Percentage to CGPA Calculator (India)
Percentage to CGPA by the official rule of your board or university, run in reverse.
Your percentage
CBSE Class X: work it out from your five subject marks
Under the CCE scheme each subject’s marks give a grade (A1 91–100, A2 81–90 … D 33–40) and a grade point; the CGPA is the average of the five main subjects’ grade points.

About the Percentage to CGPA Calculator (India)
Each board and university that awards a CGPA also says how to turn it into a percentage — and this calculator runs that rule backwards. Choose the rule of the body that awarded your grades, type the percentage, and you get the CGPA it corresponds to, the inverse formula with your numbers in it, and a table of the same percentage under the other rules. The result stays on the scale: a percentage above what a rule can give shows the maximum CGPA, with a note.
Built-in rules, from the same documents as the CGPA to percentage calculator: CBSE Class X under the CCE scheme (CGPA = % ÷ 9.5), VTU’s 2021, 2022 and 2025 schemes (% ÷ 10), the VTU 2018 scheme (% ÷ 10 + 0.75), Anna University R2021 and R2025 and AKTU (% ÷ 10), JNTUH R22 and R25 (% ÷ 10 + 0.5), the IIMs’ CAT rule (% × maximum CGPA ÷ 100) and a custom formula. For CBSE Class X you can also enter your five subject marks to get the CGPA exactly as the grading worked it out.
How to use it
- Choose the conversion rule of the board or university that awarded your grades.
- Type your percentage. For the CAT rule or a custom formula, also enter the maximum CGPA (and a and b of P = a × CGPA + b).
- Read the CGPA, the inverse formula and the working. Under VTU rules the class for that percentage is shown too.
- For CBSE Class X, open Work it out from your five subject marks to get the CGPA from each subject’s grade point.
- Compare the rules in the table, then Copy result — it includes the source document.
Examples
85%
CGPA 8.95: 85 ÷ 9.5 = 8.947
CBSE CGPAs move in steps of 0.2, so 85% lies between 8.8 (83.6%) and 9.0 (85.5%).
82%
CGPA 8.20: 82 ÷ 10 — First Class with Distinction
74.5%
CGPA 8.20: 74.5 ÷ 10 + 0.75
The regulation’s own example, (8.20 − 0.75) × 10 = 74.5%, reversed.
77%
CGPA 8.20: 77 ÷ 10 + 0.5
Marks 95, 88, 76, 67, 58
Grades A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 → grade points 10, 9, 8, 7, 6 → CGPA 8.0
The marks average 76.8%, yet the CGPA is 8.0 (indicative 76%), not 76.8 ÷ 9.5 = 8.08.
The inverse formulas
Every built-in rule has the form P = a × CGPA + b, so CGPA = (P − b) ÷ a:
- CBSE Class X, CCE scheme: P = 9.5 × CGPA, so CGPA = P ÷ 9.5
- VTU 2021, 2022 and 2025 schemes, Anna University R2021 and R2025, AKTU: P = CGPA × 10, so CGPA = P ÷ 10
- VTU 2018 scheme: P = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, so CGPA = P ÷ 10 + 0.75
- JNTUH R22 and R25: P = (CGPA − 0.5) × 10, so CGPA = P ÷ 10 + 0.5
- No university formula (IIM CAT rule): P = CGPA ÷ maximum CGPA × 100, so CGPA = P × maximum ÷ 100
The CGPA is shown to two decimals (rounded half up); the working keeps four. A rule cannot give a CGPA above the top of the scale: CBSE’s 9.5 × CGPA reaches only 95% at 10, VTU 2018 reaches 92.5% and JNTUH 95%, so a higher percentage shows the maximum.
Why a percentage does not give back your exact CGPA
A CGPA is an average of grade points, and each grade point covers a band of marks. The board’s formula turns a CGPA into an indicative percentage; turning a percentage back into a CGPA with the same formula is therefore indicative too. Under CBSE’s CCE scheme, for example, a 95 and a 91 are both A1 (10 points): marks of 95, 88, 76, 67 and 58 average 76.8%, but their grade points 10, 9, 8, 7 and 6 average 8.0 — the CGPA on the grade sheet — not 76.8 ÷ 9.5 = 8.08. When you know your subject marks, use the marks helper; when you have the grade sheet, the CGPA printed there is the official one.

Limitations
- The CGPA on your grade sheet is the official one. A percentage turned back into a CGPA is only what the rule implies.
- Only rules whose regulation could be read are built in. For any other university, take P = a × CGPA + b from its regulations and use the custom formula.
- The CBSE marks helper follows the CCE grading of Class X (A1 91–100 … D 33–40); a grade of E1 or E2 has no grade point, so no CGPA can be worked out with it.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a percentage to CGPA?
Solve your board’s or university’s rule for the CGPA: divide by 9.5 for CBSE Class X under the CCE scheme (85% → 8.95), divide by 10 for VTU’s 2021, 2022 and 2025 schemes (82% → 8.2), and divide by 10 and add 0.75 for VTU 2018 (74.5% → 8.2).
What CGPA is 75%?
It depends on the rule: 7.89 under CBSE’s 9.5 rule (CBSE CGPAs step by 0.2, so 7.8 gives 74.1% and 8.0 gives 76%), 7.5 under VTU 2021, 2022 and 2025, 8.25 under VTU 2018 and 8.0 under JNTUH R22 and R25.
Is dividing by 9.5 right for every board and university?
No. 9.5 is CBSE’s factor for Class X results under the CCE scheme. Universities set their own rules — most of the built-in ones multiply or divide by 10, some with an offset.
Why is my CGPA from subject marks different from percentage ÷ 9.5?
Because CBSE works the CGPA out from grade points, not from marks: every mark from 91 to 100 is an A1 worth 10. Five subjects with 95, 88, 76, 67 and 58 give a CGPA of 8.0, while their average of 76.8% divided by 9.5 gives 8.08.
My percentage is above 95% — why does CBSE show a CGPA of 10?
Because 9.5 × 10 = 95% is the highest indicative percentage the rule gives: any percentage above it corresponds to the top CGPA of 10.
How do I convert my percentage to a 4.0 GPA?
Use the GPA scale converter: it converts a percentage or CGPA to a 4.0-scale GPA by the College Board chart or a proportional rule, with the method labelled.
