About the Hindi Typing Test
Take a timed Hindi typing test in Unicode Devanagari — the text every Mangal or Nirmala UI test checks — with the Remington (GAIL) or InScript keyboard working right on this page, so you can practise on any computer without installing a Hindi keyboard. Or switch your own system to its Hindi keyboard and type with that.
Choose the SSC mode (10 minutes, with the 30 words a minute ≈ 9,000 key depressions an hour that SSC’s notice asks for Hindi typing in LDC/JSA posts), the CPCT mode (15 minutes, net and gross words a minute, accuracy and CPCT’s score band) or free practice. The passage shows each word green or red as you go, the key map lights up the next key, and the hint line spells out the keys for the word you are typing — useful while learning Remington’s half letters and the order of ि and the reph.
How to use it
- Choose the test: SSC, CPCT or Practice (with a time and a target speed of your own).
- Choose the keyboard: Remington (GAIL) or InScript on this page — keep your computer on its English keyboard — or My own Hindi keyboard if your system is already set to Hindi.
- For Remington, choose the order: typewriter (ि before its letter, the reph after its syllable, as on a Remington typewriter) or phonetic.
- Pick a passage, click the typing box and start: the timer starts with your first key. Type each word as shown with one space between words.
- When the time is up (or you press Finish now), read the SSC and CPCT figures and the words you got wrong.
Examples
कीर्ति
D H F R Shift+Z — क (D) + ी (H), then ि (F) before त (R), then the reph (Shift+Z) after the syllable
विश्वास
F O ' O K L — ि + व, श् ('), व (O), ा (K), स (L)Letters such as ख, ण, श and ष have only a half form on their key: add ा (K) to make the full letter.
10 minutes, correct words with 1,450 characters including one space each
1,450 ÷ 5 ÷ 10 = 29 words a minute = 1,450 × 6 = 8,700 key depressions an hour
SSC’s notice equates 30 words a minute with about 9,000 key depressions an hour (5 a word).
15 minutes, 420 words typed, 390 of them right
GWPM 28, NWPM 26, accuracy 26 × 100 ÷ 28 = 92.9% — in CPCT’s Hindi matrix 26–30 NWPM is 60%
Common uses
- Preparing for the Hindi typing test of SSC (LDC/JSA), CPCT, courts and other government jobs.
- Learning Remington (GAIL) or InScript without changing your computer’s keyboard.
- Checking your Hindi speed in Unicode (Mangal) instead of Kruti Dev.
- Practising the hard parts of Remington: half letters, ि typed first and the reph typed last.
Remington (GAIL) on this page
The keys follow the Remington (GAIL) chart that CPCT publishes (cpct.mp.gov.in). The open Remington GAIL keyboard by SIL has the same letters and signs on the same keys; it differs only on the number row (European digits instead of Devanagari ones, which this test counts as the same) and on Shift+4 (* instead of ?). The few keys the chart leaves empty ( ( and ) on the \ key, ; on the − key) follow SIL. As on the typewriter:
- A half letter plus ा (K or Shift+A) is the full letter: ख् + ा = ख. Letters with no half key get the halant from Shift+= (्).
- अ + ा = आ, then + े = ओ, + ै = औ, + ॅ = ऑ; ा + े = ो, ा + ै = ौ, ा + ॅ = ॉ; ए + े = ऐ; उ + ु = ऊ; इ + reph (Shift+Z) = ई; ॅ + ं = ँ; two dandas make ॥.
- Z adds the rakar (्र) after a letter; Shift+Z is the reph (र्).
- Typewriter order: ि is typed before its consonant (F then D = कि) and the reph after its syllable (D K ; Shift+Z = कार्य). Phonetic order: both are typed where Unicode stores them (D F = कि, Shift+Z ; = र्य). Remington (GAIL) keyboards differ here, so practise the order of the keyboard you will be tested on.
- Shift+3 is the visarga (ः) after a letter and a colon elsewhere; the number row types Devanagari digits, which are checked as the same as 0–9.
InScript on this page
InScript — the layout Windows calls Hindi Traditional, standardised by the Bureau of Indian Standards — types every character in Unicode order: consonant, then its vowel sign; a half letter is the consonant followed by the halant (D). Vowels are on the left of the keyboard and consonants on the right. The key map follows CPCT’s InScript chart, with the digits as on the key caps. Semicolons in the passages are shown as commas, because InScript has no semicolon key.
How the SSC and CPCT figures are worked out
Words are compared one by one in order, split at spaces — an extra or missing space shifts every later word, as CPCT warns.
- SSC: the Commission’s notice for the Combined Higher Secondary Level examination (ssc.gov.in) asks LDC/JSA candidates typing in Hindi for 30 words a minute, “about 9000 key depressions per hour”, in 10 minutes (15 minutes for candidates who get compensatory time), typed in the Mangal font. Here a key depression is a character of a correctly typed word, with one for its space, so words a minute = key depressions ÷ 5 ÷ minutes and an hour is 60 times a minute. The Commission evaluates the test under its own guidelines; the figures here are for practice.
- CPCT: CPCT’s assessment (cpct.mp.gov.in) gives gross words a minute = typed words ÷ minutes, net words a minute (NWPM) = correct words ÷ minutes and accuracy = NWPM × 100 ÷ GWPM; the score card shows NWPM. Its Hindi score matrix is 20–25 NWPM = 50%, 26–30 = 60%, 31–35 = 70%, 36–40 = 80%, 41–50 = 90% and 51 or more = 100%. The Hindi typing section is 15 minutes (20 for differently abled candidates).
Passages
The passages are the openings of three stories by Premchand, whose works are in the public domain in India — पंच परमेश्वर, शतरंज के खिलाड़ी and सवा सेर गेहूँ — from Hindi Wikisource transcriptions, as used by our English and Hindi Typing Speed Test. Longer tests continue with the next story. You can also paste a passage of your own, for example one from a past exam paper.
Limitations
- This is practice, not the official exam software: SSC, CPCT and courts evaluate tests under their own rules and keyboards, which can differ in details.
- The keyboards on this page need a physical keyboard. On a phone or tablet the test starts with My own Hindi keyboard: switch your phone’s keyboard to Hindi and type.
- With the on-page keyboards, keep your computer on its English keyboard; a Hindi input method of the system would type over them.
- Rare letters that are not on the Remington chart’s normal and Shift keys (such as ङ and ञ on their own) cannot be typed with the Remington emulation.
- Results are kept in this browser only.

Frequently asked questions
Which is better for exams, Remington (GAIL) or InScript?
CPCT lets you choose either (your admit card shows the one you chose). Typists who learned on a typewriter or with Kruti Dev usually choose Remington; InScript is easier to learn from scratch because it follows the order of the letters. Check the layouts your own exam allows, and practise only the one you will use.
What speed does SSC ask for in Hindi typing?
For LDC/JSA posts, SSC’s Combined Higher Secondary Level notice asks for 30 words a minute in Hindi (35 in English), which it puts at about 9,000 key depressions an hour, typed in 10 minutes. Always check the notice of your own exam.
What is KDPH?
Key depressions per hour: the number of keys pressed in an hour. With 5 key depressions to a word, 30 words a minute is 30 × 5 × 60 = 9,000 KDPH. Here it is worked out from the characters of the words you typed correctly.
How do I type ि with Remington?
In the typewriter order, press F before the consonant: F D gives कि, and F Shift+L Shift+F K gives स्थि. In the phonetic order, type the consonant first and then F.
Can I use my own text?
Yes: choose Your own text and paste any Hindi passage in Unicode. Text in Kruti Dev must be converted first with our Kruti Dev to Unicode converter.
