About the Square Feet to Square Meters Converter

Convert square feet to square metres and square metres to square feet — type in either box and the other updates. A foot is exactly 0.3048 m, so a square foot is exactly 0.09290304 m²: m² = sq ft × 0.09290304 and sq ft = m² ÷ 0.09290304 (about × 10.764). A 1,000 sq ft flat is 92.90 m².

The formula

NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C gives 1 square foot = 0.092 903 04 m² exactly, 1 square yard = 9 square feet and 1 acre = 43 560 square feet (pp. C-11 and C-12).

• m² = sq ft × 0.09290304 — 1,500 sq ft = 139.35 m²
• sq ft = m² ÷ 0.09290304 (≈ m² × 10.7639) — 50 m² = 538.20 sq ft
• sq yd (gaj) = sq ft ÷ 9

For a room, multiply length by width in the same unit first: 12 ft 6 in × 10 ft = 12.5 ft × 10 ft = 125 sq ft = 11.61 m².

Carpet area, built-up area and super built-up area

Section 2(k) of the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act, 2016 defines carpet area as “the net usable floor area of an apartment, excluding the area covered by the external walls, areas under services shafts, exclusive balcony or verandah area and exclusive open terrace area, but includes the area covered by the internal partition walls of the apartment” (RERA Act text). When a promoter registers a project, section 4(2)(h) requires the carpet area of the apartments for sale.

“Built-up area” and “super built-up area” are not defined in the Act, and their use varies: in listings, built-up area usually adds the walls (and often balconies) to the carpet area, and super built-up area adds a share of lobbies, stairs and other common areas — so the same flat’s super area is bigger than its carpet area. Gaj, guntha, cents and local land units

Some Indian units are fixed multiples of the square foot: a gaj is a square yard (9 sq ft), a guntha is 1/40 acre (1,089 sq ft, a square of 33 ft) and a cent (decimal) is 1/100 acre (435.6 sq ft). The page shows them under the result. Bigha, biswa, katha, kanal and marla have different sizes in different states, so they are converted by the Land Area Converter, where you choose the state.

Rates per sq ft and per sq m

A rate per square metre is the rate per square foot divided by 0.09290304 (about × 10.764), and a rate per square yard is the rate per square foot × 9. So ₹5,000 per sq ft is ₹53,819.55 per m² and ₹45,000 per gaj. The rate panel works in any currency; it changes the area unit only.

Limitations

• The converter changes units; it does not measure a property or check the area a builder or document states.
• Carpet area under RERA excludes external walls, shafts, exclusive balconies and terraces; this page explains it, and the Carpet Area Calculator works it out.
