Area Converter
Exact area conversions, a length × width helper and fixed Indian land units.
Type an area in plain words — “1200 sq ft to sq m”, “100 gaj to sq ft”, “2.5 acres in hectares” — or use the boxes below.
Exact · m² = ft² × 0.09290304
- Square foot: exactly 0.09290304 m² = 144 in²
- Square metre: the base unit of area
Length × width
Work out the area of a rectangular room or plot. The sides can be in different units (30 ft × 12 m); the area goes into the converter above.

About the Area Converter
Convert areas between square millimetres, centimetres, metres and kilometres, ares and hectares, square inches, feet, yards and miles, acres, and the Indian land units that have one fixed size — the gaj (square yard), the cent or decimal and the guntha. Type in either box and the other updates; every unit is listed in the table underneath with the formula used.
The arithmetic is exact. An acre is exactly 43,560 ft² = 4,046.8564224 m² and a square foot exactly 0.09290304 m², so 1 guntha comes out as exactly 1,089 ft² and 100 gaj as exactly 900 ft².
The Length × width helper works out the area of a room or plot from its sides, even when they are in different units, and every result also shows the side of a square of the same area, to help you picture it.
How to use it
- Type an area in From and pick its unit, then pick the unit you want in To. You can also type in the To box to convert the other way.
- Or type a conversion in Quick convert, such as
1200 sq ft to sq m,100 gaj to sq ftor2.5 acres in hectares, and press Enter. - To start from measurements, fill in Length × width (for example 30 ft × 40 ft). Mixed units such as 30 ft × 12 m are fine; the area is then worked out in square metres.
- Copy the result or a link, download the table of every unit as CSV, or convert a column of areas with Convert a list.
Examples
1200 sq ft to sq m
111.483648 m² exactly
1,200 × 0.09290304 = 111.483648.
100 gaj to sq ft
900 ft² (1 gaj = 1 square yard = 9 ft²)
2.5 acres to ha
1.0117141056 ha exactly
12 ft × 10 ft
120 ft² = 11.1483648 m²
1 guntha to sq ft
1,089 ft² (33 ft × 33 ft; 40 guntha make an acre)
1 acre
≈ 63.61 m (≈ 208.71 ft) per side
Common uses
- Comparing flat and office sizes quoted in sq ft and sq m.
- Plot sizes in gaj (square yards), cents and gunthas from Indian property listings.
- Farm and forest land in acres and hectares.
- Floor, wall and tile areas from room measurements.
- Geography and maps in km² and mi².
Where the conversion factors come from
From NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix C and the BIPM SI Brochure, Table 8:
- Square foot = 0.09290304 m² exactly (0.3048 m squared); square yard = 9 ft² = 0.83612736 m²; square inch = 6.4516 cm².
- Acre = 43,560 ft² = 4,840 yd² = 10 square chains = 4,046.8564224 m² exactly.
- Square mile = 640 acres = 2.589988110336 km².
- Are = 100 m² and hectare = 100 ares = 10,000 m², the metric land units adopted in 1879.
Gaj, cent, decimal and guntha
- Gaj — in plot sizes a gaj means a square gaj, i.e. one square yard: 9 ft² or 0.83612736 m². A 100-gaj plot is 900 ft².
- Cent — 1/100 of an acre, 435.6 ft² (about 40.47 m²), the unit of many south Indian land records. In eastern India the same 1/100-acre unit is called a decimal (dismil).
- Guntha — 1/40 of an acre, 1,089 ft² (a square 33 ft × 33 ft), from the old Bombay revenue survey and still used in Maharashtra, Karnataka and neighbouring states.
Bigha, biswa, katha, kanal, marla and similar units are not included, because their size changes from state to state.
Area from length and width
For a rectangle, area = length × width. With both sides in the same unit, the area is in that unit squared: 30 ft × 40 ft = 1,200 ft². With mixed units each side is converted to metres first: 30 ft × 12 m = 9.144 m × 12 m = 109.728 m². For an L-shaped room, split it into rectangles and add their areas.
Carpet area, built-up area and super built-up area are different measurements of the same flat; check which one a listing quotes before comparing prices.
Limitations
- Land units whose size varies by state or district (bigha, katha, kanal, marla and others) are not included.
- The length × width helper handles rectangles only.
- The “as a square” line uses a square root and is rounded.
- Inputs are limited to 60 characters; very large or very small results are shown in scientific notation.

Frequently asked questions
How many square feet are in a square metre?
About 10.7639. A square metre is exactly 1 ÷ 0.09290304 = 10.76391041… ft², and a square foot is exactly 0.09290304 m².
How many square feet is one gaj?
Nine. In property sizes a gaj is a square yard, 3 ft × 3 ft = 9 ft² (0.83612736 m²), so 200 gaj = 1,800 ft².
How many cents or gunthas make an acre?
An acre is 100 cents (each 435.6 ft²) or 40 gunthas (each 1,089 ft²).
How many acres are in a hectare?
About 2.4711. A hectare is 10,000 m² and an acre is 4,046.8564224 m², so 1 ha = 2.4710538… acres and 1 acre = 0.40468564224 ha exactly.
Why is bigha not in the list?
Because there is no single bigha. Its size depends on the state, and sometimes on the district, so any one figure would be wrong for many readers. Use the area in square feet or square metres from your land record instead.
Can I work out the area of a room in feet and get square metres?
Yes. Enter the length and width under Length × width — for example 12 ft × 10 ft = 120 ft² — and pick m² as the To unit: 11.1483648 m².
