About the KDP Low-Content Interior Maker
Build the whole inside of a low-content book — the journals, planners, logbooks and notebooks sold on Amazon KDP — or of a puzzle book, from sections you put in order: a title page, a “This book belongs to” page, lined, dot grid, graph and blank pages, a journal with your own prompts, dated or undated daily, weekly and monthly planners, habit trackers, logbooks with the columns you name, recipe and sketch pages, and word search and sudoku puzzles with their answers at the end of each section. Planner dates are written in your language from the first day of your week (Monday, Sunday or Saturday), and a planner that runs into the next year carries on without a gap.
The pages follow KDP’s paperback rules for the trim size you choose: the inside (gutter) margin KDP asks for at your page count, outside margins of at least 0.25 in (0.375 in with bleed), lines of at least 0.75 pt and letters of at least 7 pt, page numbers in the outer corners with even numbers on left-hand pages, an even page count and embedded fonts. The page view draws every page as the PDF holds it, with the trim and margins marked, and the page gives the spine width for your cover. With a Pro pass, or once this interior is unlocked, the PDF is yours to download; the free preview shows its first pages, watermarked.
How to use it
- Start from a ready-made book — lined notebook, guided journal, dated planner, daily planner, habit tracker, logbook, recipe book, sketchbook, graph or dot grid paper, word search or sudoku book — or build your own from sections.
- Under Book, choose the trim size and paper you will pick on KDP, bleed or no bleed, the margins and page numbers, and type the title and author for the title page.
- Under Sections, add the pages in the order they appear and set each one: how many pages, the line spacing, a planner’s first month and length, the habits, a logbook’s columns, the journal prompts (one per line) or the puzzles’ words and difficulty. Move, copy or remove a section with its buttons.
- Leaf through the page view: every page is drawn as it will be in the PDF, with the trim and margins shown. The checks under it list anything KDP would refuse — too few or too many pages, too many blank pages in a row, letters the font cannot print.
- Press Make the PDF. With a Pro pass, or once this interior is unlocked, the PDF downloads from the button that appears; upload it to KDP as the paperback manuscript and use the spine width shown for the cover. Without a pass the free preview shows the first pages of the PDF, watermarked, with the page count and spine width.
Examples
6 × 9 in, white paper, week starting on Monday, language Français; sections: title page, 12 month pages from January, a page a week for the same 12 months, 10 lined pages for notes
About 75 pages: month grids with French month and day names that start on Monday, a page for every week (the first one starting in the last days of December), and KDP’s 0.375 in gutter for 24 to 150 pages.
8.5 × 11 in, 20 word lists of 12 to 15 words, each with a “# Title” line; medium (across, down and diagonally)

6 × 9 in, a title page, a “This book belongs to” page and 100 log pages with the columns Date, Odometer start, Odometer end, Miles, Purpose and 22 rows a page
102 pages with a shaded heading row on every page and page numbers in the outer corners.
Common uses
- Publishing journals, planners, notebooks and logbooks on Amazon KDP without buying interior templates.
- Making puzzle books — word searches on any theme, sudokus from easy to expert — with answer pages.
- A planner in your own language, with the week starting on the day you use.
- Teachers, clubs and small businesses making their own record books, reading logs or recipe collections.
KDP’s rules the pages follow
- Inside (gutter) margin by page count: 24–150 pages 0.375 in, 151–300 pages 0.5 in, 301–500 pages 0.625 in, 501–700 pages 0.75 in, 701–828 pages 0.875 in; the extra inside margin you set is added on top. Outside, top and bottom margins at least 0.25 in, or 0.375 in with bleed; with bleed every page is 0.125 in wider on its outside edge and 0.25 in taller (Set Trim Size, Bleed, and Margins).
- Page counts from 24 up to KDP’s limit for the trim size and paper (the same table: 828 pages for most trim sizes on white paper, 590 for 8.5 × 11 in); an odd count is made even with one blank page at the end.
- Lines at least 0.75 pt, letters at least 7 pt, shading of at least 10% grey, pictures of at least 300 DPI and every font embedded (Paperback Submission Guidelines).
- Page numbers in order, even numbers on left-hand pages, and no more than 4 blank pages in a row at the start or in the middle of the book, or 10 at the end (Fix Paperback and Hardcover Formatting Issues). A page with a page number is not blank, so long runs of blank pages are fine with page numbers on.
KDP updates its rules from time to time: check its current help pages and the print previewer before you publish.
