About the Amazon FBA Calculator (US): Fees, Profit & ROI
This calculator works out what a sale on amazon.com earns when Amazon stores and ships it (Fulfillment by Amazon), before you buy stock or list the product: the referral fee for its fee category, the size tier and the shipping weight from its packaged dimensions and weight (dimensional weight included), the FBA fulfilment fee for that tier and price band with the fuel and logistics surcharge, monthly storage, an optional inbound placement fee, the closing fee on media and the low-inventory-level fee. Add what the product costs you, shipping to Amazon, prep and advertising, and it gives the profit, margin, ROI, the break-even price and the most you can pay a supplier for the ROI you want — beside what the same sale leaves when you ship orders yourself.
The rates are transcribed from Amazon's own fee pages — the fee schedule, FBA fulfilment fees and product size tiers — and carried as a numbered preset; every rate the result uses can be replaced with your own. Check a finished listing against Amazon's own Revenue Calculator.
Without a pass, the free preview shows the Amazon fees per unit in full, with the first rows of each table and the first step of the working; the profit, margin, ROI, break-even price, the most to pay a supplier, the comparison with fulfilling it yourself, the summary copy and the CSV need a Premium pass, or unlocking this one result.
How to use it
- Choose the product’s fee category, which sets the referral fee, and the rate card: most products, apparel or dangerous goods.
- Enter the price and the packaged length, width, height and unit weight, in inches and pounds or in centimetres and kilograms.
- Pick the season: non-peak rates, or the holiday peak rates Amazon charges for units shipped from mid-October to mid-January.
- Enter your costs per unit: what the supplier charges, shipping to Amazon, prep and labels, advertising and anything else.
- Open FBA options for SIPP packaging, inbound placement, low inventory, storage months and your selling plan, and Fulfil it yourself to compare shipping orders yourself.
- Read the profit, margin, ROI and break-even price; set a target ROI to see the most you can pay the supplier. Copy the summary or download a CSV with a Premium pass, or after unlocking this result.
Examples
Large standard; unit weight 3.35 lb beats the 3.29 lb dimensional weight Fulfilment fee $6.97 + 2 × $0.08 = $7.13 (non-peak), $7.67 (holiday peak)
The figures on Amazon’s FBA fulfilment fee page. The 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge comes on top: $0.25 on $7.13.
Referral $3.75 · fulfilment $5.04 · surcharge $0.18 · storage $0.07 = $9.04 in Amazon fees Profit $6.65 · ROI 97.8% on $6.80 · break-even $17.16 · most to pay for a 50% ROI $8.16
Dimensional weight 9 × 6 × 3 ÷ 139 = 1.17 lb, above the 1.1 lb unit weight, so the fee is for 1 to 1.25 lb.
Extra-large 50+ to 70 lb on its 65.47 lb dimensional weight $37.32 for the first 51 lb + 15 × $0.75 = $48.57 (non-peak)
Size tiers and the weight Amazon charges
Amazon sorts each packaged unit by its longest, median and shortest side, its weight and its length plus girth (girth = 2 × (median + shortest side)):
- Small standard: up to 16 oz and 15 × 12 × 0.75 inches.
- Large standard: up to 20 lb and 18 × 14 × 8 inches.
- Small Bulky: up to 50 lb and 37 × 28 × 20 inches, length plus girth up to 130 inches.
- Large Bulky: up to 50 lb and 59 × 33 × 33 inches, length plus girth up to 130 inches.
- Extra-large: anything bigger or heavier, in four weight tiers (0 to 50, 50+ to 70, 70+ to 150 and over 150 lb). An Extra-large unit up to 150 lb that is over 96 inches long or 130 inches in length plus girth is Overmax and pays a handling fee on top.
Dimensional weight is length × width × height in inches ÷ 139; for Small Bulky, Large Bulky and Extra-large units the width and height count as at least 2 inches. The fee is charged on the greater of the unit weight and the dimensional weight, except for Small standard and Extra-large 150+ lb units, which use the unit weight. Sources: product size tiers, dimensional weight.
Fulfilment fees: price bands, seasons and the surcharge
Fulfilment fees depend on the size tier, the shipping weight and the item price: under $10 (Amazon's low-price rates), $10 to $50 (both ends included) and over $50. Apparel and dangerous goods have their own rate cards. From mid-October to mid-January Amazon charges holiday peak rates for every unit that leaves its warehouse in that time, whenever it was ordered. A fuel and logistics surcharge of 3.5% is added to the fulfilment fee.
The calculator also adds the low-inventory-level fee when you say the product's days of supply are under 28, the Ships in Product Packaging (SIPP) discount for certified standard-size units, the packaging fee for Bulky units that are not SIPP-enrolled and the Overmax handling fee ($17, $21 or $25 by tier). Sources: FBA fulfilment fees, low-inventory-level fee, SIPP, Overmax.
