About the Spelling Practice

Paste this week’s spelling words — or pick one of the built-in lists — and the page reads each word aloud with a voice from your own device, then waits while you type it. You see straight away whether it is right, and if not, which letters were left out, swapped or added. At the end you get your score and can re-test just the words you missed, as many times as you like.

Add a short sentence after a word (“their | Their bags are packed.”) and it is read too — essential for words that sound alike. Without speech, or for visual learners, switch to Look, cover, write: the word is shown for a few seconds, hidden, and you write it from memory. Teachers can print a test sheet with numbered lines and an answer key. The built-in lists include the Dolch sight words, commonly misspelled words and homophones with sentences.

How to use it

  1. Choose Your own words and paste one word per line (add “| sentence” after a word if you like), or pick a built-in list.
  2. Choose how to practise: Listen and spell (the word is spoken) or Look, cover, write (the word is shown, then hidden).
  3. For listening, pick a language and a voice and press Test voice. Voices marked on this device keep your words on your device.
  4. Press Start. Type each word and press Enter to check it, then Enter again for the next word. Say it again repeats the word.
  5. At the end, use Re-test the misses until every word is right, or Print a test sheet for a paper test.

Common uses

  • Weekly school spelling lists, practised at home with a voice that never gets tired.
  • Sight words for early readers, and spelling bee practice.
  • Words you often get wrong in your own writing, or the vocabulary of a new language.
  • Teachers printing a test sheet to read aloud in class.

Voices and your privacy

The page uses the speech voices of your browser and operating system (Web Speech API). A voice on this device makes the sound on your device: the words never leave it, and it works offline. Some browsers also offer online voices — the browser marks them as not local (localService is false) — which send each word and sentence to the browser’s maker, such as Google or Microsoft, to make the sound. The page lists those separately, starts with an on-device voice when one exists, and warns you while an online voice is chosen. To add voices, use your system’s speech settings (on Windows: Settings › Time & language › Speech; on a Mac, iPhone or iPad: Accessibility › Spoken Content).

Look, cover, write

A well-known way to learn spellings: look at the word and say it, cover it, write it from memory, then check. Here the word is shown for the number of seconds you choose, then hidden while you type; the check shows any difference. It also works when your browser has no voices.

Checking and scoring

An answer is right when it matches the word exactly, ignoring extra spaces; curly and straight apostrophes count the same. By default capital letters do not matter (untick Ignore capital letters for proper nouns) and accents do (tick Ignore accents to accept cafe for café). A wrong answer is lined up with the right spelling letter by letter to show what was left out, typed instead or added. I don’t know counts as a miss and shows the word.

About the built-in lists

  • Dolch sight words: Edward W. Dolch’s lists of words that early readers meet most often (pre-primer to third grade, and nouns), as listed in Wikipedia’s article on the lists.
  • Commonly misspelled words: words that trip up many writers, chosen for this page so that British and American spelling agree.
  • Homophones: words that sound the same, each with a sentence written for this page.

Limitations

  • Voices and accents depend on your device and browser; some have only online voices, and a few have none (use Look, cover, write).
  • A voice can pronounce unusual words, names or other languages wrongly: listen with Test voice first.
  • Speech is played, not recorded: there is no audio file to download.
  • Up to 300 words in a list.

Privacy

Your word lists and answers stay in this browser and are never uploaded to MySmartCoPilot. On-device voices keep the words on your device. If you choose a voice marked online, your browser sends the words and sentences to that voice’s provider to make the speech.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there no voice, or only a robotic one?

The voices come from your device. Add better ones in your system’s speech settings and reload the page. If your browser has no voices at all, use Look, cover, write or print a test sheet.

Can I practise words in another language?

Yes. Paste the words and choose the language of a voice that speaks it, for example French or Hindi. Tick Ignore accents to accept letters typed without their accents (cafe for café); it never ignores the vowel signs of scripts such as Devanagari, which are part of the spelling.

Does it work for words that sound the same, like there and their?

Yes, if you add a sentence after each one: “their | Their bags are packed.” The sentence is read after the word. The built-in homophones list already has sentences.

Can a teacher give a test on paper?

Yes: Print a test sheet prints numbered answer lines, and an answer key on a second page, for the words in the list. Read the words aloud, or let the page read them.

Are my words saved?

Your own list and your settings are saved in this browser, so they are there next time. Nothing is uploaded.
