Type in either box. kmph, kph, knots (30 kn) and m/s after a number work too, and fractions such as 62 1/2.

Examples
60 mph = 96.56064 km/h

Exact · km/h = mph × 1.609344 · 1 mph = 1.609344 km/h

  • Knots: ≈ 52.13857451 kn

The outer scale is in mph and the inner one in km/h, as on a dual-scale speedometer, so one needle reads both. It follows the speed above.

Table

Speed limits signed in mph (UK and US)

mph km/h Where it applies
20 32.19UK: the default limit on roads with street lights in Wales; 20 mph zones and limits elsewhere
30 48.28UK: the default limit on roads with street lights in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland
50 80.47UK: cars towing a caravan or trailer, buses, coaches and most goods vehicles on single carriageways (40 mph for goods vehicles over 7.5 t in Scotland)
60 96.56UK: cars and motorcycles on single carriageways; towing, buses and most goods vehicles on dual carriageways; towing on motorways
65 104.61US: the maximum on rural interstates in some states (each state sets its own)
70 112.65UK: cars and motorcycles on dual carriageways and motorways; US: a common rural-interstate maximum
75 120.70US: the rural-interstate maximum in many states
80 128.75US: some rural interstates in a handful of states
85 136.79US: the highest posted limit, on some Texas highways

Examples of where each limit applies, from GOV.UK, the IIHS table of US state limits, the European Commission and India’s notification S.O. 1522(E) (sources below the tool). Limits depend on the vehicle and the road and can be set lower locally: the signs on the road are what count.

About the MPH to km/h Converter

Convert miles per hour to kilometres per hour (also written kmph or kph) and back — type in either box and the other updates. A mile is exactly 1,609.344 m, so 1 mph = 1.609344 km/h exactly: 60 mph is exactly 96.56064 km/h, and km/h ÷ 1.609344 gives mph (100 km/h = 62.14 mph).

Under the result you also get knots, metres per second and, for walking, running and cycling speeds, the pace per mile and per km — handy for a treadmill set in mph. Printable tables list speed limits signed in mph (UK and US) and in km/h (India, the EU and most other countries) with examples of where each applies, and mph and km/h charts from 5 to 300. A dual-scale speedometer shows both scales on one needle.

How to use it

  1. Type a speed in Miles per hour or Kilometres per hour; the other box updates as you type. A unit after the number also works: 100 kmph, 80 kph, 30 kn or 10 m/s.
  2. Pick a common speed under Examples, or open the Limits in mph and Limits in km/h tables for speed-limit values in both units.
  3. Read knots, m/s and (from 1 to 30 mph) the pace under the result, and watch the needle on the Dual-scale speedometer.
  4. Copy the result or a link, or print, copy or download any of the tables as CSV.

Common uses

  • Driving abroad: speed limits and speedometers in the other unit.
  • Treadmills and bike computers set in mph, and running paces per km.
  • Comparing car, bike and train top speeds quoted in mph and km/h.
  • Wind and boat speeds in knots next to mph and km/h.
  • A printable mph-to-km/h chart for a car, a classroom or a driving lesson.

The formula

NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C defines the mile as 5,280 ft = 1,609.344 m exactly and the nautical mile as 1,852 m. So:

  • km/h = mph × 1.609344 — 50 mph = 80.4672 km/h
  • mph = km/h ÷ 1.609344 (about km/h × 0.621371) — 80 km/h = 49.71 mph
  • m/s = mph × 0.44704 exactly, and m/s = km/h ÷ 3.6
  • knots = km/h ÷ 1.852

In your head: multiply mph by 1.6 (0.6 % low), or multiply km/h by 5 and divide by 8 (0.6 % high). Multiplying km/h by 0.6 is quicker but 3.4 % low.

Speed limits in mph and km/h

Limits are set by each country — and in the US by each state — for each kind of road and vehicle, so the tables give examples rather than a full list:

  • UK: for cars and motorcycles, 30 mph on roads with street lights (20 mph in Wales), 60 mph on single carriageways and 70 mph on dual carriageways and motorways; lower for towing, buses and goods vehicles (GOV.UK: Speed limits).
  • US: each state sets its own limits; rural interstate maximums run from 60 to 80 mph, and some Texas highways are posted at 85 mph (IIHS table of state speed limits).
  • EU: the national governments set the limits, mostly 50 km/h in towns, 80 or 90 km/h on rural roads and 120 or 130 km/h on motorways; Germany has no general motorway limit but recommends 130 km/h (European Commission, Road Safety).
  • India: the central maximums in notification S.O. 1522(E) under section 112 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 are, for cars, 120 km/h on access-controlled expressways, 100 km/h on four-lane divided roads and 70 km/h elsewhere; states and cities may set lower limits on particular roads.

The signs on the road always take precedence.

Knots, metres per second and pace

A knot is one nautical mile per hour: 1.852 km/h or about 1.151 mph. Aircraft, ships and weather reports use it. Metres per second is the SI unit: 1 m/s = 3.6 km/h ≈ 2.237 mph.

For walking, running and cycling, the pace is the time per mile or per km: minutes per mile = 60 ÷ mph. A treadmill at 6 mph is a 10:00-per-mile pace, or 6:13 per km.

Dual-scale speedometers

Some speedometers carry two scales around one needle, mph and km/h. The one on this page shows mph outside and km/h inside, from 0 to 160 mph (257.5 km/h), so you can read a speed in both at a glance. A car’s speedometer works the speed out from how fast the wheels or the gearbox turn, so tyres of a different size change what it shows — the Tire Size Calculator works out by how much.

Limitations

  • The conversion is exact; only the display is rounded (10 significant figures, or choose a Precision).
  • Mile means the international statute mile of 1,609.344 m. Knots use the nautical mile of 1,852 m.
  • The speed-limit tables are examples to help you read signs in the other unit, not a complete or legal reference: limits differ by vehicle and road, change over time and are signed locally.
  • The pace line appears from 1 to 30 mph, the range of walking, running and cycling.

Frequently asked questions

How many km/h is 60 mph?

96.56 km/h — exactly 96.56064, because 1 mph is exactly 1.609344 km/h.

How many mph is 100 km/h?

62.14 mph (100 ÷ 1.609344 = 62.137). 120 km/h is 74.56 mph and 80 km/h is 49.71 mph.

How do I convert mph to km/h in my head?

Multiply by 1.6 — or by 8 and divide by 5: 50 mph ≈ 80 km/h (exactly 80.47). For km/h to mph, multiply by 5 and divide by 8: 100 km/h ≈ 62.5 mph (exactly 62.14).

Are kph, kmph and km/h the same?

Yes. All three mean kilometres per hour; km/h is the form the SI uses, and kph and kmph are everyday spellings.

What is 70 mph in km/h?

112.65 km/h (exactly 112.65408). It is the national limit for cars and motorcycles on UK motorways and dual carriageways.

How fast is a knot in mph and km/h?

One knot is 1.852 km/h exactly, or about 1.151 mph. 30 knots is 55.56 km/h, about 34.5 mph.
