About the KM to Miles Converter

Convert kilometres to miles and miles to kilometres — type in either box and the other updates. A mile is exactly 1.609344 km (5,280 feet of 0.3048 m), so miles = km ÷ 1.609344 (about km × 0.62137) and km = miles × 1.609344. The conversion is exact: 60 miles is exactly 96.56064 km.

Under the result you also get nautical miles (1 nautical mile = 1.852 km exactly), feet or metres for short distances, and the race name when the distance is a standard road race. Printable tables list the World Athletics road-race distances from the road mile to 100 km — 5 km = 3.11 mi, the half marathon (21.0975 km) = 13.11 mi, the marathon (42.195 km) = 26.22 mi — and kilometres and miles from 1 to 1,000 for road trips.

How to use it

  1. Type a distance in Kilometres or Miles; the other box updates as you type. A unit after the number also works (5 mi, 800 m, 1 nmi), and so do race names such as 5K, 10k and half marathon.
  2. Pick a race under Examples, or open the Races table, for 5K, 10K, half-marathon and marathon distances in both units.
  3. Read nautical miles and, for short distances, feet or metres under the result.
  4. Copy the result or a link, or print, copy or download the race, km and mile tables.

Examples

A 5K race
Input
5 km
Result
3.11 mi

5 ÷ 1.609344 = 3.10686 mi.

The marathon
Input
42.195 km
Result
26.22 mi

42.195 ÷ 1.609344 = 26.21876 mi — 26 miles 385 yards.

The half marathon
Input
21.0975 km
Result
13.11 mi

Half of the marathon distance.

A road distance
Input
100 km
Result
62.14 mi

100 ÷ 1.609344 = 62.137 mi.

Miles to kilometres
Input
60 mi
Result
96.56064 km (exact)

60 × 1.609344.

A nautical mile
Input
1 nmi
Result
1.852 km = 1.15078 mi

The nautical mile is exactly 1,852 m.

Common uses

  • Road-trip and flight distances, and car odometers in the other unit.
  • Running and cycling: 5K, 10K, half-marathon and marathon distances in miles.
  • Travel between countries that sign roads in kilometres and in miles.
  • Sea and air distances in nautical miles.
  • A printable km-to-miles chart for a car, a running club or a classroom.

The formula

NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix C gives 1 mile = 5,280 ft = 1,609.344 m exactly (pp. C-5 and C-9) and 1,852 m = 1 international nautical mile (p. C-5).

  • miles = km ÷ 1.609344 (about km × 0.621371) — 100 km = 62.14 mi
  • km = miles × 1.609344 — 60 mi = 96.56064 km
  • nautical miles = km ÷ 1.852

In your head: multiply kilometres by 6 and divide by 10 (100 km → 60 mi, 3.4 % low), or remember that 5 miles is about 8 km (0.6 % off).

Race distances

World Athletics Technical Rule 55.1 lists the standard road-race distances: the road mile (1,609.344 m), 5 km, 10 km, 15 km, 10 miles, 20 km, the half marathon, 25 km, 30 km, the marathon (42.195 km), 50 km and 100 km (Book of Rules, C2.1 Technical Rules). The half marathon is half the marathon, 21.0975 km.

In miles: 5K = 3.11, 10K = 6.21, 15K = 9.32, half marathon = 13.11, marathon = 26.22 (26 miles 385 yards), 50K = 31.07 and 100K = 62.14.

Miles and nautical miles

The mile in this converter is the statute (land) mile of 5,280 feet. The nautical mile is a separate unit of exactly 1,852 m — about 1.15 statute miles. The BIPM SI Brochure (Table 8) notes that the nautical mile and the knot (one nautical mile per hour) are used in marine and aerial navigation, and that there is no internationally agreed symbol for either; nmi and NM are both common. To convert a speed, use the Speed Converter rather than this page.

Limitations

  • The conversion is exact; only the display is rounded (10 significant figures, or choose a Precision).
  • Mile means the statute mile of 1,609.344 m. Nautical miles are shown separately; the US survey mile (about 3.2 mm longer, deprecated since 2023) is not used.
  • This page converts distances. For speeds such as km/h and mph use the Speed Converter; for paces use the Running Pace Calculator.
  • Road and race distances measured on the ground can differ from map distances; the converter changes units only.
