About the Photo Print Layout (Photos on A4)

Lay out your photos at their exact size — passport and stamp-size photos, 2 × 2 in, wallet, 3.5 × 5, 4 × 6, 5 × 7 or any size in millimetres or inches — as many as fit on A4, US Letter, A5, A3, Legal or 4 × 6 and 5 × 7 in photo paper. Choose Fill sheets to fill one or more sheets with copies of one photo, or of several photos sharing the sheet, or Set copies to give each photo its own size and number of copies; mixed sizes are packed onto as few sheets as possible.

Each photo is cropped evenly to its box (or shown whole), turned on its side where that fits more on the sheet, and placed with your margins and gaps, with cut lines or corner marks and a size-check line to measure before you cut. The result is a PDF at the paper’s exact size, or a 300-DPI JPG for a photo lab, downloaded with a pass or after unlocking this result. Everything happens in your browser: your photos are never uploaded.

    How to use it

    1. Add your photos: drop them on the box, choose them or paste one (JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC).
    2. Choose Fill sheets and a size to fill one or more sheets with copies, or Set copies to choose the size and the number of copies of each photo.
    3. Choose the paper, the margins, the space between photos and the cut guides. Each photo’s line shows the resolution it will print at.
    4. Check the sheets in the print preview, then Download PDF or Download JPG — with a pass, or after unlocking this result.
    5. When printing, set the scale to Actual size (100 %), measure the size-check line, and cut along the lines.

    Common uses

    • A sheet of passport-size or stamp-size photos for forms, ID cards and applications.
    • Wallet-size and 3.5 × 5 in prints of family photos on A4 or Letter photo paper at home.
    • One 4 × 6 in file of many small photos to order a single print from a photo lab or kiosk.
    • Copies of one photo for school, club or office records, cut out with a paper trimmer.

Print it at its real size

    • Print the PDF with the scale at Actual size or 100 %. Options such as Fit to page or Shrink to fit make the page a little smaller, and every photo with it.
    • Measure the size-check line under the photos: it is exactly 50 mm (2 in when you work in inches) long when the scale is right. Measure before you cut.
    • Borderless printing usually enlarges the page slightly so that the ink reaches the edges: switch it off, or the photos come out a little too big.
    • Keep the margins at least as wide as your printer’s unprinted edge, a few millimetres on most home printers. Photo paper is offered with 3 mm margins, other paper with 5 mm.
    • The JPG is made at 300 pixels per inch with that resolution written into the file: a 4 × 6 in sheet is 1200 × 1800 pixels. At a photo lab, order a print of the same size as the sheet, set to show the whole image rather than crop it.

    Photo sizes

    • Passport size, 35 × 45 mm: the printed passport photo size in the UK (GOV.UK: photos for passports), and the size many other countries ask for. Forms also set the size of the head, the background and more, which a layout does not change, and some set how the print is made: GOV.UK, for one, asks for prints of a professional standard on plain white photo paper, so check your authority’s rules before you send home prints.
    • 2 × 2 in (51 × 51 mm), wallet (2.5 × 3.5 in) and the print sizes 3.5 × 5, 4 × 6, 5 × 7, 6 × 8 and 8 × 10 in, plus A6 and A5.
    • Stamp size has no single standard: 20 × 25 mm is offered, and you can type the size your form asks for.
    • Custom: any width and height from 5 to 600 mm (0.2 to 23.62 in).

For a passport or visa photo framed to an authority’s rules — head size, eye height, background — make it first with the Passport Size Photo Maker, then lay out copies here. The paper sizes are the ISO 216 A sizes (ISO 216) and the US Letter (8.5 × 11 in) and Legal (8.5 × 14 in) sheets.

    How many photos fit

With the margins offered (5 mm on office paper, 3 mm on photo paper), 2 mm between photos and turning on:

    • A4: 31 passport-size photos, 95 stamp-size, 15 of 2 × 2 in, 9 wallets, four 3.5 × 5 in or two 4 × 6 in prints.
    • US Letter: 29 passport-size photos, 15 of 2 × 2 in, 8 wallets or three 4 × 6 in prints.
    • 4 × 6 in photo paper: 8 passport-size photos.

Turning is what makes the room: on A4, four columns of upright passport-size photos leave space for a fifth column turned on its side, and on Letter two upright 4 × 6 in prints leave room for a third, turned, under them. With Auto the paper is used upright or sideways, whichever holds more — and when both hold as many, the way that leaves room for the size-check line.

With Fill sheets, the photos share the sheets: when you add more photos than the sheets hold, the page says how many got no copy and how many sheets give each one.

    Cut guides and sharpness

    • Cut lines run just outside every photo when there is space between them, so cutting on the line leaves no grey edge; photos that touch share one line.
    • Corner marks are short ticks at the corners of every photo, stopped before the next one: for a paper trimmer, or a craft knife and ruler.
    • Each photo’s line shows the resolution it prints at in its box. Files are made at 300 pixels per inch of print; a photo with fewer pixels is enlarged to fill its box, and under 150 pixels per inch the page warns that it may look soft. A 3000 × 4000 pixel phone photo prints a passport-size photo at over 2,000 pixels per inch, far more than needed.

    Limitations

    • Photos are placed as they are: nothing checks head size, background or expression for official photos.
    • Printers leave an unprinted edge of their own; margins smaller than your printer’s can cut off the outer photos.
    • Printed colours depend on the printer, ink and paper, and screens are usually brighter than prints.
    • Up to 50 photos, 500 copies of one photo, 2,000 photos and 60 sheets per layout. Very large paper is saved as a JPG below 300 dpi so the browser can draw it; the PDF keeps every photo at 300 pixels per inch.
    • HEIC/HEIF photos open directly in Safari. Other browsers first download the HEIC decoder (1.4 MB, LGPL-3.0) from this site, once; it then decodes the photo on your device.

    Frequently asked questions

What do I get without a pass?

Without a pass, Photo Print Layout (Photos on A4) shows the first sheets of your layout (up to 3) as page images with a MySmartCoPilot watermark, with the number of photos and sheets. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.

Why do my printed photos come out smaller than they should?

The print dialog is scaling the page. Choose Actual size or 100 % instead of Fit to page or Shrink to fit, and switch off borderless printing. The size-check line under the photos measures exactly 50 mm (2 in) when the scale is right.

How many passport-size photos fit on an A4 sheet?

With 5 mm margins and 2 mm gaps, 31: four columns of six upright photos and a fifth column of seven turned on their side. With Turn sizes to fit more off you get a 5 × 6 grid of 30. Smaller margins or gaps may fit more, as long as your printer prints that close to the edge.

Can I put different photos and sizes on one sheet?

Yes. With Set copies, give each photo its own size and number of copies; they are packed onto as few sheets as possible, turned where that helps. With Fill sheets, several photos share the sheets equally — or choose A sheet for each photo.

Why are some photos turned on their side?

Turning some of them fits more on a sheet: 31 passport-size photos on A4 instead of 30, three 4 × 6 in prints on US Letter instead of two. Once cut out, a turned photo is the same as any other. Switch off Turn sizes to fit more for a plain grid.

Should I use the PDF or the JPG?

Print at home from the PDF: its pages are exactly the paper’s size, so at 100 % every photo has its exact size. Use the JPG for a photo lab or kiosk that takes image files: it is made at 300 pixels per inch, with that resolution written into the file. Both download with a pass, or after unlocking this result.

    Are my photos uploaded?

No. Your photos are opened, laid out and turned into the PDF or JPG by your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent to a server.
