About the Vocabulary Worksheet Generator

Type or paste a word list — this week’s spelling words, a science topic, a foreign-language unit — and get four kinds of printable worksheets from it, each with an answer key: matching (words and meanings in two columns), fill in the blanks (your example sentences with the word blanked out, and a box of words to use), a word scramble and missing letters. Give each word its meaning and, if you like, an example sentence on the same line.

Choose which worksheets to make, a title and a line for the class, the letters to leave out, shuffled or typed order, A4 or US Letter, larger type for young learners, and up to four versions so pupils sitting together get different sheets. With a pass the worksheets download as a PDF or an editable Word file, or print straight from the page; the free preview shows their first pages, marked. Everything is made in your browser: your words are not uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Type or paste your words, one per line: the word, then its meaning, then an example sentence, with a tab, a bar (|) or a spaced dash ( – ) between them — or press Try the example list. A text or CSV file opens too.
  2. Tick the worksheets to make — Matching, Fill in the blanks, Word scramble, Missing letters — and give them a title and a line for the class.
  3. Read the notes beside the worksheets: they say which words a worksheet left out and why (no meaning for matching, a sentence without the word for fill in the blanks).
  4. Under More options, choose the letters to leave out, the answer key’s place, versions, words per worksheet, paper and text size. Shuffle again mixes everything anew.
  5. Download the PDF or the Word file, copy the text or print — with a pass, or after unlocking these worksheets; without one, the free preview shows the first pages, marked.

Common uses

  • Weekly spelling and vocabulary lists in primary school.
  • Topic words in science, geography or history, with meanings and sentences.
  • Language classes: Spanish, French, German, Hindi or Russian vocabulary.
  • English as a second language, with simple meanings as clues.
  • Homework, cover lessons and revision packs, with different versions for neighbours.

The four worksheets

  • Matching: the words numbered on the left, their meanings shuffled on the right with letters, so that no meaning sits beside its own word. Pupils write the letter on the line. Up to 26 words a part (A to Z); a longer list is shared out evenly over two or more parts.
  • Fill in the blanks: each example sentence with the word blanked out — also a longer form of it, such as running for run, which the answer key then gives as “running (run)” — then, for words without a usable sentence, their meaning to find the word for. A box of the words to use is optional.
  • Word scramble: the letters of each word in a new order, never the word itself; in a phrase each word is scrambled in its place, and hyphens and apostrophes stay put. The meaning can be shown as a clue.
  • Missing letters: the vowels, about a third, about half, or every other letter left out, always at least one and never all of them, with the meaning as an optional clue.

Writing the list

One word or phrase per line. Between the word, its meaning and its sentence put a tab (what a spreadsheet gives when you copy two or three columns), a bar (|) or a dash with spaces ( – ); after the word a colon, an equals sign or a comma works too (orbit: the path of a planet), and the first of them ends the word. With spaced dashes, the last part counts as the sentence only when it contains the word, so a dash inside a meaning stays in it. A number or bullet in front of a line (1., 2), •) is left out, a header row such as Word, Definition, Sentence is skipped, a word given twice is used once, and up to 100 words are used. In a CSV file, quoted columns are read as columns, so a meaning may contain commas.

If your list has words and example sentences but no meanings, choose An example sentence under When a line has two parts.

Languages and letters

Letters are counted as a reader sees them, so é, ñ, ü and Hindi conjuncts stay one letter in the scramble and the missing-letter puzzles. The PDF’s fonts cover the Latin alphabet with its accents, Vietnamese, Greek, Cyrillic and Devanagari (Hindi, Marathi, Nepali, Sanskrit). Letters of other scripts print as “?” in the PDF and the page says so; the Word file and printing from the page keep them. Leave out the vowels works on the Latin alphabet; in other scripts it leaves out about a third of the letters.

Limitations

  • The worksheets use your words exactly as typed: a spelling mistake in the list goes onto the sheets and into the key.
  • Fill in the blanks finds the word or a longer form that starts with it (run, runs, running), not an irregular form such as ran; such a word gets its meaning line instead.
  • In the PDF, scripts other than Latin, Vietnamese, Greek, Cyrillic and Devanagari print as “?” (for example Arabic, Chinese or Tamil); use the Word file or Print for those.
  • Matching labels meanings A to Z, so a list of more than 26 words with meanings is split into parts.

Frequently asked questions

What do I get without a pass?

Without a pass, Vocabulary Worksheet Generator shows the first pages of your worksheets (up to 3) as marked page images, with the number of pages and the notes on your list. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded, copied or printed. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.

Can I paste my list from a spreadsheet or a flashcard app?

Yes. Copy the columns (word, meaning, sentence) from a spreadsheet and paste: the tabs between them are read. A flashcard app’s text export with a tab or a comma between the word and its meaning works too, one card per line, and so does a .txt or .csv file.

Which sentences go into the fill-in-the-blank sheet?

Your example sentences, with the word blanked out wherever it appears — or a longer form of it, such as running for run, which the answer key gives as “running (run)”. A word without a sentence that contains it gets its meaning line instead (“__________ the path of a planet around the sun”), and the notes list any word that has neither.

Can a scrambled word come out as the word itself?

No. The letters are shuffled again until they differ from the word. Words whose letters cannot be put in another order (one letter, or the same letter repeated) are left out of the scramble, and the notes say so.

How do the versions work?

Choose 2 to 4 versions under More options. Each version has the words in another order, other scrambles, other gaps and other matching letters, and its own answer key, so pupils sitting side by side cannot copy each other.

Can I edit the worksheets?

Download the Word file (.docx) and change anything in Word, LibreOffice or Google Docs. The PDF is ready to print as it is.

Which languages can I use?

Any language for the Word file and for printing from the page. The PDF draws the Latin alphabet with accents, Vietnamese, Greek, Cyrillic and Devanagari; other scripts show as “?” in the PDF, and the page tells you when that happens.
