About the CGPA Calculator
Your CGPA (cumulative grade point average) combines all your semesters so far. Under the UGC Choice Based Credit System it is credit-weighted: each semester’s SGPA is multiplied by that semester’s credits, the results are added and the total is divided by all the credits — so a 26-credit semester counts for more than a 20-credit one. Enter your SGPAs and credits and the calculator gives your CGPA with the full working.
To plan ahead, leave the SGPA empty for the semesters still to come and type a target CGPA: you get the average SGPA you need in them, the best CGPA still possible and whether the target is within reach. Tick What-if on a semester to try an SGPA without counting it. A simple average of SGPAs is available too, but only for universities whose rules define CGPA that way.
How to use it
- Enter each completed semester’s SGPA and credits (both are on your grade card).
- Keep Credit-weighted (UGC) unless your university’s regulations say the CGPA is the plain average of SGPAs.
- For planning, add the semesters still to come with their credits and an empty SGPA, then type your target CGPA.
- Tick What-if to see how an expected SGPA would change your CGPA.
- Copy the result or download the table as CSV. To work out a semester’s SGPA from its courses, use the SGPA calculator.
Examples
Credits 20, 22, 25, 26, 26, 25 with SGPAs 6.9, 7.8, 5.6, 6.0, 6.3, 8.0
CGPA 6.73: (20×6.9 + 22×7.8 + 25×5.6 + 26×6.0 + 26×6.3 + 25×8.0) ÷ 144 = 969.4 ÷ 144
A plain average of the six SGPAs would be 6.77 — different, because the semesters have different credits.
First four semesters above (605.6 credit points over 93 credits), two to come with 26 and 25 credits, target 7.0
You need an average SGPA of 7.90: (7.0 × 144 − 605.6) ÷ 51 = 7.89… rounded up
Same semesters, target 8.0
It would need 10.72 — above 10 — so the best CGPA still possible is 7.75
How CGPA is calculated
CGPA = Σ(Ci × Si) ÷ Σ Ci, where Si is the SGPA of semester i and Ci the total credits of that semester. The UGC guidelines round SGPA and CGPA to two decimal places and report them on the transcript; this calculator rounds half up (6.735 becomes 6.74) and shows the unrounded figure in the working.
Calculating from SGPAs gives the same result as working over every course of every semester — Σ(credits × grade point) ÷ Σ credits — because each SGPA already is that average for its semester — apart from the rounding of each SGPA to two decimals and any grade that changed later, such as a cleared backlog. Some universities define CGPA over the courses directly — JNTUH, for one, and VTU, whose 2021 and 2025 schemes count only the courses passed (clauses 21OB 13.1 and 25OB 25.0).
Credit-weighted or simple average?
The UGC CBCS formula weights each semester by its credits. A plain average of SGPAs gives the same answer only when every semester has the same credits — in the UGC example, 6.77 instead of 6.73. Use Average of SGPAs only if your university’s regulations say the CGPA is the average of the semester GPAs.
Planning for a target CGPA
With credit weighting, the average SGPA you need over the remaining semesters is
(target × all credits − credit points so far) ÷ credits still to come
and with the simple average, (target × all semesters − sum of SGPAs so far) ÷ semesters still to come. The figure is rounded up to two decimals. If it is above the scale maximum the target cannot be reached; the calculator then shows the best CGPA still possible (the maximum SGPA in every remaining semester).

Limitations
- Your university’s transcript is the official CGPA; rules for repeated courses, improvement exams, extra credits or “best credits” (JNTUH R25, for example, counts the best 160 credits) are not applied.
- Converting CGPA to a percentage follows each university’s own formula (for example CGPA × 10 at Anna University and VTU, (CGPA − 0.5) × 10 for JNTUH R22) and is not done here.
- Up to 24 semesters, each with more than 0 and up to 100 credits; SGPA scales out of 10, 5 or 4.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate CGPA from SGPA?
Multiply each semester’s SGPA by its credits, add the results and divide by the total credits. With the UGC example: 969.4 ÷ 144 = 6.73.
Can I just average my SGPAs?
Only if every semester has the same credits, or your university’s rules say so. Otherwise the plain average is wrong — in the UGC example it gives 6.77 instead of 6.73. The calculator shows both when they differ.
What SGPA do I need to reach my target CGPA?
Add the remaining semesters with their credits (SGPA left empty) and type your target. The calculator gives the average SGPA you need over them, for example 7.90 to reach 7.0 after the first four UGC example semesters.
I don’t know my semester credits. What can I do?
They are on your grade card or in your programme’s scheme of study. Without them, the average of SGPAs is only an estimate of the credit-weighted CGPA, and an exact one only if all semesters carry the same credits.
How do I convert my CGPA to a percentage?
Use the formula in your university’s regulations — there is no single national rule. For example, Anna University and VTU use CGPA × 10, and JNTUH R22 uses (CGPA − 0.5) × 10.
