 300 DPI) with a 0.676 in spine carrying the title and author, and the 2 × 1.2 in barcode area beside the spine kept clear.
Amazon KDP · 5 × 8 in · 60 pages · cream paper · Poetry style
A 0.15 in spine with no words on it: KDP prints spine text only on books with more than 79 pages, so the page keeps the spine blank and says why.
View: eBook
A 1,600 × 2,560 px RGB JPEG of 5 MB or less, the front design laid out again for the eBook’s taller shape.
Common uses
- Self-publishing on Amazon KDP: the Kindle cover and the paperback cover from one design.
- Books printed through IngramSpark or a local printer, laid out on their spine width.
- A cover draft to test genres, titles and colours before you hire a designer — or a finished cover when the picture is your own.
- Pictures of the front for store pages, ads and social posts, at 300 DPI.
Sizes the files follow
- eBook (KDP): 2,560 pixels high by 1,600 wide recommended, JPEG, 5 MB or less, RGB (Kindle does not support CMYK). Covers under 500 pixels on their shortest side are not shown on the store. KDP suggests a narrow medium-grey border for light covers; tick Thin grey border.
- KDP paperback (KDP): one PDF with back, spine and front as one image, 0.125 in of bleed on the top, bottom and outside edges, text at least 0.125 in inside the trim lines, spine text only from more than 79 pages and 0.0625 in from the spine’s edges, images at 300 DPI, no template text or crop marks. KDP counts pages in twos, so an odd page count is rounded up for the spine.
- IngramSpark (File Creation Guide): 0.125 in bleed on all four sides, 0.25 in type safety (its templates allow 0.125 in), spine margins of 0.0625 in (0.03125 in on spines under 0.35 in), no spine text on perfect-bound books under 48 pages, and a barcode on every cover — or an area at least 1.75 × 1 in for theirs.
The print PDF
The PDF holds the whole cover as one flattened 300 DPI picture on a single page the exact size of the cover with its bleed, with the page’s TrimBox and BleedBox set — what KDP asks for: back, spine and front together, flattened, no layers, guides, crop marks or template text. Because the words are part of that picture, there are no fonts that could go missing. Choose JPEG inside for a smaller file (KDP recommends 40 MB or less) or PNG inside to keep fine lettering lossless.
KDP recommends CMYK images for print, but a browser draws in RGB, so the PDF is RGB: its colours become the printer’s CMYK inks when the book is printed and may shift, so order a printed proof. IngramSpark asks for CMYK PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-3 files on its own template: place this page’s full-wrap picture on that template in a desktop-publishing program that exports PDF/X.
Colours, pictures and checks
- Picture resolution: the page works out how many pixels per inch your picture has at print size and warns below 300, KDP’s minimum for images.
- Colours that may shift: very bright, saturated screen colours often print duller once they are turned into CMYK inks. The page names them; order a printed proof copy before launch day.
- Words: every text box stays inside the safe areas and away from the barcode area. A title or blurb that does not fit is shrunk, and shortened with “…” only when it still does not fit — the page says which one to shorten.
- Thin spines: below the printer’s page count for spine text, or when the spine is too thin for readable letters, the spine stays blank.
Genre styles and fonts
Each style is a starting point: a typography preset of open-licensed fonts (SIL Open Font License) — Bebas Neue and Anton for bold condensed titles, Great Vibes and Dancing Script for script, Caveat for handwriting, Montserrat, Poppins and Inter for clean sans-serif type, Noto Sans for most scripts — with colours and a layout that suit the genre. Pick another layout, colours or title size at any time; your words and picture stay.
Limitations
- Paperback covers only: hardcover case wraps have hinge and wrap areas of their own.
- Layouts are templates you adjust with settings; you cannot drag words or draw freely. For free-form design, use the Graphic Design Editor and place the result on the template from the Book Cover & Spine Width Calculator.
- The bundled fonts are sans-serif, display, script and handwriting faces; there is no serif typeface among them.
- Files are RGB, so colours may shift when they are printed in CMYK inks; printers that require CMYK PDF/X files need a desktop-publishing program for the last step.
- Print files are drawn at 300 DPI in your browser, which handles up to 8,192 pixels on a side (about 27 in) and 40 megapixels: covers larger than that, from large trims of other printers, cannot be made here, and the page says so before you unlock anything.
- Pictures you add are used only while the page is open; the words and settings are kept in this browser.

Frequently asked questions
What do I get without a pass?
Without a pass, Book Cover Maker shows your cover at preview size (up to 640 pixels) with a MySmartCoPilot watermark, which is also the one page of its print PDF. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.
Can I upload the print PDF to KDP?
It is built to KDP’s published cover rules: one page of back, spine and front with 0.125 in bleed, 300 DPI, flattened, with no guides or template text. KDP still reviews every file, so check the previewer it shows after you upload.
Why is there no text on my spine?
KDP prints spine text only on books with more than 79 pages, and IngramSpark not on perfect-bound books under 48 pages. Even above those counts a very thin spine leaves too little room for readable letters inside its margins, so the page keeps it blank.
Do I need a barcode on the cover?
For KDP, no: if your cover has none, KDP places one in the area the page keeps clear. IngramSpark asks for one on every cover, or an area of at least 1.75 × 1 in for theirs. To add your own, choose Add my ISBN barcode and type the ISBN with its hyphens.
What size should my eBook cover be?
KDP recommends 2,560 pixels high by 1,600 wide, as an RGB JPEG of 5 MB or less, which is what the eBook view makes. You can set another size for other stores.
Can I use the cover commercially?
Yes, with a Pro pass or after unlocking it: the layouts and styles are this site’s own, the fonts are open-licensed, and under the terms you may use what you make here for personal and commercial purposes. You need the rights to the picture you add. The preview on this page carries a MySmartCoPilot watermark; the files you download with a pass are clean.
Are my words and pictures uploaded?
No. The cover is drawn in your browser, and the files are made there too. The only download is the cover fonts, from this site, the first time you use them.
