About the PDF to EPUB Converter

A PDF keeps every line where it was printed, so on a phone or an e-reader you zoom and scroll sideways. This tool rebuilds a text PDF as an EPUB 3 e-book that reflows to any screen and any text size: lines are joined back into paragraphs (words hyphenated at line ends are put back together), headings, lists and tables are recognised, pictures are kept, and running headers, footers and page numbers are left out.

Chapters come from the PDF’s bookmarks when it has them, otherwise from its headings, and the e-book gets a table of contents, the title, author and language you confirm, and a cover made from page 1. The original page numbers are kept as invisible page markers, so readers that support them can show and go to “page 37” of the PDF. Everything happens on your device; the PDF is never uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Press Choose a PDF (or drop it on the box). A password-protected PDF asks for its password.
  2. Check the Title, Author and Language (filled in from the PDF where it has them), choose the Pages and where Chapters come from, and press Make EPUB.
  3. Look at the chapters it found and the free preview of the first pages, and change the details if you like (the book is remade straight away). With a pass, or once this book is unlocked, press Download EPUB and open the file in your e-reader app — or check it first in the EPUB Reader.

Examples

A report with bookmarks
Input
A 40-page PDF report whose bookmarks list its six sections; a running header and page numbers on every page
Result
An EPUB with one chapter per section, a contents list matching the bookmarks, the charts as pictures, and no repeated headers or page numbers in the text.
A novel exported as PDF
Input
A PDF manuscript with chapter headings in a bigger font, no bookmarks
Result
Chapters cut at the headings, paragraphs that reflow on a phone, and the first page as the cover.

Common uses

  • Reading a long PDF — a report, a thesis, a manual, a public-domain book — comfortably on a phone, Kobo or other e-reader.
  • Sending a document to an e-reader app that handles EPUB much better than PDF.
  • Making large-print reading easier: an EPUB’s text can be made as big as you need without scrolling sideways.
  • Turning your own PDF manuscript into a first e-book draft to check on real devices.

How the PDF is rebuilt

A PDF stores positioned pieces of text, not paragraphs. The text is read with its fonts and positions; lines are grouped into paragraphs by their spacing and indentation, and a hyphen at the end of a line is removed when the two halves make a word (an English word list helps decide). Headings are recognised by their larger or bolder type, lists by their bullets and numbers, tables by their ruling and column alignment, and lines that repeat at the top or bottom of the pages — running headers, footers, page numbers — are dropped. Bold, italic, superscripts and web links are kept.

Chapters follow the PDF’s bookmarks (its outline) when it has at least two: each chapter starts at the heading the bookmark points to. Without bookmarks, the book is cut at its main headings. The result is written as EPUB 3 (W3C EPUB 3.3) with a navigation document, and an NCX contents file for older readers — the format Apple Books, Google Play Books, Kobo, Thorium and Calibre read.

What works best

Books, reports, papers and manuals with real text in one or two columns convert well. Scanned PDFs have no text to reflow: their pages are kept as pictures, so run them through PDF OCR first. Pages that are mostly layout — brochures, forms, slides, complex magazines — are better kept as PDFs. Mathematical formulas come out as plain text and may lose their layout.

Limitations

  • Scanned pages (without a text layer) are kept as pictures, not text — run PDF OCR first.
  • Formulas, footnote placement and complex layouts (sidebars, text in boxes, multi-column magazines) are approximated; check the result.
  • Fonts aren’t copied: the e-reader’s own fonts are used, so text in rare scripts needs a reader with fonts for it.
  • Forms, annotations, videos and attachments of the PDF don’t carry over.
  • Very long PDFs take a while: every page is read on your device.

Frequently asked questions

What do I get without a pass?

Without a pass, PDF to EPUB Converter shows the first pages of the e-book (up to 2) as watermarked page images, with its contents and a summary of the whole book. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. The PDF is read, rebuilt and packed as an EPUB in your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent to MySmartCoPilot or anyone else.

Will it work on Kindle?

Kindle apps and devices accept EPUB files sent through Amazon’s Send to Kindle, which converts them. Other e-readers (Kobo, PocketBook, Apple Books, Google Play Books) open EPUB directly.

Why are some lines missing?

Lines that repeat at the top or bottom of many pages — running headers, footers, page numbers — are removed on purpose. If the PDF repeats something you want to keep, turn off Remove running headers, footers and page numbers and make the EPUB again.

Where do the chapters come from?

From the PDF’s bookmarks when it has at least two, otherwise from its headings. You can switch between bookmarks, headings and one single chapter; the contents list shown before you download is the one the e-book will have.

Can I turn the EPUB back into a PDF?

Yes — EPUB to PDF lays an e-book out on pages of the size you choose.
