About the Lined Paper Generator

Make the ruled paper you need, at true size. Plain lined paper with wide, college, narrow or metric spacing and an optional margin line; handwriting paper with three lines and a dotted middle line; four-line copybook paper, the style used in many Indian schools; Cornell notes sheets with a cue column and a summary area; Seyès (French school ruling); music staves with bar lines; and calligraphy guide sheets with ascender, waist, base and descender lines plus slant guides.

Pick A4, A5, US Letter or US Legal, portrait or landscape, set the line colour, weight and margins, add a title or a name and date line, and, with a pass, download a vector PDF (up to 20 pages), an SVG to edit or a 300 dpi PNG. Without a pass the sheet shows as a free preview at preview size with a MySmartCoPilot watermark. Everything is drawn in your browser.

How to use it

  1. Choose a layout — the hint under it says what it is for.
  2. Set the paper size and orientation, then the layout’s own options: line spacing, the writing band, the cue column and summary, the staff height, or the x-height, ascender, descender and slant.
  3. Add a title or, under Colour, lines and margins, a name and date line, and change the colour, line weight and margins.
  4. Check the sheet on the page: without a pass it is a free preview at preview size with a MySmartCoPilot watermark. With a pass, or after unlocking this result, download the PDF, SVG or PNG, and print the PDF at 100% (“Actual size”), not “Fit to page”.

Examples

A notebook page
Input
Ruled · A4 · college ruled · margin line 32 mm
Result
38 lines 7.1 mm apart with a red vertical line 32 mm from the left edge
Handwriting practice for a young child
Input
Handwriting · 8 mm writing band · 8 mm between groups · dotted middle line
Result
11 groups of three lines: the top and base lines solid and the middle line dotted
Four-line English copybook
Input
Four-line · 8 mm band
Result
8 groups of four lines, so tall letters, small letters and tails each have their own space
Cornell notes
Input
Cornell · cue column 64 mm · summary 51 mm · lines every 8 mm
Result
A cue column on the left, ruled notes on the right and a summary band along the bottom, labelled

Those are Cornell University’s own measurements: 2½ in, 6 in of notes and 2 in of summary.

A Spencerian practice sheet
Input
Calligraphy · x-height 5 mm · ascender and descender 1.5 × · 52° slant every 10 mm
Result
Bands in the 3:2:3 ratio with slant lines at 52° to the base line, the slant Spencerian script is written at

Common uses

  • Handwriting practice at home or in class, from first letters to joined-up writing.
  • Note-taking in the Cornell style for lectures and revision.
  • Lined paper for a worksheet, a letter, a test or a story, with a title and a name line.
  • Writing music by hand on blank staves, and practising italic or copperplate calligraphy.

Which lines to choose

  • Lined paper: wide ruled is 11/32 in (8.7 mm), college ruled 9/32 in (7.1 mm) and narrow ruled 1/4 in (6.4 mm), with the margin line about 1¼ in (32 mm) from the left edge on wide and college pads; in the UK, 8 mm is the usual ruling and 6 mm narrow, and learn-to-write books for primary schools use wider rulings such as 15 mm (Ruled paper).
  • Handwriting (three lines): the band between the dotted middle line and the base line is the x-height — the height of small letters such as a and o. The right size depends on the age group: start bigger for young children and reduce it as their writing gets smaller.
  • Four-line copybook: the extra line below the base line gives descenders (g, y, p) their own space, so letter heights stay even.
  • Seyès: the French school ruling, with a heavy line every 8 mm and three light lines 2 mm apart between them, plus heavy vertical lines every 8 mm from 16 mm in, so the heavy lines form 8 mm squares.
  • Calligraphy: ratios are written ascender : x-height : descender, so 3:2:3 means ascenders and descenders each 1.5 times the x-height. Set the slant guides to the hand you are learning: Spencerian script is written at 52° to the base line (Spencerian script), while italic is only slightly sloped (Italic script), so its guides stand close to upright, such as 80° or 85°. These are starting points: match them to the model alphabet you copy.

The Cornell layout

Cornell University’s Learning Strategies Center sets out the page as a 2½ in cue column on the left, a 6 in note-taking column on the right and a 2 in summary area along the bottom, and the method as five steps: record the lecture in the note column, write questions in the cue column soon afterwards, recite the answers with the notes covered, reflect on what the notes mean, and review for at least ten minutes a week (The Cornell Note-taking System, adapted from Walter Pauk’s How to Study in College). This page starts with those sizes in millimetres (64 mm and 51 mm) and lets you change them.

Printing at the right size

PDF pages are vector graphics at exactly the paper size, with every line placed in millimetres, so a 7.1 mm ruling really measures 7.1 mm on paper. Choose Actual size or 100% in the print dialog, not “Fit to page” or “Shrink oversized pages”. Keep a margin of at least 5 mm, since most home printers cannot print to the edge. Light blue or grey lines are easier to write over than black ones.

Limitations

  • One layout per file; a PDF can repeat it on up to 20 pages.
  • Lines are drawn in whole groups, so a little space may be left at the bottom of the page.
  • Music staves are plain five-line staves: no clefs, time signatures or braces for piano music.
  • Printed colours are RGB, so the exact shade depends on your printer.
  • The preview is drawn at screen resolution, so thin lines can look lighter or heavier than on paper.

Frequently asked questions

What do I get without a pass?

Without a pass, Lined Paper Generator shows the result at preview size (up to 640 pixels), with a MySmartCoPilot watermark across it. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment unless you choose automatic renewal, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.

What is the difference between wide and college ruled paper?

The line spacing: wide ruled has 11/32 in (8.7 mm) between lines, college ruled 9/32 in (7.1 mm), so a college ruled page fits more lines. Narrow ruled is 1/4 in (6.4 mm).

What is four-line paper for?

Learning letter heights. Tall letters go from the top line to the base line, small letters sit in the middle band, and letters with tails hang into the band below the base line, so writing stays even.

How big is a Cornell notes cue column?

Cornell University’s own sheet uses 2½ in (about 64 mm) for the cue column, 6 in for the notes and 2 in (about 51 mm) for the summary. You can change all three here.

Can I print blank sheet music?

Yes, with a pass. Choose Music staves, set the staff height (7 mm is a common size for writing by hand), the gap between staves and how many bar lines you want on each.

What slant should calligraphy guide lines have?

The slant of the hand you are learning, measured from the base line. Spencerian script is written at 52°. Italic is only slightly sloped, so choose a steep guide such as 80° or 85°. For an upright hand, choose the upright (90°) guides or none at all. Check the angle against the model alphabet you copy.

Why is there space left at the bottom of my page?

Lines and groups are drawn whole, so whatever is left over after the last full group stays blank. A smaller margin, a smaller gap between groups or a slightly smaller spacing fills more of the page.
