About the Acres to Hectares Converter

Convert acres to hectares and hectares to acres — type in either box and the other updates. An acre is exactly 4,046.8564224 m² (43,560 square feet) and a hectare exactly 10,000 m², so hectares = acres × 0.40468564224 and acres = hectares ÷ 0.40468564224 (about × 2.471). 10 acres is 4.05 ha, and 1 ha is 2.47 acres.

The formula

NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C gives 1 acre = 43,560 square feet = 4,046.856 422 4 m² = 0.404 685 642 24 hectare, all exact (pp. C-11 and C-12). The BIPM SI Brochure, Table 8, defines the hectare as 1 hm² = 10⁴ m², a unit accepted for use with the SI.

• hectares = acres × 0.40468564224 — 25 acres = 10.12 ha
• acres = hectares ÷ 0.40468564224 (≈ hectares × 2.471) — 5 ha = 12.36 acres
• square feet = acres × 43,560

In your head: a hectare is about 2½ acres (1 % high), and an acre about 0.4 ha.

Guntha, cents and square plots

A guntha is 1/40 acre (1,089 sq ft, a square of 33 ft) and a cent — also called a decimal or dismil — is 1/100 acre (435.6 sq ft), so 1 acre = 40 guntha = 100 cents. A record such as 2 acres 20 guntha is 2.5 acres.

NIST notes that a square acre is about 208.710 ft on each side. The side of a square is the square root of its area, so a hectare is exactly 100 m × 100 m and a guntha 33 ft × 33 ft. Real plots are seldom square: to find the area of an irregular plot from its sides, use the Plot Area Calculator.

Bigha, kanal and other local units

Bigha, biswa, katha, kanal and marla are not fixed units: a bigha, for example, has different sizes in different states and sometimes districts. This page therefore does not guess them. The Land Area Converter converts them for the state you choose, or for a local size you enter.

Limitations

• Acre means the international acre of 43,560 sq ft with the 0.3048 m foot. The US survey acre (4,046.8726 m²), based on the deprecated US survey foot, is not used.
• Bigha, kanal, marla and other local units vary by state and are converted by the Land Area Converter.
• The square-plot side helps to picture an area; it is not a measurement of any real plot.
• Conversions are exact; only the display is rounded (10 significant figures, or choose a Precision).
