GPA Scale Converter (CGPA ↔ GPA ↔ %)
CGPA, percentage, letter grade and 4.0 GPA in one converter, by two labelled methods.
Both methods
| Scale | Proportional | College Board chart |
|---|
CGPA reference chart
| CGPA | Percentage | 4.0 GPA, proportional | 4.0 GPA, chart (letter) |
|---|
Percentage = CGPA × 10 in both methods. The letter and the chart GPA come from the College Board chart.
Indicative only
Admissions offices may recalculate your GPA by their own criteria, and evaluators such as WES convert each course on your transcript — so an official figure can differ from both methods.
About the GPA Scale Converter (CGPA ↔ GPA ↔ %)
Turn a 10-point CGPA, a percentage or a letter grade into a 4.0-scale GPA, or a GPA back into the others. You choose the method, and every result says which one it used and shows the working: the College Board chart (A 90–100% = 4.0, B 80–89% = 3.0, C 70–79% = 2.0, D 66–69% = 1.0, E/F below 65% = 0.0) or a proportional mapping that keeps the same share of the maximum on every scale (CGPA 8.5 = 85% = 3.4 on 4.0).
The two methods can differ by more than a whole grade point, and neither is what an admissions office does: colleges may recalculate your GPA by their own criteria, and evaluators such as WES convert each course on your transcript. A side-by-side table and a CGPA reference chart make the difference visible, so you can quote a figure with the method next to it.
How to use it
- Choose what you convert from — 10-point CGPA, percentage, 4.0 GPA or letter grade — and what you convert to.
- Type the value, or pick the letter.
- Choose the method: Proportional (the same share of the maximum) or the College Board chart (grade bands).
- Read the result and its working, compare both methods in the table, and use the CGPA reference chart for other values. Copy result keeps all of it with the source.
Examples
CGPA 8.5 (10-point)
Proportional: 8.5 ÷ 10 × 4 = 3.40 · College Board chart: 85% is a B = 3.0
92%
College Board chart: A = 4.0 · Proportional: 92 ÷ 100 × 4 = 3.68 · CGPA 9.20
4.0 GPA 3.4
Proportional: 3.4 ÷ 4 × 100 = 85% (CGPA 8.50). On the chart 3.4 lies between B and A: an average has no percentage there.
B+
College Board chart: B = 3.0 (80–89%). The chart has no plus or minus grades.
The two methods
College Board chart. BigFuture’s chart turns a grade into grade points: A (90–100%) 4.0, B (80–89%) 3.0, C (70–79%) 2.0, D (66–69%) 1.0, E/F (below 65%) 0.0. It prints D from 66 and E/F below 65, so 65 itself is in neither row; this converter counts 65 as a D, like the site’s GPA calculator. The chart has no plus or minus grades.
Proportional. Each value keeps its share of the scale’s maximum: GPA = percentage ÷ 100 × 4, CGPA = percentage ÷ 10, so GPA = CGPA × 0.4 and percentage = GPA × 25. The letter shown with it is the chart band of that percentage.
In both methods a 10-point CGPA and a percentage are linked proportionally (CGPA × 10).
Why the two methods disagree
The chart is a step: every percentage from 80 to 89 is a B worth 3.0, and one more point turns it into a 4.0. The proportional method is a straight line. A CGPA of 8.9 is therefore 3.0 by the chart but 3.56 proportionally, and 9.0 is 4.0 by the chart but 3.60 proportionally. The chart was made for single course grades; applied to an average such as a CGPA, it exaggerates small differences at the band edges.
What admissions offices and evaluators do
College Board notes that the chart is a rough guide, that colleges may recalculate your GPA by their own criteria — counting only core academic classes, or removing or changing honours and AP weighting — and that many applications ask for your actual course grades. Credential evaluators work from your transcripts: a WES Course-by-Course evaluation lists every subject with its credits and grade and a calculated U.S. or Canadian GPA. A conversion of your overall CGPA or percentage, by either method here, is therefore indicative only. To convert course by course yourself, enter each course’s percentage in the GPA calculator.

Limitations
- Neither method is an official conversion. Universities, scholarship schemes and evaluators such as WES use their own methods, usually course by course from transcripts.
- A CGPA is linked to a percentage by × 10 here. If your board or university has its own rule (CBSE Class X used 9.5 × CGPA), convert with the CGPA to percentage calculator first and enter that percentage.
- Only the plain A–F letters of the College Board chart are converted; plus and minus grades are read as the plain letter.
- Weighted GPAs above 4.0 cannot be converted on a 4.0 scale: use your unweighted GPA.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert my CGPA to a 4.0 GPA?
Proportionally, divide by 10 and multiply by 4: a CGPA of 8.5 is 3.4. By the College Board chart, 8.5 is 85%, a B, which is 3.0. Both are indicative — evaluators such as WES convert each course on your transcript.
How do I convert a percentage to a GPA on a 4.0 scale?
On the College Board chart, 90–100% is 4.0, 80–89% is 3.0, 70–79% is 2.0, 66–69% is 1.0 and below 65% is 0.0. Proportionally, divide by 25: 85% is 3.4.
What is a 3.5 GPA as a percentage?
Proportionally 87.5% (3.5 ÷ 4 × 100), or a CGPA of 8.75. The College Board chart gives no percentage for 3.5: it is an average between B (3.0) and A (4.0), and the chart converts single grades.
Does WES use one of these formulas?
No. A WES Course-by-Course evaluation converts each subject on your transcript and calculates the GPA from them, so its result can differ from both methods here. Use these figures to get a feel, and the official evaluation where it is required.
Why does the chart give a lower GPA than the proportional method?
Below 90% it usually does, because its grade points are not a share of 100: a B starts at 80% but is worth 3.0, which is 75% of 4.0, and every score from 80% to 89% gets that same 3.0 (proportionally 3.20 to 3.56). From 90% it is the other way round: the chart gives 4.0, the proportional method 3.60 to 4.00.
How do I convert a CBSE or university CGPA?
If your board or university publishes a conversion — such as CBSE’s 9.5 × CGPA for Class X — turn your CGPA into a percentage with the CGPA to percentage calculator, then convert that percentage here.
