About the Typing Speed Test

A typing test in English or Hindi (Unicode Devanagari, typed with your own InScript, Remington Gail or phonetic keyboard). Choose 1, 3 or 5 minutes, a time of your own or no limit, and type a passage from classic public-domain books — Jane Austen, Dickens, Tagore and Kipling in English, Premchand in Hindi — or paste any text of your own.

While you type, the passage shows each correct and wrong letter, and the timer, gross and net WPM and accuracy update live. At the end you get the full result and the keys you got wrong most often, with what you typed instead. Results are kept only in this browser.

How to use it

  1. Choose English or Hindi, the time and a passage (or Your own text, then paste it).
  2. Click the typing box and start typing — the timer starts with your first key. For Hindi, switch your computer or phone to its Hindi keyboard first.
  3. Type the words as shown, with a space after each word. Wrong letters turn red; you can fix them with Backspace.
  4. When the time is up (or the passage is finished, or you click Finish now), read your net and gross WPM, accuracy and the key mistakes. Try again repeats the passage; Next passage gives you a new one.

Examples

How the numbers are worked out
Input
1 minute, 260 characters typed (spaces included), 4 words with a mistake left in
Result
Gross WPM = 260 ÷ 5 ÷ 1 = 52
Net WPM = 52 − 4 ÷ 1 = 48
Accuracy
Input
270 keystrokes, 12 of them wrong when typed (8 later corrected)
Result
Accuracy = (270 − 12) ÷ 270 = 95.6%

Corrected mistakes still count against accuracy, but not against net WPM.

Common uses

  • Checking and improving your speed before a job or exam typing test.
  • Practising Unicode Hindi typing in InScript or a phonetic layout.
  • Finding the keys you mistype most, to practise them on purpose.
  • Timing yourself on your own work text, for example legal or medical terms.

How WPM and accuracy are calculated

Typing speed is measured in words per minute, where a “word” is any 5 keystrokes, spaces and punctuation included — so long and short words count fairly, in any language.

  • Gross WPM = characters typed ÷ 5 ÷ minutes.
  • Net WPM = gross WPM − (words with a mistake left in ÷ minutes). Each word that still has a wrong, missing or extra letter counts once.
  • Accuracy = keystrokes that were right when you typed them ÷ all keystrokes. A mistake you fixed with Backspace still lowers accuracy.

The text is checked word by word: a slip in one word never makes the following words wrong. Extra spaces between words are ignored. Straight and curly quotes count the same, and so do -, – and —.

Typing in Hindi

The Hindi test checks Unicode Devanagari, the text that every modern Hindi keyboard produces. Set up a Hindi keyboard first: on Windows, add Hindi under Settings › Time & language › Language & region and choose Hindi Traditional (InScript) or Hindi Phonetic; on a Mac, add Devanagari – InScript or Hindi – Transliteration under Keyboard › Input Sources; on Android and iPhone, add a Hindi keyboard in the keyboard settings.

Letters are compared one Unicode character at a time, as the keyboard types them (कि is क + ि). The danda । can also be typed as . or |. The dot of क़ ख़ ग़ ज़ फ़ is optional because the passages leave it out, but ड़ and ढ़ are letters of their own and must be typed.

The passages

The English passages are openings of public-domain classics, quoted from Project Gutenberg: Pride and Prejudice (Jane Austen), A Tale of Two Cities (Charles Dickens), Gitanjali poem 35 (Rabindranath Tagore), The Jungle Book (Rudyard Kipling), Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (Lewis Carroll), A Scandal in Bohemia (Arthur Conan Doyle), Three Men in a Boat (Jerome K. Jerome) and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (Mark Twain). Quotes are written as straight quotes so that they can be typed.

The Hindi passages are openings of Premchand’s stories पंच परमेश्वर, शतरंज के खिलाड़ी and सवा सेर गेहूँ, from the Hindi Wikisource transcriptions of early editions; a few obvious scanning errors were corrected by comparing editions. Premchand died in 1936, so his works are in the public domain in India. For tests of 3 minutes or more, the next passages follow on so that you never run out of text.

Tips for a faster, cleaner result

  • Keep your eyes on the passage, not the keys.
  • Aim for accuracy first: every mistake you leave in costs as much as a whole word in net WPM.
  • Practise the keys in your mistake list for a few minutes, then test again.
  • Take the same length of test each time, so results are comparable.

Limitations

  • Kruti Dev and other legacy Hindi fonts are not Unicode, so text typed with them cannot be checked; use a Unicode keyboard (InScript, Remington Gail or phonetic).
  • Phonetic keyboards turn several keys into one letter, so for Hindi the page counts the characters that arrive, not the keys you pressed.
  • Exams such as government typing tests have their own rules for counting mistakes; this test uses the common gross/net WPM method described above.
  • Results are saved only in this browser and are lost if you clear its data.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between gross and net WPM?

Gross WPM counts everything you typed. Net WPM takes off one word for every word you left with a mistake, so it rewards accurate typing. Net WPM is the figure usually meant by “typing speed”.

Can I take a Hindi typing test with my InScript keyboard?

Yes. Choose Hindi, switch your system to its InScript (Hindi Traditional) keyboard and type. Remington Gail and phonetic keyboards work too, because the page checks the Unicode text they produce.

Why is my accuracy lower than I expected?

Accuracy counts every wrong keystroke, including the ones you later corrected with Backspace. It shows how cleanly you type, while net WPM only counts mistakes left in the text.

Can I use my own text?

Yes: choose Your own text in the passage list and paste any text — English or Hindi. The test is checked against exactly that text.

Are my results stored anywhere?

Only in this browser (your recent results are listed under the test). Nothing is sent to a server.
