Which gallon?

Type in either box. Fractions (1/2), a unit after the number (5 gal, 2 qt, 500 ml) and commas for thousands (1,000) all work.

Examples
1 L ≈ 0.2641720524 gal (US)

Rounded · gal (US) = L ÷ 3.785411784

  • Imperial (UK) gallons: ≈ 0.2199692483 gal (UK)
  • Gallons, quarts and pints (US): ≈ 1 qt 0.11 pt
  • Quarts and pints (US): ≈ 1.06 qt or ≈ 2.11 pt

Price per litre or per gallon

Type a price and choose what it is per; it is shown per litre, per US gallon and per imperial gallon. Any currency works — the unit changes, the money does not.

About the Liters to Gallons Converter

Convert litres to gallons and gallons to litres — type in either box and the other updates. A US gallon is exactly 3.785411784 L (231 cubic inches) and an imperial (UK) gallon exactly 4.54609 L, so US gallons = litres ÷ 3.785411784 and imperial gallons = litres ÷ 4.54609. 10 L is 2.64 US gallons or 2.20 imperial gallons.

Under the result you see the other gallon, the same amount in gallons, quarts and pints (10 L = 2 gal 2 qt 1.13 pt in US measure), and cubic metres for big tanks. The price panel turns a price per litre into a price per US or imperial gallon and back, to compare fuel and liquid prices. Printable tables list fuel-tank sizes, water tanks from 100 to 20,000 L, litres from 1 to 100 and gallons from ¼ to 100.

How to use it

  1. Type a volume in Litres or Gallons; the other box updates as you type. A unit after the number also works: 5 gal, 2 qt, 3 pt, 500 ml.
  2. Choose US gallons or Imperial gallons at the top. In the imperial mode a plain gal, qt, pt or fl oz means an imperial gallon, quart, pint or fluid ounce.
  3. Read the lines under the result: the other gallon, gallons-quarts-pints, quarts and pints, and cubic metres for large amounts.
  4. To compare prices, type a price in Price per litre or per gallon and choose what it is per; it is shown per litre, per US gallon and per imperial gallon.
  5. Copy the result or a link, or print, copy or download the fuel-tank, water-tank, litre and gallon tables.

Examples

One US gallon
Input
1 US gal
Result
3.785411784 L (exact)

231 cubic inches of 16.387064 mL each.

One imperial gallon
Input
1 imperial gal
Result
4.54609 L (exact)

About 1.2 US gallons.

A 10-litre can
Input
10 L
Result
2.64 US gal = 2 gal 2 qt 1.13 pt

10 ÷ 3.785411784 = 2.6417 US gallons, or 2.20 imperial gallons.

A car fuel tank
Input
50 L
Result
13.21 US gal or 11.00 imperial gal

50 ÷ 3.785411784 = 13.2086; 50 ÷ 4.54609 = 10.9985.

A water tank
Input
1,000 L
Result
264.17 US gal = 1 m³

1,000 litres is one cubic metre.

A fuel price
Input
105.50 per litre
Result
399.36 per US gallon, 479.61 per imperial gallon

105.50 × 3.785411784 and 105.50 × 4.54609.

Common uses

  • Reading a car’s fuel-tank size, a fuel price or a mileage figure given in the other unit.
  • Comparing a price per litre with a price per gallon.
  • Sizing water tanks, drums, aquariums and cans sold in litres or gallons.
  • Following American or British instructions that give liquids in gallons, quarts or pints.

The formula

NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C gives the US gallon as 231 cubic inches = 3.785 411 784 L exactly, with 4 liquid quarts or 8 liquid pints to the gallon (pp. C-6, C-16 and C-25). Schedule 1 of the UK Weights and Measures Act 1985 defines the imperial gallon as 4.546 09 cubic decimetres (litres), the quart as ¼ gallon and the pint as 0.568 261 25 dm³.

  • US gallons = litres ÷ 3.785411784 — 20 L = 5.28 US gal
  • litres = US gallons × 3.785411784 — 5 US gal = 18.93 L
  • imperial gallons = litres ÷ 4.54609 — 20 L = 4.40 imperial gal

In your head: a US gallon is about 3.8 L and an imperial gallon about 4.5 L, so 1 L is about ¼ US gallon.

US or imperial gallon?

The imperial gallon is 20 % bigger: 1 imperial gallon = 1.20095 US gallons, and its quarts and pints are bigger by the same share (a US pint is 473.18 mL, an imperial pint 568.26 mL). The US gallon is the one in American prices, recipes and specifications; the imperial gallon is the gallon of UK law. When a figure does not say which gallon it means, look at where it comes from — and mind that the fluid ounce goes the other way: a US fluid ounce is about 4 % larger than a UK one.

Prices per litre and per gallon

A price per gallon is the price per litre times the litres in a gallon:

  • price per US gallon = price per litre × 3.785411784
  • price per imperial gallon = price per litre × 4.54609
  • price per litre = price per US gallon ÷ 3.785411784

So 105.50 per litre is 399.36 per US gallon, and 3.50 per US gallon is 0.92 per litre. The panel changes the unit only: to compare prices in two currencies, convert the money first with the Currency Converter.

Limitations

  • Gallon means the US liquid gallon or the imperial gallon; the converter does not use US dry measures (dry quarts and pecks).
  • Litres and gallons measure volume. To get kilograms you need the liquid’s density — a litre of water has a mass of about 1 kg, a litre of fuel or oil less.
  • The price panel converts the unit of a price only; it adds no taxes and changes no currency.
  • Conversions are exact; only the display is rounded (10 significant figures, or choose a Precision).

Frequently asked questions

How many litres are in a gallon?

A US gallon is 3.785 L (exactly 3.785411784 L) and an imperial gallon 4.546 L (exactly 4.54609 L).

How many gallons is 1 litre?

1 L = 0.264 US gallons or 0.220 imperial gallons.

How many litres are in 5 gallons?
