About the Credit Report Dispute Letter Generator (US, UK, India)
A wrong entry on your credit report — an account that is not yours, a closed loan shown as open, a late payment you made on time, a debt you settled shown as written off — can cost you a loan or a better rate. The law in each country makes the credit bureau look into a written dispute and correct what it cannot verify: within 30 days in the US (Fair Credit Reporting Act), with an answer within 28 days in the UK (Consumer Credit Act 1974, section 159), and within 30 days in India under the Reserve Bank of India’s rules, with ₹100 a day of compensation after that.
Choose your country and the bureaus — Equifax, Experian and TransUnion in the US and UK; TransUnion CIBIL, Experian, Equifax and CRIF High Mark in India — and list each wrong item with what the report shows, what it should show and your proof. The tool writes one letter to each bureau, a letter to the lender that reported the information, and in the UK a notice of correction of up to 200 words. The checks give the deadlines, the identity-theft steps and the next step when the answer is no: the CFPB, the Information Commission or the Financial Ombudsman, or the RBI Ombudsman. Items found by the India Credit Report Checker arrive in the form ready to edit.
The free preview shows every page with your details and the first part of the wording, and hides the rest; a Pro pass unlocks the letters to download as Word or PDF, copy or print.
How to use it
- Choose your country and tick the bureaus whose reports show the error (get your report from each of them first).
- Enter your details as the report shows them, and the report’s number and date.
- Add each wrong item: the lender or source, the account, what is wrong, what the report shows, what it should show and your proof.
- Tick Write to the lender too if the lender reported the wrong information, and in the UK add a notice of correction if the agency has not acted.
- Read the Checks. With a pass, or after unlocking this result, download the DOCX or PDF, sign the letters and send them with copies of your proof; in India you can attach the letter to the bureau’s online dispute form.
Examples
Equifax and Experian · a card closed in March 2025 shown as open · a payment made on time shown 30 days late
Two bureau letters asking for a reinvestigation within 30 days under 15 U.S.C. § 1681i, and a letter to the auto lender under § 1681s-2 asking it to correct the bureaus’ files.
TransUnion CIBIL · loan shown as “settled” · no-dues certificate
A dispute asking for the status “closed”, citing RBI’s framework: resolution within 30 calendar days, then ₹100 a day of compensation, with the reasons for any rejection.
Experian · letter sent, no answer within 28 days
A notice of correction of up to 200 words to add to the entry, and a complaint to the Information Commission if the error stays.
Common uses
- A loan or card you never had, or one opened by a fraudster in your name.
- A loan you closed, or a settled account you paid in full, still shown as open or written off.
- A late payment reported for a month you paid on time.
- A wrong name, address, date of birth or PAN on your report.
- Hard enquiries from lenders you never applied to.
United States: the Fair Credit Reporting Act
Dispute in writing with each bureau that shows the error — by mail, or on its website — and with the business that supplied the information. The bureau must reinvestigate at no cost to you and correct or delete what it cannot verify within 30 days of receiving your dispute (15 more if you send new information in that time), passes your dispute to the business within 5 business days, and sends you the results within 5 business days of finishing, with a new copy of your report if it changed (15 U.S.C. § 1681i). On request it must tell those who received your report in the past six months (two years for employment) about a correction. For identity theft, send an identity theft report from IdentityTheft.gov with proof of who you are: the bureau must block those items within 4 business days (15 U.S.C. § 1681c-2). The mailing addresses are the ones the FTC gives; send letters by certified mail with a return receipt.
United Kingdom: section 159 and the notice of correction
Write to the credit reference agency and to the lender that supplied the data. By law the agency must tell you within 28 days of your letter whether it has removed the entry, amended it or taken no action, and send you any amended entry. If it does not reply, or keeps the entry, you then have 28 days to ask it to add a notice of correction of up to 200 words that anyone looking at the entry will see — the tool writes one for each agency, with the date left for the day you send it — and you can complain to the Information Commission. A lender has one calendar month to answer a request to correct its data (ICO: credit); for a complaint about a lender, it has 8 weeks to send its final response, and you then have 6 months to go to the Financial Ombudsman Service.
India: the RBI’s rules for credit information companies
Raise the dispute with the credit information company — TransUnion CIBIL, Experian, Equifax or CRIF High Mark — usually through the dispute form on its website, or with the lender. Under the RBI’s compensation framework, a complaint must be resolved within 30 calendar days of when you first filed it; if not, you are entitled to ₹100 for every day of delay, paid into your bank account within 5 working days of the resolution, the lender having 21 days of the 30 to send corrected data. You must be told the action taken and the reasons for any rejection (RBI framework). Lenders must also alert you when they report a default, and each company must let you see your full credit report, with your score, once a year at no cost (RBI circular). If the complaint is rejected or not resolved in 30 days, the RBI Ombudsman covers credit information companies: file at cms.rbi.org.in within 90 days — the Ombudsman Complaint Generator writes it.
Paid credit repair
Disputing errors with the bureaus costs nothing, and anything a credit repair company can do legally you can do yourself. No one can legally remove information that is accurate and current, and in the US a credit repair company may not charge you before it has helped you; one that tells you not to contact the bureaus is a warning sign (FTC). Dispute only what is wrong.
Limitations
- A generic template, not legal advice. It does not tell you whether an entry is accurate: dispute only what is wrong, and keep copies of your proof.
- Bureau addresses for the US and UK are the ones the FTC and the ICO publish; check them on the bureau’s website before you post a letter. For India, use the address or online form the company gives.
- It writes one letter to one lender at a time; for several lenders, change the lender and download again.
- Not a credit score, and it cannot see your report: you enter the items yourself, or bring them from the India Credit Report Checker.

Frequently asked questions
What do I get without a pass?
Without a pass, Credit Report Dispute Letter Generator (US, UK, India) shows every page with your details, the first part of the wording readable and the rest hidden, marked “MySmartCoPilot preview · not for use”. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded, copied or printed. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.
How long does a credit bureau have to answer a dispute?
In the US, 30 days after it receives your dispute (15 more if you send new information meanwhile). In the UK, the agency must tell you within 28 days of your letter what it has done. In India, the complaint must be resolved within 30 calendar days of filing, or you are owed ₹100 a day.
Should I dispute with the bureau or the lender?
Both, when the lender reported the mistake: the bureau must check with the lender, and the lender must correct its data with every bureau it reports to. The tool writes both letters.
What should I send with my dispute?
A copy of your report with the items marked, proof of your identity and address, and copies (never originals) of documents that show the error: a closure letter, a no-dues certificate, a bank statement showing a payment, an identity theft or police report.
Can I remove a late payment that was really late?
No. Accurate and current information can stay on your report; the US allows most negative information for seven years and bankruptcies for ten. Dispute only information that is wrong, incomplete or out of date.
What if the bureau rejects my dispute?
In the US, add a statement of dispute to your file and complain to the CFPB. In the UK, add a notice of correction and complain to the Information Commission (or to the Financial Ombudsman about a lender). In India, complain to the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in.
Do I have to pay for a CIBIL dispute?
No: raising a dispute with a credit information company costs nothing, and under RBI’s rules each company lets you see your full credit report, with your score, once a year at no cost.
