India and Japan: Indian jewellers each publish their own chart, and Japan’s customary sizes are not its ISO-based standard (JIS S 4700). The Indian sizes here come from ORRA’s published chart and the Japanese ones from the customary rule (13 mm across for size 1, ⅓ mm per size); other jewellers’ charts can differ by a size or more. When you order, give your jeweller the circumference or diameter in mm as well.
Measure a ring on your screen (calibrate with a bank card)

1. Calibrate with a card

Hold any bank, debit or ID card (85.60 × 53.98 mm) flat against the screen with one corner in the top-left corner of the outline, and move the slider until the outline is exactly the size of the card. If the card does not fit, turn your phone sideways.

Not calibrated yet: the outline uses the browser’s 96 pixels per inch, which is rarely exact on a real screen.

2. Match a ring that fits

Lay the ring flat on the screen over the circle and resize the circle until the inside edge of the ring just touches the outside of the line.

How to measure your finger with paper or string
  1. Cut a thin strip of paper (or use string that does not stretch) and wrap it snugly around the base of the finger, where the ring will sit.
  2. Mark where the end overlaps, unwrap it and measure from the end to the mark in millimetres: that is the inner circumference.
  3. Choose Circumference (mm) above and type it. If your knuckle is wider, measure over it too — the ring must pass it — and pick a size between the two.
  4. Measure two or three times at the end of the day, when fingers are largest; cold fingers are smaller. Wide bands fit tighter than thin ones.

About the Ring Size Converter

Convert a ring size between the US & Canadian numbers, UK, Irish and Australian letters, the EU/ISO circumference in millimetres, Swiss, Italian and Spanish sizes, the German and Dutch diameter, and the Japanese and Indian scales. Start from the size you know, the inside diameter of a ring that fits, a paper-strip or string measurement of your finger — or lay a ring on your screen after calibrating it with any bank card.

Every result shows the nearest size in each system and the inner circumference that size stands for, so you can see how close the match is. Indian sizes come from one published jeweller’s chart (Indian jewellers each use their own) and Japanese sizes from the customary Japanese rule, and both are flagged as such.

How to use it

  1. Pick the system and type the size — 7, 7¼ or 7 1/2 for US, N or N½ for UK — or type the system with it: UK N½, EU 54, India 12.
  2. To measure: choose Circumference (mm) and type the length of a paper strip or string wrapped around the finger, or Inner diameter (mm) for the inside of a ring that fits. Typing 54 mm or 17.3 mm also works: 12–25 mm is read as a diameter, 36–78 mm as a circumference.
  3. Read the headline sizes and the table: Nearest size, the circumference that size stands for, and notes on the scales that are not standardised.
  4. No tape measure? Open Measure a ring on your screen, match the outline to a bank card, then match the circle to the inside of a ring and press Use this measurement.
  5. Copy the result, share a link, or copy, download and print the ring size chart.

Common uses

  • Buying a ring online from a shop in another country — a US size from a UK jeweller, an EU size from an Italian brand.
  • Finding your size at home with a strip of paper, a piece of string or a ring that already fits.
  • Choosing a surprise engagement ring from a borrowed ring’s inside diameter.
  • Ordering from an Indian jeweller: give the size and the circumference in mm.

How the systems are defined

Every system describes the inside of the ring:

  • EU / ISO 8653: the inner circumference in mm — size 54 is 54 mm around. Used in France, Belgium, Austria, the Nordic countries and most of continental Europe.
  • US & Canada: size 0 is 0.458 in (11.63 mm) across and each size adds 0.032 in (0.8128 mm), in quarter sizes; so the circumference is about 36.5 + 2.55 × size mm.
  • UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand (BS 6820): letters with half sizes, 1.25 mm of circumference per letter, from A = 37.5 mm (C = 40 mm) to Z = 68.75 mm, then Z+1, Z+2 …
  • Switzerland, Italy, Spain: the circumference minus 40 mm — size 14 is 54 mm.
  • Germany, Netherlands: the inner diameter in mm; Russia rounds it to half a millimetre.
  • Japan (customary 号): 13 mm across for size 1 and ⅓ mm more per size; the Japanese standard JIS S 4700 uses the ISO circumference instead.

Indian ring sizes

Indian jewellers do not share one ring-size scale: each publishes its own chart, and the charts can disagree by a size or more. This converter uses ORRA’s published chart for sizes 7 to 26 (size 12 is 54.4 mm around, 17.3 mm across) and says so in the result. Before you order, ask your jeweller for their chart or give them the circumference in millimetres.

Measuring on screen

A web page does not know how big its pixels are, so the on-screen sizer first asks you to match an outline to a bank card — every bank, debit and most ID cards are 85.60 × 53.98 mm (the ID-1 size of ISO/IEC 7810). The calibration is saved for this screen in this browser. Then match the circle to the inside edge of a ring. A 0.1 mm error in the diameter is about ⅛ of a US size, so check against a second ring or a ruler if you can.

Limitations

  • A conversion gives the nearest size; real rings vary with the band width, the profile (comfort-fit bands feel larger) and the jeweller’s mandrel. Wide bands fit tighter.
  • Indian and Japanese results come from one published chart and the customary rule; other jewellers can differ.
  • The on-screen sizer is only as accurate as its calibration and how well the ring is lined up. It is a guide, not a replacement for a jeweller’s ring gauge.
  • Fingers change size with temperature and the time of day; measure more than once.

Frequently asked questions

What is a US size 7 ring in UK and EU sizes?

US 7 is UK N½ and EU 54 (54.4 mm around, 17.3 mm across). In Swiss and Italian sizes it is 14.

How do I find my ring size at home?

Wrap a strip of paper around the base of your finger, mark the overlap and measure it in mm — that is the circumference. Choose Circumference (mm) and type it. Or measure across the inside of a ring that fits and choose Inner diameter (mm).

What is ring size 54?

In the EU/ISO system it means 54 mm around the inside. That is nearest to US 6¾ (53.8 mm) and UK N (53.75 mm); US 7 is 54.4 mm. In Swiss and Italian sizes it is 14.

What is the Indian equivalent of US 7?

On ORRA’s chart it is 12 (54.4 mm around). Indian jewellers’ charts differ, so check with the jeweller and give them the size in mm.

Is the on-screen ring sizer accurate?

It can be close once calibrated with a bank card, but a small misalignment changes the result by a fraction of a size. Use it as a guide and confirm with a jeweller’s gauge for an expensive ring.

Should I choose the larger size if I am between two?

Usually yes, especially for wide bands and if your knuckle is larger than the base of your finger. A ring that is slightly loose is easier to fix than one that will not go on.