Referral fees and the closing fee
The referral fee is a percentage of the total sales price — the item price plus any shipping and gift wrap the buyer pays, without tax — or a per-item minimum, usually $0.30, whichever is greater. Most categories pay 15%. Some take one rate on the whole price by its size (Beauty and Baby: 8% at $10.00 or less, 15% above; Grocery: 8% at $15.00 or less; Clothing: 5%, 10% or 17%), and some charge a lower rate on the part above a limit (Furniture: 15% up to $200, 10% above; Jewelry: 20% up to $250, 5% above; Watches: 16% up to $1,500, 3% above). Books, music, video, DVD, software and video games also pay a $1.80 closing fee. Source: Selling on Amazon fee schedule.
Storage, inbound placement and your plan
Monthly storage is charged on the unit's cubic feet (length × width × height ÷ 1,728): $0.78 a cubic foot from January to September and $2.40 from October to December for standard-size units, $0.56 and $1.40 for Bulky and Extra-large, with higher rates for dangerous goods. Sellers whose stock covers more than 22 weeks of sales pay a storage utilisation surcharge on inventory older than 30 days. The inbound placement fee applies when you send a shipment to fewer locations than Amazon wants: Amazon publishes a range per size and weight and charges within it by location; Amazon-optimized splits (five or more identical boxes per item) pay none. The Professional plan costs $39.99 a month; the Individual plan $0.99 per item sold. Sources: storage fees, inbound placement.
Profit, ROI and the most you can pay a supplier
- Profit = price − Amazon fees − product cost − shipping to Amazon − prep − advertising − other costs.
- Margin = profit ÷ price. ROI = profit ÷ (product cost + shipping to Amazon + prep): what each dollar you put into stock earns.
- Most you can pay for a target ROI = (price − Amazon fees − advertising − other costs) ÷ (1 + ROI) − shipping to Amazon − prep, rounded down to the cent.
- The break-even price and the price for your ROI are found to the cent, checking each price with the rounded fees and both sides of every price where a fee changes, so a price that drops into the under-$10 band is not missed.
Limitations
- For amazon.com (the US store) only: other Amazon stores have their own fees.
- The rates are preset v1, transcribed from Amazon’s pages; Amazon changes its fees from time to time, so compare the preset with the linked pages and replace any rate that has changed.
- Amazon measures products itself, and its measurements decide the fees. Two of Amazon’s pages differ on whether Large standard items get the 2-inch minimum for dimensional weight: the calculator follows the size tier pages and says when the other reading would change the fee.
- Not included: returns processing, removal and disposal fees, the aged inventory surcharge, coupon, deal and Vine fees, the refund administration fee, sales tax and Multi-Channel Fulfillment.
- The inbound placement fee is a range that depends on where Amazon sends the shipment; the calculator uses the top of the range unless you enter your rate.
- Income tax on your profit is not worked out. MySmartCoPilot is not affiliated with Amazon; check fees against your seller account.

Frequently asked questions
What do I get without a pass?
Without a pass, Amazon FBA Calculator (US): Fees, Profit & ROI shows the Amazon fees per unit in full, with the first rows of each table and the first step of the working; every other figure is hidden. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded or copied. A Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.
How much does Amazon FBA cost per unit?
It depends on the size tier, the weight and the price. A Large standard unit of 1 to 1.25 lb priced $10 to $50 pays a $5.04 fulfilment fee outside the holiday peak, plus the 3.5% surcharge ($0.18), the referral fee (usually 15% of the price) and storage. The calculator adds every line for your product.
How does Amazon work out dimensional weight?
Length × width × height in inches ÷ 139. A 9 × 6 × 3 inch box has a dimensional weight of 1.17 lb. For Small Bulky, Large Bulky and Extra-large units each of width and height counts as at least 2 inches. Small standard units are charged on their unit weight only.
Which fulfilment fee applies at exactly $10 or $50?
The $10 to $50 rates. Items priced below $10 get the lower under-$10 rates and items above $50 the over-$50 rates, so a price of $9.99 can leave more profit than $10.49.
Are FBA fees higher in the fourth quarter?
Yes. Holiday peak fulfilment fees apply from mid-October to mid-January, and standard-size storage goes from $0.78 to $2.40 a cubic foot a month from October to December. Choose the season in the calculator to see both.
What is the most I can pay a supplier?
For a target ROI the calculator divides what is left of the price after Amazon’s fees, advertising and other costs by 1 + ROI, then takes off shipping to Amazon and prep. In the starting example a 50% ROI allows $8.16 a unit.
Is FBA cheaper than shipping orders myself?
Enter your own postage, packaging, handling and storage under “Fulfil it yourself”. The comparison charges the referral fee on the price plus the shipping you charge the buyer and leaves out the FBA fees, so you see which leaves more per unit.