Low-content books on KDP
KDP calls a book low-content when its pages are repetitive and made to be filled in: notebooks, planners, diaries and journals, prompt journals and log books. For those, tick Low-content under Categories when you set the paperback up; an ISBN is then optional, though a book without one gets no sample to read on its store page, and KDP places a barcode in a 2 × 1.2 in white box at the bottom right of the back cover, so keep that area clear. Puzzle books and colouring books are not usually low-content books: publish them as regular paperbacks with an ISBN (Low-Content Books, What is an ISBN and Imprint?).
The puzzles
- Word searches come from the engine of the Word Search Maker: every word is placed once, and no word appears a second time by accident. Easy hides words across and down, medium adds diagonals, and hard adds every backwards direction and fills the grid with letters from the words themselves. Each list of words makes one puzzle; a first line such as “# Animals” gives it a title. Grids are up to 22 × 22 letters, so the letters print at 7 pt or more.
- Sudokus come from the generator of the Sudoku Solver: each one has exactly one solution and needs the techniques of its level and no harder — singles for easy, pointing pairs and pairs for medium, triples, X-Wings and XY-Wings for hard, and quads, Swordfish, XYZ-Wings and Jellyfish for expert — so it can be solved without guessing.
- The puzzles are made for your book from their own seeds: the same settings always give the same puzzles, so the answer pages always match them, and changing the words or the level makes new ones.
Planner dates in your language
Month, weekday and date names come from your browser’s own language data for the language you choose (28 languages, from English, Spanish and German to Greek, Russian and Ukrainian), and the week starts on Monday, Sunday or Saturday. Daily planners give each day its own page, weekly planners a page from the first day of each week that holds a day of your months, monthly planners and habit trackers a page a month; undated planners leave the date line empty to fill in. The printed words — Notes, To do, Top priorities and the rest — are yours to change under Printed words, so the whole book can be in your language.
Limitations
- MySmartCoPilot is not affiliated with or endorsed by Amazon.
- The built-in font is Noto Sans (SIL Open Font License) with Latin, Greek and Cyrillic letters, Vietnamese included; Arabic, Hebrew, Hindi, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai and other scripts can’t be printed yet, and the checks name every letter it lacks.
- Pages are black and greys only. On black-ink paper the title page’s picture goes into the PDF in greys, as the page view shows it; on colour paper it keeps its colours.
- One picture, on the book’s title page. Colouring books and pages of pictures are not made here.
- Large books — a year of dated daily pages, or hundreds of hard sudokus — take a minute or more to make, longer on a phone; the page view stays usable meanwhile.
- The PDF is the interior only: make the cover with the Book Cover Maker or size it with the Book Cover Size Calculator using the spine width shown here.

Frequently asked questions
What do I get without a pass?
Without a pass, KDP Low-Content Interior Maker shows the first pages of the interior PDF (up to 3) as watermarked page images, with its page count, spine width and checks. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.
Will KDP accept the PDF?
It is laid out to KDP’s paperback rules: the page size of your trim (with or without bleed), KDP’s gutter for your page count and its minimum outside margins, lines of 0.75 pt or more, letters of 7 pt or more, embedded fonts and an even page count. KDP still reviews every book, so open the PDF in KDP’s print previewer and order a proof copy before you publish.
Do I need an ISBN?
Not for a low-content book such as a notebook, planner, journal or logbook: KDP lets you publish those without one when you tick Low-content. Low-content books cannot use KDP’s own ISBN, and one published without an ISBN gets no sample to read on its store page; with an ISBN of your own it can. Puzzle books are not usually low-content books on KDP, so publish them with an ISBN — KDP offers one at no charge for regular paperbacks, and the ISBN Barcode Generator draws the barcode for your own.
What spine width should my cover use?
The page shows it for your page count and paper (KDP’s white paper is 0.002252 in a page, cream 0.0025 in). Use it in the Book Cover Maker or the Book Cover Size Calculator, with the same trim size and page count.
Are the puzzles different in every book?
Each section’s puzzles have their own seeds, made from the section, the puzzle number and its words: the same book always gives the same puzzles (so the answers match after every change elsewhere), and another word list, level or section order gives new ones.
Can I sell books made with it?
Yes. The page layouts are this tool’s own, the font’s licence (SIL Open Font License) allows it to be embedded in books you sell, and the prompts, word lists, puzzles and words you type are yours to publish. Check that any picture you add is yours to use.
Are my words uploaded?
No. The pages and the PDF are made in your browser on your device; only the font files come from this site. Your sections and settings are kept in this browser for your next visit; your picture is not kept.
