About the Etsy Listing Checker: Title, 13 Tags & SEO Audit
Paste one Etsy listing — its title, up to 13 tags, the description and the materials — and the rules Etsy states for them are checked as you type: the 140-character title limit, the characters a title, a tag or a material may hold, the 20-character tag limit, the characters you may use only once, repeated words, words about price and shipping, the part of the title search engines show and the first sentence of the description. Each issue says what is wrong and how to fix it, and a cleaned version applies the safe fixes for you.
To audit a whole shop, open the Currently for Sale Listings CSV that Etsy’s Download Data page gives you (your own file needs no pass): every listing gets its score and its issues, with the listings that use fewer than 13 tags, titles used twice and a table of how often each tag is used across the shop.
The free preview shows the score and the first three issues of one listing with their fixes, and the counts for a shop file. A Premium pass unlocks every issue, the cleaned version to copy, the shop-wide table and the audit as CSV. MySmartCoPilot is not affiliated with Etsy; the rules come from Etsy’s own Help Center, Seller Handbook and API reference, linked below.
How to use it
- Under One listing, paste the title, the tags (separated by commas or one per line), the description and the materials of a listing — or press Try the example.
- Read the score and the issues: errors break an Etsy rule, warnings go against Etsy’s guidance, tips are worth a look. Each one says which part of the listing it is about and how to fix it.
- Check the cleaned version (title, tags and materials with the safe fixes applied). With a Premium pass, copy it into Etsy, or copy the whole report; the free preview shows the score and the first three issues.
- To audit the whole shop, switch to Whole shop and drop your listings CSV from Etsy (Shop Manager → Settings → Options → Download Data → Currently for Sale Listings); opening your own file needs no pass.
- Work through the listings with the lowest scores first. With a Premium pass, download the audit as CSV, with every issue and the cleaned title and tags of each listing, and the tag table.
Examples
Handmade Silver Earrings | Silver Earrings | Perfect Gift for Her | FAST SHIPPING | Minimalist Jewelry ✨ Tags: silver earrings, earring, earrings, … , dainty earrings for women, -bridesmaid gift, silver earrings
Score 5/100 (Poor). Errors: an emoji in the title, a 25-character tag, a tag that starts with “-” and “100%” in the materials. Warnings: “silver” and “earrings” repeated, “perfect” in the title, “fast shipping”, 3 empty tag slots, a repeated tag, earring and earrings, “perfect gift” four times in the description. Cleaned title: Handmade Silver Earrings, Silver Earrings, Gift for Her, Minimalist Jewelry
The cleaned title still repeats “Silver Earrings”: removing a repeated phrase changes what the title says, so that is left to you.
Salt & Pepper & Herb Shakers
Error: a title may use %, :, & and + only once each. Cleaned: Salt & Pepper and Herb Shakers
The Currently for Sale Listings CSV of a small homeware shop
4 listings with fewer than 13 tags, one title used by two listings, four tags used by two listings each (“ceramic mug”, “linen apron”, “speckled mug” and “stoneware mug”) and a warning on “Hogwarts” and “iPhone”, names owned by other companies.
Common uses
- A new Etsy seller checking a listing before publishing it.
- A seller cleaning up older listings written when titles were packed with keywords.
- A shop owner or assistant auditing every listing at once from the Download Data CSV.
- A virtual assistant or agency reviewing a client’s shop before working on its search visibility.
The rules it checks
- Title: up to 140 characters; letters, numbers, punctuation, maths symbols, spaces and ™ © ® only (no emoji or currency signs); %, :, & and + once each. These are errors.
- Title guidance: fewer than 15 words, each word once, no subjective words such as “perfect” or “beautiful” (they belong in the description), nothing about price, shipping or sales (Etsy badges those in search), holidays and recipients only when essential, gifting phrases in tags rather than the title. These are warnings and tips.
