    About the Word Counter

Type or paste text and the counts update instantly: words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and lines. It also estimates how long the text takes to read silently and to say out loud, and lists the words you use most.

Words are detected with your browser's Unicode rules, so emoji, accented letters and scripts such as Hindi are counted correctly — not just English.

    How to use it

    1. Type in the box, or paste text from a document, email or web page.
    2. Read the live counts above the box. Nothing needs to be submitted.
    3. Check Most used words to spot repetition, and Reading time to fit a word limit or a speaking slot.

    Common uses

    • Keeping essays, applications and assignments within a word limit.
    • Fitting social posts, ad copy and meta descriptions into character limits.
    • Estimating how long a speech or video script will take.
    • Finding overused words while editing.

How words and characters are counted

A word is a run of letters or digits; apostrophes and hyphens inside a word (don't, well-known) keep it as one word. Punctuation and emoji on their own are not words.

A character is what you see as one symbol — so an emoji with a skin tone, or an accented letter, counts as one character even though it is stored as several code units. Bytes (UTF-8) shows the storage size, which matters for some databases and SMS limits.

Reading time assumes about 225 words per minute; speaking time assumes about 140 words per minute, a comfortable presentation pace.

    Limitations

    • Sentence counts are estimates: unusual punctuation or abbreviations can affect them.
    • Reading speed varies a lot between people and texts; treat times as a guide.

    Privacy

Everything happens in your browser. What you enter or open here is not uploaded or stored by MySmartCoPilot.

    Frequently asked questions

    Do spaces count as characters?

Yes in Characters, no in Characters (no spaces). Many forms and platforms count spaces, so check which one your limit uses.

    Is my text saved anywhere?

No. The counting happens in your browser and nothing is sent to a server. If you close the tab, the text is gone.

Why is my count different from Microsoft Word or Google Docs?

Editors differ in how they treat hyphens, numbers, URLs and punctuation. Differences are usually a few words in a long document.
