How to measure your foot
- Put a sheet of paper on a hard floor against a wall and stand on it, heel touching the wall, with your weight on that foot.
- Mark the tip of your longest toe (not always the big toe) with a pencil held upright, or ask someone to do it.
- Measure from the wall edge to the mark in millimetres. Do both feet and use the longer one.
- Measure late in the day, wearing the socks you will wear with the shoes. Choose Foot length above and type the number.
About the Shoe Size Converter
Convert a shoe size between UK & India, US men’s, women’s, children’s and youth, EU (Paris point), Mondopoint, Japan, China and Korea — or measure your foot and get every size at once. Type the size the way it is written, such as UK 8, US women 7.5, US 10C, EU 42 or 26.5 cm, and the table shows each system with its unrounded value.
Every system is tied to the length of the foot, following the conversion rules of ISO 19407, the international standard for converting shoe sizes. Many brands’ own charts compare the length of the shoe last instead and land half a size away, so the table shows that value too wherever it differs — and a printable chart for adults and children lists half sizes with the foot length in millimetres.
How to use it
- Pick the size system and type the size (half sizes such as 8.5, 8½ or 8 1/2 work), or type the system with it:
UK 8,US men 10,EU 42,UK kids 10. - No size to start from? Measure your foot (see How to measure your foot), choose Foot length and type it in cm, mm or inches.
- Read the headline sizes and the table. The Unrounded column shows the exact conversion; the last column shows what shoe-last charts give when they differ.
- Open Conversion rules to switch between ISO 19407 and shoe-last charts, set the toe allowance, choose the US women’s scale or round up for a roomier fit.
- Find your row in the Shoe size chart (it is highlighted), and copy, download or print it.
Examples
UK 8
US men’s 9 · US women’s 10½ · EU 41½ (42 on shoe-last charts) · Japan 26
ISO 19407: foot = 25.4/3 × (8 + 23) = 262.5 mm; EU = 3 × 262.5 / 20 + 2 = 41.4.
Foot length 25 cm
UK 6½ · US men’s 7½ · US women’s 9 · EU 39½ · Japan 25
EU 42
UK 8½ (8 on shoe-last charts) · US men’s 9½ · US women’s 11
US women 7.5
UK 5 · US men’s 6 · EU 37½ (38 on shoe-last charts)
Foot length 16 cm
UK children’s 9 · US 9½C · EU 26
Common uses
- Buying shoes online from a shop that lists sizes in another system — US trainers in India, EU sizes in the UK, Japanese sizes from an Asian brand.
- Choosing a first size for a child from a measured foot length, with the children’s chart for UK, US and EU sizes.
- Checking what women’s and men’s sizes of a unisex shoe correspond to.
- Printing a size chart for a shop counter, a school or a sports club.
The formulas
ISO 19407 builds every system from the foot length L in millimetres and adds an allowance of two sizes for the shoe last:
- EU (Paris point, ⅔ cm): EU = 3*L*/20 + 2, so L = 20/3 × (EU − 2)
- UK & India (barleycorn, ⅓ inch): UK = 3*L*/25.4 − 23, so L = 25.4/3 × (UK + 23); UK children’s sizes are 13 more (children’s 13½ is followed by adult 1)
- US men’s = UK + 1; US women’s = men’s + 1½ on the common scale, or men’s + 1 on the FIA (Footwear Industries of America) scale; US children’s (C) and youth (Y) = UK + ½, the usual convention
- Mondopoint, Japan, China and Korea mark the foot length itself: 265 mm, 26.5 cm
The shoe-last basis compares last lengths instead: last = foot + toe allowance (15 mm by default), EU = last ÷ (20/3), UK = last ÷ (25.4/3) − 25. Results are rounded to the nearest half size (or up, if you choose).
Why charts disagree by half a size
There has never been one exact conversion. Each system grew up separately: EU sizes count Paris points of the last, UK and US sizes count barleycorns from different starting points, and East Asian systems use the foot itself. ISO 19407 itself calls its tables a guideline for consumers.
Two things move a conversion by half a size or more: whether you compare feet (ISO 19407) or lasts (most brand charts), and how much toe room a maker allows — typically 13 to 17 mm. That is why UK 8 is EU 41½ by ISO 19407 but EU 42 on many shoe boxes. When a brand publishes a chart with foot lengths, trust it over any general converter.
Size systems at a glance
- UK & India: shoes sold in India are labelled in UK sizes. Adult sizes start at 1, children’s sizes run 0 to 13½.
- US & Canada: men’s, women’s, children’s (0C–13½C, toddler and little kids) and youth or big kids (1Y–7Y).
- EU: the Paris point (⅔ cm) scale used across continental Europe, the same for adults and children.
- Mondopoint: foot length in mm (ISO 9407), common for ski boots, military and safety footwear.
- Japan, China, Korea: foot length in cm (Japan) or mm (China, Korea; China’s standard is GB/T 43293), in 5 mm steps.
How to measure your foot
Stand on a sheet of paper against a wall with your heel touching it, mark the tip of your longest toe and measure from the wall to the mark in millimetres. Measure both feet and use the longer one, late in the day and in the socks you will wear. Then choose Foot length and type the number — the converter gives every size, and tells you when your foot falls between two sizes.
Limitations
- A guide, not a guarantee: makers’ lasts differ, so the same foot can need different sizes in different brands. Use a brand’s own chart when it has one, and try shoes on.
- Width is not converted (US letter widths, Mondopoint width or Japanese girth letters such as 2E).
- Some brands use EU third sizes (40, 40⅔, 41⅓); they are accepted but results are given in half sizes.
- Sports and specialist footwear (ski boots, climbing and cycling shoes) often follow the maker’s own Mondopoint or EU chart.

Frequently asked questions
What is UK 8 in EU size?
By ISO 19407 it is EU 41½ (the exact value is 41.4). Many brand charts, which compare shoe lasts, say EU 42 — the converter shows both.
Is the Indian shoe size the same as the UK size?
Yes. Shoes sold in India are labelled in UK sizes, so UK 8 and India 8 are the same. Choose UK & India in the list.
How do I convert US men’s sizes to women’s?
Add 1½: US men’s 8 is about US women’s 9½. Some makers use the FIA scale and add 1 instead — pick it under Conversion rules.
What shoe size is a 26 cm foot?
About UK 7½ to 8, EU 41, US men’s 8½ and Japan 26 by ISO 19407 — it sits between two UK half sizes, so try both or choose the larger one.
What is Mondopoint?
The foot length in millimetres (ISO 9407), for example 265 for a 26.5 cm foot. It is used for ski boots, military and safety footwear, and it is the basis of the Japanese, Chinese and Korean systems.
What do the C and Y in US kids’ sizes mean?
C marks children’s sizes (toddlers and little kids, 0C to 13½C); Y marks youth or big kids’ sizes (1Y to 7Y), which follow 13½C.
