Tola, “10 grams” and 11.66 g

A tola is exactly 180 grains, 11.6638038 g, the British-Indian definition that jewellers still use. Some jewellers round it to 11.66 g, which is 0.038 g less on a 10-tola bar (116.638 g against 116.6 g) — the tola table shows both. Gold prices in India are usually quoted per 10 grams, and that is not a tola: check which one a price means before you compare.

Ratti for gold and for gems

For gold, a ratti is the goldsmith’s ratti, 1/96 tola (about 121.5 mg). Gemstones for astrology are often sold by the “pakki” ratti, 1.5 times as heavy (about 182.25 mg, 0.91 carat) — but sellers do not all use the same figure. A gem’s laboratory certificate gives its weight in carats, which is the reliable number; convert from that.

• Traditional units vary by region and trade (ratti, pakki ratti, tael, baht); the values here are the standard or legal ones named above — confirm with your jeweller when a bill uses a local variant.
