About the SCORM Package Builder (SCORM 1.2 & 2004)
Turn learning material into a package any SCORM learning platform can run: a PDF (each page drawn with pdf.js as a picture, its text kept for screen readers), a video or audio file with optional questions that pause it at chosen moments, slides exported as pictures, a folder or ZIP of web pages (a course you made or an HTML export from another authoring tool), or a quiz from Quiz Maker. The package reports to the platform the way SCORM describes: completion (pages seen or video watched), the score, pass or fail, the time spent, every answer, and where the learner was, so that they can carry on later.
Before you upload anything, the built-in LMS emulator plays the package with its real run-time and lists every call it makes — Initialize, SetValue, Commit, Terminate — with the data a platform would store and any error a platform would return. Close and open it again to check that it resumes. Everything is built in your browser; no file is uploaded.
How to use it
- Choose what the package holds — PDF, video or audio, slides, web pages or a quiz — and add the file, folder or quiz. A PDF’s pages are drawn as pictures on your device, which takes a moment for long documents.
- For a video, add questions at the moments you choose (play to the right moment and press Add a question at the current time), and captions if you have them. For web pages, pick the launch page and how completion is reported.
- Give the course a title, choose SCORM 1.2 (works in almost every platform) or SCORM 2004 4th Edition, and set the completion share and the pass mark.
- Press Build the package, read the checks, then Start a test in the emulator: go through the content and watch the calls and the stored data. Close and open again checks that it resumes.
- Without a pass the free preview builds and tests the package in full. With a Premium pass, or after unlocking this package, download the SCORM ZIP (upload it to your platform without unzipping it) or a website copy, and copy the manifest.
Examples
A 12-page PDF · SCORM 1.2 · complete when 100% of pages are seen
A package with 12 page pictures and their text · lesson_status incomplete → completed when the last unseen page is opened · lesson_location the page number · suspend_data remembers the pages seen
An 8-minute MP4 with questions at 1:30, 4:10 and 7:05 · SCORM 2004 · complete at 90% watched · pass mark 70%
completion_status completed at 90% watched · score.scaled from the three questions · success_status passed or failed · one interaction per answer
A quiz file with 20 questions and a pass mark of 60%, attempts: 2
The package asks the 20 questions one at a time, reports the score and pass or fail, and offers one more attempt
Common uses
- Teachers putting a worksheet, a lecture video or a practice quiz into a school’s learning platform with progress tracking.
- Training and HR teams packaging compliance briefings and induction videos with a pass mark.
- Course creators wrapping an HTML course or an export from another tool, and checking it before upload.
- Anyone who needs to see what a package does in a platform before uploading it.
What the package reports
- SCORM 1.2:
cmi.core.lesson_status(incomplete, then completed, or passed or failed when there is a pass mark),cmi.core.score.raw(0–100),cmi.core.lesson_location,cmi.suspend_data(up to 4,096 characters),cmi.core.session_time,cmi.core.exit(suspend while unfinished) andcmi.interactions. The pass mark goes in the manifest asadlcp:masteryscore. - SCORM 2004 4th Edition:
cmi.completion_status,cmi.success_status,cmi.progress_measure,cmi.score.scaledandraw,cmi.location,cmi.suspend_data(up to 64,000 characters),cmi.session_time,cmi.exitandcmi.interactions. The pass mark goes in the manifest’s primary objective (imsss:minNormalizedMeasure) and the completion share inadlcp:completionThreshold.
The data model and the error codes follow the SCORM run-time references (SCORM run-time reference at scorm.com; ADL publishes SCORM itself). The package finds the platform’s API the usual way: in its own window, then up to 500 parent windows, then the window that opened it.
What is in the ZIP file
imsmanifest.xml at the top (one organisation, one item, one SCO that lists every file), index.html (the launch page), msc-player.js (the player and the SCORM run-time, no outside scripts), msc-player.css, msc-data.js (your content’s settings and questions), the content itself (pages/, slides/, media/ or content/) and a short README. The same files play in any browser when index.html is opened directly, outside a platform; the website copy is that version without the manifest, for a website or a shared drive.
Web pages that already report to a platform
Exports from authoring tools often contain their own SCORM code. The builder looks through their scripts for the SCORM 1.2 API (LMSInitialize) and the 2004 API (API_1484_11) and suggests the matching version; choose The pages report to the platform themselves, and the package is only their files and a new manifest. For pages without SCORM code, the package opens them in a frame and reports completion when they are opened, or after the minutes you set. MySmartCoPilot never runs your own scripts on its page, so the emulator tests the tracking but does not show your pages.
Limitations
- One package is one lesson (one SCO). Courses made of several SCOs with sequencing between them are not built here.
- The ZIP leaves out the XML schema (.xsd) files ADL’s conformance test suite expects at the top of a package; platforms read the manifest without them, but a strict conformance check lists them as missing.
- A PDF becomes pictures of its pages with their text alongside: links, form fields and the PDF’s own layout features do not work inside the package.
- The emulator follows the SCORM data model, but each platform has its own behaviour (how it shows status, when it starts a new attempt). Test the package in your platform before learners use it.
- SCORM 1.2 platforms keep only 4,096 characters of saved progress: very long videos save their watched parts more coarsely, and in a video with very many questions the latest answers may not fit, so those questions are asked again when the learner comes back. SCORM 2004 keeps 64,000 characters.
- Up to 400 PDF pages, 300 slides, 2 GB of video and 5,000 web files. Large packages take a while to zip, and many platforms limit the size of an upload.
Privacy
On this device; its files download once
Your files are read and packaged in your browser and never uploaded or stored. The emulator runs on this page; nothing is sent to a learning platform. Only your choices of SCORM version and page size are remembered in this browser.
Frequently asked questions
What do I get without a pass?
Without a pass, SCORM Package Builder (SCORM 1.2 & 2004) shows the package built and run in the built-in LMS emulator with its call log, its file list and checks, and the first lines of its manifest. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded or copied. A Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.
SCORM 1.2 or SCORM 2004?
SCORM 1.2 is supported by almost every learning platform, so it is the safe choice. SCORM 2004 4th Edition reports completion and pass or fail separately, keeps more saved progress (64,000 characters instead of 4,096) and passes the completion share to the platform. If your platform supports 2004, it gives better reports.
Do I unzip the package before uploading it?
No. Upload the ZIP file as it is: the platform looks for imsmanifest.xml at the top of the ZIP.
What does the LMS emulator test?
It plays the package with the same player and run-time that go into the ZIP and answers its calls as a platform would, with the same rules for each data model element (read-only, write-only, vocabularies, ranges) and the same error codes. The log shows every call and its result, and Close and open again starts a new session that resumes a suspended attempt.
Can I add questions to a video?
Yes: multiple choice with one or more right answers, true or false, short answer, number, or a note to read. The video pauses at each one; you can stop learners skipping ahead and replay the part before a wrong answer. You can also take the questions from an activity file saved in Interactive Video Quiz Maker.
Which quizzes can I use?
A file saved in Quiz Maker, a Quiz Maker link, or questions in GIFT or Aiken format (for example exported from another platform). Formulas written in TeX are turned into MathML for the package.
Are my files uploaded?
No. The PDF is drawn, the package is built and the ZIP is made in your browser. MySmartCoPilot never receives your files.
