Income tax, USC and PRSI, the minimum wage, stamp duty and mortgage limits in Ireland follow rules set by Revenue, the Central Bank and Irish law, and some rules for businesses come from the EU. The tools here are grouped by the job, and each one works from the figures and details you enter. Rules and rates change, so check a result with Revenue or your lender before you file, borrow or buy.

The main tools

Income tax, USC and PRSI

Three deductions come off an Irish payslip: income tax at the standard and higher rates less your tax credits, the Universal Social Charge, and PRSI. Your employer applies them using the details Revenue sends for you, so register a new job with Revenue before your first payday to avoid emergency tax. The income tax calculator works out each payday and the whole year, with pension relief or auto-enrolment and the rules for married couples and civil partners.

Buying a home

The Central Bank’s mortgage measures cap how much a lender may lend against your income and how small your deposit can be, with different limits for first-time buyers and for everyone else, and lenders may make a few exceptions. The mortgage borrowing calculator applies both limits with Help to Buy for a new home. Stamp duty is paid by the buyer, and on a new home it is charged on the price without VAT, as the stamp duty calculator works it out.

  2. See what each payday leaves after income tax, USC and PRSI with the income tax calculator.

Questions and answers

Do the EU tools apply to Irish businesses?

Yes. Ireland applies the EU’s rules on VAT between businesses, so check a customer’s number with the VAT number validator before you invoice without VAT, and the pay gap report works out the indicators the EU Pay Transparency Directive asks employers for.

Does every part of my pay count towards the minimum wage?

No. Basic pay, shift premiums and some bonuses count; overtime premiums, tips, service charges and most allowances do not, and board and lodgings from your employer count at fixed amounts. The minimum wage checker takes off what does not count and shows your real hourly rate.
