Result
Two swapped digits away
These numbers differ from yours by two neighbouring digits swapped, and pass the check. Only the provider’s records or the NPI Registry say which one is right.
The check-digit working (CMS)
Who it belongs to
This page checks the format only. The NPI Registry shows the provider’s name, type and address: copy the NPI, open the registry and search by number.

About the NPI Number Validator (US)
A National Provider Identifier (NPI) is the 10-digit number every HIPAA-covered health care provider in the United States uses on claims, superbills and credentialing files. Its last digit is a check digit: CMS computes it with the Luhn formula as if the card prefix 80840 came first, so most typing mistakes — one wrong digit, two neighbouring digits swapped — make the number fail the check.
Type or paste one NPI to see whether it passes and the working step by step, or paste a whole list — a column from a spreadsheet, a roster of providers — or open a CSV file and pick its NPI column. Each number that fails says why: not 10 digits, characters that are not digits, a first digit other than 1 or 2, or the wrong check digit (with the digit it should be). The check runs in your browser; nothing is sent anywhere.
It tells you whether a number is well formed, not whether it is assigned or to whom: look that up in the official NPI Registry.
One number is checked and explained in full for everyone. For a pasted roster or a file the free preview shows every count and the first rows of the table; the rest of the table, the CSV report and the copied list of valid numbers unlock with a Pro pass.
How to use it
- Type an NPI, or paste a list with one number per line (several on a line separated by commas also work; a number inside a line of text is picked out).
- For a spreadsheet, choose CSV file, open the file and pick the column that holds the NPIs (a column named “NPI” is picked for you).
- Read the result: a valid number shows its check-digit working; a bad one shows the reason and, for a wrong check digit, numbers two swapped digits away that would pass.
- For a list, filter to the problems; with a Pro pass copy the valid NPIs or download the results as CSV — for a file, the file itself with an “NPI check” column added. Without a pass the list stays a free preview.
Examples
1234567893
Valid. 24 + the digit sums of the doubled digits (2, 6, 1, 5 and 9) + the other digits (2, 4, 6 and 8) = 67; the next number ending in zero is 70, so the check digit is 3.
1234567890
Not valid: the check digit must be 3, not 0.
1234567839
Not valid (the check digit must be 6). Swapping the last two digits gives 1234567893, which passes — check it against the provider’s records.
808401234567893
Valid: the NPI 1234567893 with the 80840 prefix a health ID card puts in front of it.
Common uses
- Checking a provider’s NPI before it goes in box 24J or 33a of a claim, or on a superbill.
- Cleaning a roster or a credentialing spreadsheet: the bad rows are marked in the file itself.
- Testing the NPI field of your own billing software with known good and bad numbers.
How the check digit works
CMS describes the calculation in its NPI check digit requirements:
- double every other digit of the first nine, starting with the ninth (positions 9, 7, 5, 3 and 1);
- add the digits of those products (14 counts as 1 + 4) to the four digits that were not doubled, and add 24 — the sum the prefix 80840 would contribute;
- subtract the total from the next number ending in zero: that is the check digit (0 when the total already ends in zero).
The constant 24 is why a plain Luhn check of the ten digits, as for a card number, gives a different answer: 1234567893 fails it, while 808401234567893 passes. The Luhn Validator runs that plain check; this page adds the prefix for you.
What a valid result does and does not mean
A number that passes has the right length, starts with 1 or 2 (CMS issues NPIs with one of those first digits) and has the right check digit. It may still not be assigned, belong to another provider, or have been deactivated. An NPI has no meaning built into it: you cannot tell an individual (type 1) from an organization (type 2), or a specialty or state, from the digits. The NPI Registry shows who an NPI belongs to.
Limitations
- A format check only: it does not look numbers up in the NPI Registry, so it cannot say whether an NPI is assigned, active or the right provider’s.
- Up to 20,000 numbers at a time; the table shows the first 500 of them and the CSV report has them all.

Frequently asked questions
What do I get without a pass?
Without a pass, NPI Number Validator (US) shows one number checked in full with its working, and for a list every count with its first rows; the rest of the table and the exports stay locked. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded or copied. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.
Why does my NPI fail the check?
Usually one digit is mistyped or two neighbouring digits are swapped; the result says which digit the check expects. A letter O typed for a zero, a missing digit or an extra one are reported as such. Copy the NPI from the provider’s own records, or look it up in the NPI Registry.
Does a valid result mean the NPI is real?
No. It means the number is well formed. Whether it is assigned, and to whom, only the NPI Registry can say; this page does not query it.
Can I check a whole spreadsheet?
Yes. Save it as CSV, choose CSV file, open it and pick the NPI column. Every row is checked, problems are listed by their row number in the file, and you can download the file back with an “NPI check” and an “NPI problem” column added.
What does the free preview show?
A single number is checked in full: the verdict, the reason it fails and the CMS check-digit working, for everyone. A pasted list or a file shows every count — checked, valid, not valid, repeated — and the first rows of the table; the rest of the table, the CSV report and the copied list of valid numbers unlock with a Pro pass.
Why do some NPIs start with 80840?
On a health identification card the NPI can appear as a card issuer number, after the prefix 80840 (80 for health, 840 for the United States). The check digit is the same either way, and a 15-digit number that starts with 80840 is read as the NPI after it.
