Paychecks, tax returns, retirement accounts and immigration in the United States follow federal law and, often, rules that differ from state to state. The tools here are grouped by the job, and each one works from the figures and details you enter. Rules and rates change, so check a result with the IRS, the Social Security Administration, USCIS or your state before you file, sign or apply.

The main tools

Federal rules and state rules

Most money questions in the US have two layers. The federal government sets income tax, Social Security and Medicare tax and the limits on retirement accounts, and the IRS and the Social Security Administration run them. States add their own income tax (a few have none), sales tax and often a higher minimum wage, and some cities and counties add taxes of their own.

The tools follow the same split. The paycheck calculator takes out federal withholding, Social Security and Medicare, then your state’s income tax where its withholding method is loaded. The sales tax calculator adds the local rate to the state’s, and the minimum wage checker compares the state’s minimum with the federal one, because an employer covered by both must pay the higher. The income tax and capital gains calculators work out federal tax only, so add your state’s income tax to their results.

Worked example: A first year as a freelancer

  1. Work out the self-employment tax on your profit, and the quarterly estimated payments that cover it, with the self-employment tax calculator.

  2. See the federal tax for the whole year, with any wages, interest or gains you also have, in the federal income tax calculator.

  3. Bill your clients with the invoice generator, and plan what you put away for retirement with the 401(k) & IRA calculator: an IRA needs no employer.

Questions and answers

Do these tools file anything with the IRS or my state?

No. They work out figures and prepare documents for you to check. You file your return yourself or through a preparer, and the forms the 1099 & W-2 preparer builds go to the IRS and the Social Security Administration through their own filing services.

Why does the tax withheld differ from the tax I owe?

Withholding is worked out pay by pay from your Form W-4, so it rarely matches the year’s tax exactly. A bonus, a second job or a change during the year moves the figures, and your return settles the difference with a refund or a payment.

Are the legal documents valid in every state?

They follow general US practice and flag the state rules they check, such as the usury limit for a promissory note or a state’s own bill of sale and title forms. Laws differ between states, so for a large or unusual matter ask a lawyer licensed where you live.
