About the Lakh Crore Converter (to Million, Billion)
Convert between the Indian number scale — thousand, lakh (10⁵), crore (10⁷), arab (10⁹) and kharab (10¹¹) — and the international one — million (10⁶), billion (10⁹) and trillion (10¹²). Type an amount the way it appears in a newspaper, a payslip or a budget: 3.5 lakh crore, ₹12,50,000, 1.2 bn, 1 crore 20 lakh or twenty five lakh.
The result shows the number with Indian grouping (35,00,00,00,00,000) and international grouping (3,500,000,000,000), in words in both systems — including the traditional arab and kharab — and in every unit, from lakh and crore to million, billion and trillion. Everything is calculated exactly with whole-number arithmetic, so no digit is ever lost to rounding. A ready table lists 1 thousand to 1 lakh crore.
How to use it
- Type the amount in the box. Digits with commas (12,50,000 or 1,250,000), decimals, scale words (lakh, crore, arab, kharab, thousand, million, billion, trillion) and abbreviations (L, Cr, K, M, bn, tn) all work, with or without ₹ or $.
- Combine words:
3.5 lakh croremultiplies (3.5 × 10¹²),1 crore 20 lakhadds (1,20,00,000). - Read the headline conversion, then the number in both groupings, in words and in every unit.
- Copy any line, copy everything, or share a link to the amount.
- Use the ready table to see 1 thousand to 1 lakh crore at a glance; copy it or download it as CSV.
Examples
3.5 lakh crore
3.5 trillion · 35,00,00,00,00,000 · three lakh fifty thousand crore
₹12,50,000
₹12.5 lakh = ₹1.25 million · twelve lakh fifty thousand
1.2 bn
120 crore · 1,20,00,00,000 · one hundred twenty crore
1 crore 20 lakh
12 million · 1,20,00,000
750 million
75 crore · 75,00,00,000
45 kharab
4.5 trillion = 4.5 lakh crore
Common uses
- Reading Indian budget, GDP and company figures (“₹50 lakh crore”) in millions, billions or trillions.
- Turning a salary or a property price in lakh into millions for a form, a CV or a client abroad.
- Writing a large number correctly with commas in the Indian or the international style.
- Explaining the two number systems in class, with the ready table.
The Indian and international scales
- 1 lakh = 1,00,000 = 100 thousand (10⁵); 10 lakh = 1 million
- 1 crore = 1,00,00,000 = 10 million (10⁷); 100 crore = 1 billion = 1 arab
- 1 kharab = 100 arab = 10,000 crore = 100 billion (10¹¹)
- 1 lakh crore = 10 kharab = 1 trillion (10¹²)
So to go from crore to million multiply by 10, from crore to billion divide by 100, and from lakh crore to trillion keep the number: 3.5 lakh crore is 3.5 trillion.
Digit grouping
Indian grouping puts a comma after the last three digits and then after every two: 1,23,45,678. International grouping uses threes: 12,345,678. The Indian pattern is the en-IN number format in the Unicode CLDR locale data that phones and browsers use. Government of India Budget documents give amounts in ₹ crore with Indian grouping, and very large amounts are usually written as “lakh crore” rather than arab or kharab.
Arab, kharab and the long scale
Arab (10⁹) and kharab (10¹¹) are traditional names used in Hindi, Urdu and Nepali; Indian English documents prefer crore-based wording such as 100 crore or 1 lakh crore. Traditional names go on beyond kharab (neel, padma, shankh), but they are rarely used, so this converter stops at kharab.
The billion here is the short-scale billion (10⁹) used in English today. Some other languages use the long scale, where a billion is a million million (10¹²) and 10⁹ is a milliard.
Limitations
- Converts number scales, not currencies: ₹ or $ typed with the amount is kept as it is. Use a currency converter to change money from one currency to another.
- Amounts up to 21 digits (about 10²¹) and up to 12 decimal places are accepted.
- Number words are read for simple amounts (twenty five lakh, two hundred crore); for anything longer, type digits.
