About the Printable Grid & Graph Paper Generator

Create the paper you need and print it: graph paper with minor and major lines in millimetres or inches, dot grids for bullet journals, isometric and hexagon grids for drawing and games, polar graph paper, lined paper (wide, college, narrow or Seyès), music staff paper, calligraphy guide sheets with slant lines, and storyboard or wireframe sheets with phone, tablet and browser frames.

Pages are vector PDFs built in your browser at true size, for A4, Letter, A3, A5, B5, Legal, Tabloid and Half Letter. Line colour, weight, spacing and margins are adjustable, and a scale bar at the bottom of the page lets you check that the printout came out at 100%.

How to use it

  1. Choose the pattern — graph, dot grid, isometric, hexagon, polar, lined, music staff, calligraphy, storyboard or wireframe.
  2. Pick the paper size and orientation, and the margin.
  3. Set the pattern’s options: spacing (in mm, inches or squares per inch), major lines, dot size, ruling, staff height, x-height and slant, panels or frames.
  4. Adjust line colours and weights if you like; the preview shows the page as it will print.
  5. Press Download PDF, then print with the scale set to 100% or Actual size (not “Fit to page”) and check the scale bar with a ruler.

Examples

Metric graph paper
Input
Graph · A4 portrait · 5 mm squares · heavier line every 2 squares · 10 mm margin
Result
square-paper-a4-5mm.pdf — 38 × 52 squares of 5 mm (whole 1 cm squares), centred, with the scale bar below
Quarter-inch graph paper for US Letter
Input
Graph · Letter · 4 squares per inch · major every 4
Result
Squares of 6.35 mm with a heavy line every inch
College ruled notebook page
Input
Lined · Letter · College ruled 9/32 in · margin line 32 mm from the left
Result
Lines 7.14 mm apart below a 20 mm header, red margin line
Pointed-pen practice sheet
Input
Calligraphy · x-height 5 mm · ascender and descender 1.5 × x-height (3:2:3) · 55° slant lines
Result
Groups of ascender, waist, base and descender lines with slant guides

Common uses

  • Maths homework, graphs and geometry on squared or polar paper.
  • Bullet journals and sketching on dot grids; isometric drawings and game maps on triangle and hexagon grids.
  • Handwriting and calligraphy practice, and sheet music by hand.
  • Storyboards for videos, and app or website sketches on device-frame sheets.

Printing at the right size

PDF pages are made at exactly the paper size, with every line placed in millimetres. Printers and PDF viewers often shrink pages to fit their margins, which makes a 5 mm grid slightly smaller. In the print dialog choose Actual size, 100% or No scaling, then measure the scale bar (10 cm, or 4 inches) at the bottom of the page. Keep margins of at least 5 mm: most home printers cannot print right to the edge.

Rulings and ratios

  • Lined paper: wide ruled is 11/32 in (8.7 mm), college ruled 9/32 in (7.1 mm) and narrow ruled 1/4 in (6.4 mm), with the margin line about 1¼ in (32 mm) from the left edge on wide and college pads (Ruled paper). 8 mm and 6 mm are common metric rulings.
  • Seyès (French school ruling): a heavy line every 8 mm with three light lines 2 mm apart between them, and heavy vertical lines every 8 mm.
  • Calligraphy: ratios are written ascender : x-height : descender. A ratio of 3:2:3 means ascenders and descenders each 1.5 times the x-height; the presets are starting points — adjust them to your nib and hand.
  • Graph paper with major lines keeps whole major squares (for example whole centimetres on 5 mm or 1 mm paper), centred on the page.

Paper sizes

A3, A4, A5 and B5 follow ISO 216 (A4 is 210 × 297 mm). Letter (8.5 × 11 in), Legal (8.5 × 14 in), Tabloid (11 × 17 in) and Half Letter (5.5 × 8.5 in) are the North American sizes, defined in inches; ANSI/ASME Y14.1 names Letter and Tabloid ANSI A and ANSI B. To convert between them, see the Paper Size Converter.

Limitations

  • Very fine patterns make large files: a 2 mm dot grid on A3 has about 28,000 dots per page. The tool allows up to 50 identical pages per PDF.
  • The preview is drawn at screen resolution; thin lines can look heavier or lighter on screen than on paper.
  • Colours are RGB; light blue and grey lines print well on home printers, but exact colours depend on the printer.

Frequently asked questions

Why are my squares slightly smaller than 5 mm?

The printer scaled the page to fit. Print again with Actual size or 100% selected instead of “Fit” or “Shrink oversized pages”, and check the scale bar with a ruler.

How do I make 1/4-inch (quarter-inch) graph paper?

Choose Graph, set the spacing unit to squares per inch and enter 4, then set Major line every to 4 for a heavy line each inch. For 1/5-inch engineering paper enter 5 and 5.

Can I print several different patterns in one PDF?

Each PDF has one pattern, repeated on as many pages as you choose (up to 50). Download a second PDF for another pattern.

What is isometric paper?

A grid of equilateral triangles: vertical lines and lines at 30° to the horizontal. It is used to draw 3D objects without perspective, for technical sketches, pixel art and game maps. Tick Dots only for isometric dot paper.

Is anything uploaded?

No. The PDF is built in your browser and downloaded straight to your device.
