About the Final Grade Calculator

Enter your current grade, how much the final exam counts and the course grade you are aiming for: the calculator gives the score you need on the final, a table with the score needed for every letter on your grading scale, and the lowest and highest course grade still possible. If your course counts points instead of percentages, switch to Points and enter points earned, points possible and what the final is worth.

In Grade I’ll get mode it works the other way round: type a final exam score — the one you expect, or the one you got — to see your course grade, with a table of course grades for final scores from 100% down to 0%.

How to use it

  1. Choose Score I need (what you need on the final) or Grade I’ll get (the course grade for a final score).
  2. Pick how the final counts: a % of the grade (for example 25%, from your syllabus) or points (for example 200 points on top of the 500 so far).
  3. Enter your current grade — your grade on everything except the final — or your points earned and possible so far.
  4. Type the course grade you want or pick its letter; in reverse mode, type the final exam score.
  5. Read the result and the tables. A warning appears if you would need more than 100%. Check the grading scale under the form if your syllabus uses other cut-offs.

Examples

Aiming for a B
Input
Current grade 85%, final worth 25%, target 80%
Result
You need 65%: (80 − 85 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = (80 − 63.75) ÷ 0.25

The table shows the other letters: an A (90%) would need 105% — out of reach without extra credit — and a D (60%) is already secured, because even 0% on the final leaves you with 63.75%.

A final worth 30%
Input
Current grade 85%, final worth 30%, target 80%
Result
You need 68.34% (68.333… rounded up)
Points instead of percentages
Input
430 of 500 points so far, final worth 200 points, target 80%
Result
You need 130 of 200 points (65%): 80% × 700 − 430 = 130
The grade a final score gives
Input
Current grade 85%, final worth 25%, final exam score 72%
Result
Course grade 81.75% (B): 85 × 0.75 + 72 × 0.25

The formula

With the final worth w of the course grade (25% → w = 0.25), your course grade is the weighted average of what you have now and the final:

course grade = current × (1 − w) + final × w

Solving for the final score gives the score needed for a target grade:

required = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w

In points mode the final is worth X points on top of the P points possible so far, so w = X ÷ (P + X), your current grade is points earned ÷ P, and the points needed are target × (P + X) − points earned.

The score needed is rounded up to two decimal places, so the figure shown is always enough — 68.333…% shows as 68.34%. Course grades are rounded half up to two decimals, and the letter is read from the rounded figure.

Reading the results

  • Over 100%: the target cannot be reached with the final alone, unless your course offers extra credit. The highest grade you can still finish with is shown under With 100% on the final.
  • Already secured: even 0% on the final keeps you at or above that grade (assuming the final is counted as described and nothing else changes).
  • With 0% / 100% on the final: the range your course grade can still end up in.

Limitations

  • Assumes your current grade already includes everything except the final and that the final’s weight is fixed. Rules such as “the final replaces your lowest test”, dropped scores, curves or a minimum mark on the final itself are not modelled.
  • If some coursework is still ungraded, your current grade may change before the final — use the grade calculator to plan several pieces of work at once.
  • Grades up to 150% and final weights from just above 0% to 100% are accepted, to allow for extra credit.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate what I need on my final?

Subtract the part of the grade you already have from your target, then divide by the final’s weight: (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w. With 85% now, a final worth 25% and a target of 80%: (80 − 63.75) ÷ 0.25 = 65%.

What if I need more than 100% on the final?

Then that grade is out of reach through the final alone. The calculator shows a warning and the highest course grade you can still get — with 100% on the final — and the table shows which lower letters are still possible.

My final exam is worth points, not a percentage. What do I do?

Choose Points and enter the points you have earned so far, the points possible so far and what the final is worth. The calculator works out the final’s weight — 200 points on top of 500 is 200 ÷ 700 = 28.57% — and gives the points and percentage you need.

What should I enter as my current grade?

Your grade on all the work before the final, as your gradebook shows it. If some of that work is not graded yet, your current grade can still change; the grade calculator handles several ungraded pieces of work.

Can I see what grade I will get for a certain final score?

Yes — switch to Grade I’ll get and type the final exam score. A second table always lists the course grade for final scores from 100% down to 0% in steps of 10.

Which letter-grade scale is used?

A–F with 90/80/70/60 cut-offs by default. Open Grading scale to switch to plus/minus bands or type your syllabus’s own cut-offs; your scale is remembered in this browser.
