Answer-key sheet

For example ABCDA BCDAB or 1 A, 2 C; (AC) fills both, * = any answer, - = not marked. The key sheet is the same sheet with the right bubbles filled in.

Preview

Print at actual size (100 %), not “fit to page”, so the bubbles keep their size. To mark the sheets with a phone camera, print them from the OMR Sheet Scanner instead: it reads its own layout only.

About the OMR Sheet Generator

Make your own OMR (bubble) answer sheets for multiple-choice tests — with a pass, print as many as you need. Choose the number of questions (up to 200 on one sheet), the options (A–B up to A–E, or 1–5), and what the sheet asks for: a roll-number grid with a box above each digit (call it Student ID, Candidate number or whatever your school uses), a test-code grid, the booklet series, write-in fields for the name, class, subject and date (and one of your own), signature boxes, short instructions with examples of right and wrong marks, and corner registration marks.

The bubbles are sized for the space left — as large as the sheet allows, never smaller than 3 mm across — and the preview shows exactly what prints. Without a pass it is a free preview marked “MySmartCoPilot preview · not for use”. With a pass, download the sheets as a vector PDF in A4 or US Letter, with up to 200 copies in one file, and type the answer key to get the matching answer-key sheet: the same sheet with the right bubbles filled in, to mark by hand or to print on a transparency and lay over each answer sheet.

How to use it

  1. Type the school and the examination (both optional), the number of questions and, for a second sheet, the first question number.
  2. Choose the options per question and whether they are letters or numbers. Leave Columns on Best fit, or choose a number.
  3. Set the identification grids (the number grid’s title and digits, test-code digits, booklet series; 0 digits leaves a grid out) and the fields and signatures to print.
  4. Choose the paper and the number of copies and check the preview. With a pass, or after unlocking this result, press Download sheets (PDF) and print at actual size (100 %).
  5. For the key, type the answers under Answer-key sheet and, with a pass, press Answer-key sheet (PDF), or switch the preview to Answer key to check it first.

Common uses

  • Class tests and mock exams with answer sheets that look like the real exam’s.
  • Coaching centres that print a batch of sheets for every test, with roll numbers and test codes.
  • A second sheet for questions 101 to 200, numbered on from the first.
  • A transparent answer key for fast marking by hand.

What is on the sheet

  • Header: the school and the examination, centred, and “ANSWER SHEET” (or a black “ANSWER KEY” label on the key sheet).
  • Write-in fields: name, class or section, subject, date and one field you name yourself, each with a line to write on.
  • Identification grids: a box for each digit and, under it, the bubbles 0–9, so the roll number is both written and marked (its title is yours: Roll number, Student ID, Candidate number …); the same for a test code, and a column for the booklet series (A–B to A–D).
  • Instructions: how to mark, with a correctly filled bubble and four common wrong marks (a tick, a cross, a half-filled bubble and a dot).
  • Answers: question numbers in bold, the option letter inside each bubble, a thin line after every five questions, columns spread evenly across the sheet.
  • Registration marks: solid squares in the four corners, which OMR scanning software can use to line up a scanned sheet.
  • Signatures of the candidate and the invigilator at the bottom.

Paper sizes and printing

Sheets are laid out in millimetres for ISO 216 A4 (210 × 297 mm) or US Letter (8.5 × 11 inches). Print at actual size (100 %, not “fit to page”) on plain paper, so every sheet has the same bubble positions — which matters when you mark with a transparent key or with scanning software. Bubbles are as large as the space allows (up to 4.8 mm) and never smaller than 3 mm across; the preview shows the size and the columns the settings give.

Marking the sheets

  • By hand with an overlay: print the answer-key sheet on a transparency (or punch out the filled bubbles of a paper copy) and lay it on each answer sheet; unfilled holes and extra marks show at once.
  • With a spreadsheet: type each student’s answers into the MCQ Test Grader for scores, ranks and an item analysis.
  • With a phone camera: the OMR Sheet Scanner reads only the sheets it prints itself, so use its own sheet for tests you want to scan.

Limitations

  • Up to 200 questions and 5 options per sheet; a roll number of up to 12 digits and a test code of up to 6.
  • Many fields, long grids and 200 questions with five options leave less room: when the bubbles would be smaller than 3 mm the page asks you to remove something or split the test over two sheets.
  • This tool makes sheets; it does not read filled-in sheets. The OMR Sheet Scanner reads only its own layout.
  • The PDF prints Latin, Greek, Cyrillic, Vietnamese and Devanagari text in the school and examination names; other scripts print as “?”.

Frequently asked questions

What do I get without a pass?

Without a pass, OMR Sheet Generator shows the answer sheet and its answer key as page images marked “MySmartCoPilot preview · not for use”. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment unless you choose automatic renewal, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.

How do I print OMR sheets so the bubbles are the right size?

Open the PDF and print it at actual size or 100 % scale on the paper size you chose. “Fit to page” shrinks the sheet slightly and moves the bubbles, which matters if you mark with a transparent key or scanning software.

Can I make an OMR sheet with 100 or 200 questions?

Yes. One sheet holds up to 200 questions: with the school and examination names, every field and five options per question, 200 questions fit in 5 columns of 40 with bubbles 3.2 mm across on A4. For more questions, make a second sheet that starts at question 201.

Can the OMR Sheet Scanner read these sheets?

No. The scanner looks for its own squares and bubble positions, so it reads only the sheets printed from its own page. Use this generator for sheets you mark by hand, with an overlay key or with OMR software that lets you set up your own layout.

What is the answer-key sheet for?

It is the same sheet with the right bubbles filled in. Keep it as the official key, or print it on a transparency and lay it over each student’s sheet to see right and wrong answers at a glance.

Can the options be numbers instead of letters?

Yes. Choose 1 2 3 4 5 under Option labels; the answer key is then typed with digits, for example 1 3 2 4.
