Income tax in Canada combines federal and provincial rates. Sales tax, the minimum wage and land transfer tax differ from province to province, while retirement accounts, benefits and immigration points follow federal rules. The tools here are grouped by the job, and each one works from the figures and details you enter. Rules and rates change, so check a result with the CRA, IRCC or your province before you file, sign or apply.

The main tools

Federal and provincial, side by side

Your income tax is a federal amount plus your province’s or territory’s, each with its own brackets and credits; outside Quebec, the CRA collects both through one return. Pension contributions and EI premiums come off every paycheque as well. The income tax calculator works out both levels of tax for your province, with the credits for your CPP and EI contributions.

Sales tax shows the provincial split most plainly: some provinces charge one harmonized sales tax, some charge only the federal GST, and others add a provincial sales tax to it. The sales tax calculator fills in the rates for the province you pick.

Saving, benefits and a home

An RRSP contribution lowers your taxable income now and is taxed when you withdraw it; a TFSA takes money already taxed and never taxes it again; an FHSA works like both for a first home. The RRSP, TFSA and FHSA calculator works out your room in each and which one suits you. The Canada Child Benefit shrinks as family income rises, which the CCB calculator shows for your children’s ages.

Worked example: Buying a first home in Toronto

  1. Work out your FHSA and RRSP room, and the tax each contribution saves, with the RRSP, TFSA and FHSA calculator.

  2. Test the mortgage against the stress test, with mortgage loan insurance if your down payment is small, in the mortgage calculator.

  3. Add Ontario’s and Toronto’s land transfer taxes, less the relief for first-time buyers, with the land transfer tax calculator.

Questions and answers

Does a high CRS score mean I will be invited?

Not on its own. The CRS calculator works out your score from IRCC’s published criteria, but each Express Entry round sets its own cut-off, and some rounds invite only certain programs or occupations.

Which minimum wage applies at a bank or an airline?

Federally regulated employers, such as banks, airlines and telecom companies, pay the federal minimum wage, or the provincial one where it is higher. The minimum wage checker asks which kind of employer you have.
