About the Weight Converter

Convert weights between metric units, US and imperial pounds, ounces, stones and tons, troy ounces and carats for precious metals and gems, and the traditional Indian tola, masha, ratti, chhatak, seer and maund. Type in either box and the other updates; every other unit is listed in the table underneath with the formula used.

The arithmetic is exact. Each unit is stored as its legal definition — a pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg, an ounce 1/16 lb, a grain 64.79891 mg, a carat 200 mg — and calculated with fractions, so results such as 1 stone = 6.35029318 kg are exact and printed in full.

Results are also shown as pounds and ounces and as stones and pounds, and you can type 10 lb 4 oz or 11 st 6 lb directly.

How to use it

  1. Type a number in From and pick its unit, then pick the unit you want in To. You can also type in the To box to convert the other way.
  2. Or type a whole conversion in Quick convert — 70 kg to lb, 10 lb 4 oz to kg, 11 st 6 lb in kg, 2 tola to g — and press Enter.
  3. For a weight written in two parts, fill in Pounds and ounces or Stones and pounds; it is converted to the To unit straight away.
  4. Copy the result or a link, download the table of every unit as CSV, or use Convert a list for a whole column of weights.

Common uses

  • Body weight in kg, lb or stones and pounds for fitness apps, forms and doctors abroad.
  • Recipes and parcels in grams, ounces and pounds.
  • Gold and silver in grams, tolas and troy ounces; gemstones in carats.
  • Old records, rations and market weights in seers and maunds.
  • Farm produce and freight in quintals, tonnes and short or long tons.

Where the conversion factors come from

Customary units follow NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix C; the stone, quintal and metric carat are also defined in the UK Weights and Measures Act 1985, Schedule 1.

  • Pound = 0.45359237 kg exactly (1959); ounce = 1/16 lb = 28.349523125 g; grain = 1/7000 lb = 64.79891 mg.
  • Stone = 14 lb = 6.35029318 kg; short ton (US) = 2,000 lb = 907.18474 kg; long ton (UK) = 2,240 lb = 1,016.0469088 kg.
  • Troy ounce = 480 grains = 31.1034768 g, used for gold and silver prices.
  • Metric carat = 200 mg for gemstones (the “karat” of gold purity is a different thing).
  • Quintal = 100 kg and tonne = 1,000 kg.

Tola, masha, ratti, chhatak, seer and maund

The traditional Indian weights are built on the tola of 180 grains: 8 ratti = 1 masha, 12 masha = 1 tola, 5 tola = 1 chhatak, 16 chhatak (80 tola) = 1 seer and 40 seer = 1 maund. With the grain fixed at 64.79891 mg this gives 1 tola = 11.6638038 g, 1 seer = 933.104304 g and 1 maund = 37.32417216 kg.

When India went metric, the First Schedule of the Standards of Weights and Measures Act, 1956 (Gazette of India) fixed the rates for converting old weights: 1 tola = 0.0116638 kg, 1 seer = 0.93310 kg and 1 maund = 37.3242 kg. The values here agree with those rates to every printed digit. The Act does not list the masha, ratti or chhatak; they are the customary fractions above.

Jewellers often round the tola to 11.66 g, and gem dealers use other “ratti” values, so check the figure on your bill.

Mass, weight and force

In everyday speech “weight” means mass, which is what this converter handles. Physicists use weight for the force of gravity on a mass, measured in newtons. Under standard gravity (9.80665 m/s², adopted in 1901) a 1 kg mass pulls with 9.80665 N, which is also called one kilogram-force (kgf). Each result shows that force, but the actual pull varies slightly with latitude and height.

Limitations

  • Regional seers and maunds used before 1956 (which differed from place to place) are not included; the standard 80-tola seer is used.
  • Pounds-and-ounces and stones-and-pounds lines are shown for masses up to 100 tonnes; they are left out when they would round to zero (0 lb 0 oz). Rounded figures in them are marked ≈.
  • Force units (N, kN, kgf, lbf) are not converted here; only the standard-gravity force of the mass is shown.
  • Inputs are limited to 60 characters; very large or very small results are shown in scientific notation.

Frequently asked questions

How many pounds are in a kilogram?

About 2.2046 — exactly 1 ÷ 0.45359237 = 2.20462262… lb. In the other direction 1 lb is exactly 0.45359237 kg, so 10 lb = 4.5359237 kg.

How do I convert stones and pounds to kilograms?

Multiply the stones by 14 and add the pounds, then multiply by 0.45359237. For 11 st 6 lb: 11 × 14 + 6 = 160 lb, and 160 × 0.45359237 = 72.5747792 kg. Type 11 st 6 lb to kg or use the Stones and pounds boxes.

How many grams is one tola?

A tola of 180 grains is exactly 11.6638038 g; the 1956 Indian conversion schedule gives 0.0116638 kg. Jewellers often round it to 11.66 g. Ten tola is exactly 116.638038 g, about 116.64 g.

What is the difference between a troy ounce and an ounce?

A troy ounce (480 grains, 31.1034768 g) is used for precious metals; the ordinary avoirdupois ounce (437.5 grains, 28.349523125 g) is used for everything else. A troy ounce is about 9.7% heavier.

Is a ton 1,000 kg?

A tonne (metric ton) is 1,000 kg. The US short ton is 2,000 lb (907.18474 kg) and the UK long ton is 2,240 lb (1,016.0469088 kg). Pick the one your source uses.

Is a kgf the same as a kg?

No. The kilogram is a unit of mass; the kilogram-force is the force gravity exerts on 1 kg under standard gravity, 9.80665 newtons. They have the same number only when standard gravity is assumed, which is why gauges and load ratings often write “kg” for kgf.
