The formula

The inch has been exactly 2.54 cm since the international yard and pound agreement of 1959; NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix C lists “1 inch (in) = 2.54 centimeters (exactly)” and “1 foot (ft) = 12 inches (exactly)”.

For a quick estimate in your head, multiply centimetres by 4 and divide by 10: 10 cm ≈ 4 in, about 1.6 % too high.

Fractions of an inch

Tape measures and rulers in inches are marked in halves, quarters, eighths and sixteenths, and fine rulers in 32nds. The converter rounds the inches to the nearest mark you choose and reduces the fraction (8/16 becomes 1/2). It then says how far that mark is from the exact length: 10 cm is 3.937 in, and the nearest 1/16 inch mark, 3 15/16 in, is 0.013 mm longer. In the drawing the blue line is the exact length and the thick mark is the nearest fraction.

Feet and inches

For lengths of 12 inches or more the result also comes as feet and inches: 180 cm = 70.87 in = 5 ft 10.87 in, or 5 ft 10 7/8 in to the nearest 1/16 inch.