- Tags: up to 13, each up to 20 characters, made of letters, numbers and spaces, with ' and - allowed inside a tag but not at its start (the straight apostrophe: the curly ’ many phones type is not in Etsy’s list, and the cleaned version straightens it); repeated tags, singular and plural pairs, and tags that only repeat the title or are single words.
- Description: its first sentence should say exactly what you sell; phrases repeated over and over are flagged.
- Materials: letters, numbers and spaces only, one material per entry.
- Names owned by others: a built-in list of well-known brand, franchise, league and character names, plus your own list.
What search engines see
Etsy builds your listing page’s title from the item title, and search engines show only about its first 50 to 60 characters. The checker shows that part of your title, so you can see whether what the item is and its key traits come first. The description’s first sentence is what a reader meets first: Etsy’s advice is that a person should know from it exactly what you are selling.
What the score means
The score starts at 100 and loses 12 points for each error, 5 for each warning and 2 for each tip: 85 or more is Good, 60 to 84 Needs work, below 60 Poor. It is MySmartCoPilot’s own summary of these checks, so you can see which listings need attention first. Etsy does not publish a listing score, and a high score here does not promise a place in Etsy’s search.
Names owned by other companies
Using a brand, franchise or character name to describe or sell your own item can infringe the owner’s rights unless you are licensed. Etsy removes material reported for infringement and can end the selling privileges of repeat infringers (Etsy Intellectual Property Policy). The checker warns about well-known names it knows and about any you add; add your own brand names so they are never flagged. The list cannot be complete, and a name it does not flag is not cleared for use.

Limitations
- It checks the rules Etsy states for titles, tags, descriptions and materials; it does not know how Etsy ranks a listing, and it does not estimate search volumes, which Etsy does not publish.
- Attributes, photos, videos, prices, shipping profiles and reviews also count in Etsy’s search; they are not in the listings CSV and are not checked.
- Etsy does not publish the layout of its listings CSV, so the columns are found by their names (TITLE, TAGS, DESCRIPTION, MATERIALS, SKU). A sheet of your own works too when its first row names those columns.
- The cleaned version applies only safe fixes (characters, repeated tags, words about sales, capitals, the 140-character cut); repeated words and phrases that change the meaning are left to you. Read it before you use it.
- The warnings about names owned by others are a starting point, not legal advice.

Frequently asked questions
What do I get without a pass?
Without a pass, Etsy Listing Checker: Title, 13 Tags & SEO Audit shows the score and the first three issues of one listing with their fixes, and the counts of listings and issues in a shop file. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded or copied. A Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.
How many characters can an Etsy title have?
Up to 140 characters. Etsy’s guidance also suggests fewer than 15 words, with what the item is and its key traits first, because search engines show only about the first 50 to 60 characters of the page title Etsy makes from it.
How long can an Etsy tag be?
Up to 20 characters, and a listing can have up to 13 tags. Tags take letters, numbers and spaces; a straight apostrophe (') or a hyphen may be used inside a tag but not as its first character. A curly apostrophe (’), which many phones type, is not in Etsy’s list: write it as a straight one.
Which characters can’t I use in an Etsy title?
Etsy’s listing rules take letters, numbers, punctuation, maths symbols, spaces and ™ © ® in titles, so emoji, currency signs such as $ or €, and symbols such as ° or ½ are refused. %, :, & and + can each be used only once.
Should I use all 13 tags?
Etsy matches tags with shoppers’ searches, and each tag is another chance to be found, so use all 13 with different phrases: what the item is, its materials, style, uses, occasions and who it is for. A tag can be a short phrase, like “silver earrings”.
Where do I get my listings CSV?
On Etsy.com: Shop Manager → Settings → Options → Download Data, then Download CSV under Currently for Sale Listings. Drop that file on the Whole shop tab; it is read in your browser and never uploaded.
Do I need a pass?
To see every issue of a listing, copy the cleaned version and audit a whole shop, yes: a Premium pass unlocks every Premium tool. Without a pass you see a free preview: the score and the first three issues of one listing with their fixes, and the counts for a shop file.
