About the Feet to Meters Converter

Convert feet to metres and metres to feet on one page — type in either box and the other updates. The foot is exactly 0.3048 m, so metres = feet × 0.3048 and feet = metres ÷ 0.3048 (about 3.28084 ft in a metre). The conversion is exact: 6 ft is exactly 1.8288 m and 35,000 ft is exactly 10,668 m.

Feet and inches work both ways. Type 5 ft 7 in or 5'7" (or use the Feet and inches fields), and every length in metres also comes back as feet and inches, to 0.01 inch and to the nearest 1/16 inch. Two printable tables list 1–100 ft and 1–100 m. For old US land records there is a US survey foot mode: that foot is 1200/3937 m, 2 parts per million longer, which matters for coordinates in the millions of feet.

How to use it

  1. Type a length in Feet or Metres; the other box updates as you type. Feet and inches (5'7", 5 ft 7 in) and a unit after the number (2.7 m in the feet box) also work.
  2. On a phone, enter a length such as 5 ft 7 in in the Feet and inches fields.
  3. Read the feet and inches, centimetres or inches under the result.
  4. For a US deed, plat or state plane coordinate recorded in survey feet before 2023, choose US survey foot (typing 100 us ft or 100 survey feet switches to it).
  5. Copy the result or a link, or print, copy or download the 1–100 ft and 1–100 m tables.

Examples

Feet and inches to metres
Input
5 ft 7 in
Result
1.7018 m (170.18 cm)

5 × 12 + 7 = 67 in, and 67 × 0.0254 = 1.7018 m.

A ceiling height
Input
8 ft
Result
2.4384 m

8 × 0.3048. A 2.7 m ceiling is 8 ft 10.3 in.

A building height
Input
100 m
Result
328.08 ft

100 ÷ 0.3048 = 328.0839895 ft = 328 ft 1 in.

An aircraft altitude
Input
35,000 ft
Result
10,668 m

Exactly 35,000 × 0.3048.

One metre
Input
1 m
Result
3.28084 ft = 3 ft 3 3/8 in

1 ÷ 0.3048 = 3.2808399 ft; 0.2808 ft × 12 = 3.37 in.

A US survey-foot coordinate
Input
2,000,000 US survey ft
Result
609,601.22 m

Read with the ordinary foot, the same number would be 609,600 m — 1.22 m less.

Common uses

  • Room, ceiling and door heights from a plan in the other unit.
  • Building heights, altitudes, flight levels and elevations.
  • People’s heights in feet and inches (see also the Height Converter).
  • Old US surveys, deeds and state plane coordinates recorded in US survey feet.
  • Printing a feet-to-metres chart for a site office or a classroom.

The formula

NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix C gives 1 foot = 12 × 0.0254 m = 0.3048 m exactly (p. C-9) — the international foot of 1959.

  • metres = feet × 0.3048 — 8 ft × 0.3048 = 2.4384 m
  • feet = metres ÷ 0.3048 — 2.7 m ÷ 0.3048 = 8.858 ft
  • centimetres = feet × 30.48, and 1 in = 2.54 cm

In your head: metres ≈ feet × 0.3 (about 1.6 % low), feet ≈ metres × 3.3 (about 0.6 % high).

Feet and inches

To turn decimal feet into feet and inches, multiply the decimal part by 12: 8.858 ft = 8 ft + 0.858 × 12 in = 8 ft 10.3 in. To go the other way, divide the inches by 12 first: 5 ft 7 in = 5 + 7/12 = 5.5833 ft = 1.7018 m.

Watch out for decimal feet that look like feet and inches: 5.7 ft is 5 ft 8.4 in, not 5 ft 7 in.

The US survey foot

Until the end of 2022 the United States had two feet: the international foot (0.3048 m) and the US survey foot (1200/3937 m ≈ 0.3048006 m), used by land surveyors and many state plane coordinate systems. The Federal Register notice 85 FR 62698 deprecated the survey foot on 31 December 2022: since 1 January 2023 it should be used only for historic and legacy data. NIST Handbook 44 still lists 1 US survey foot = 1200/3937 m exactly and 1 international foot = 0.999 998 survey foot.

The two differ by 2 parts per million — “approximately 0.01 foot per mile”, as the notice puts it (3.2 mm). That is too small to matter on a building plan, but not for coordinates: 2,000,000 survey feet is 1.22 m more than 2,000,000 feet. Choose US survey foot only when a record says it uses survey feet.

Limitations

  • Conversions are exact; only the display is rounded. Feet and inches are shown to 0.01 inch and to the nearest 1/16 inch.
  • The US survey foot mode is for US land records made before 2023; building plans, heights, altitudes and sports use the foot of 0.3048 m.
  • For people’s heights the Height Converter reads every way a height is written and has a chart.
  • Square and cubic feet are not converted here — use the Area Converter or the Volume Converter.

Frequently asked questions

How many metres is 1 foot?

Exactly 0.3048 m, which is 30.48 cm.

How many feet are in a metre?

1 m = 1 ÷ 0.3048 = 3.28084 ft, or 3 ft 3 3/8 in.

How do I convert feet and inches to metres?

Turn the length into inches (feet × 12 + inches), then multiply by 0.0254: 5 ft 11 in = 71 in = 1.8034 m.

Is 5.7 feet the same as 5 feet 7 inches?

No. 5.7 ft is 5 ft 8.4 in (0.7 × 12 = 8.4 in) = 1.73736 m, while 5 ft 7 in is 1.7018 m.

Should I use the US survey foot?

Only for US surveys, deeds and coordinates recorded in survey feet before 2023. The foot of 0.3048 m is used for everything else (85 FR 62698).

How high is a 10-foot ceiling in metres?

10 ft × 0.3048 = 3.048 m.
