About the Book Cover & Spine Width Calculator

A paperback cover is one image that wraps around the book: back cover, spine and front cover side by side, plus bleed on the outside edges that is trimmed off. This calculator works out the spine width from the page count and paper, the full cover size in inches, millimetres and pixels at 300 DPI, and where the safe areas, spine folds and barcode go.

For Amazon KDP it uses KDP’s own published figures: 0.002252 in per page on white paper, 0.0025 in on cream, 0.00235 in on groundwood, 0.002252 in for standard colour and 0.002347 in for premium colour, with 0.125 in of bleed. For other printers, enter the paper thickness they give (per page, or pages per inch) and their bleed. Download the template as a 300 DPI PNG or a vector PDF to use as a guide layer in Canva, Photoshop, Affinity or InDesign.

How to use it

  1. Choose Amazon KDP or Other printer.
  2. For KDP pick the trim size and the ink and paper; for another printer enter the trim size, the paper thickness (per page or pages per inch) and the bleed they ask for.
  3. Enter the page count of your interior (every page, including blank ones).
  4. Read the spine width and full cover size, and check the spine-text note.
  5. Download the PNG (300 DPI) or PDF template, place it on a layer above your artwork, design inside the green safe areas, keep the barcode area clear, then hide the template before you export the final PDF.

Examples

6 × 9 in novel, 300 pages, white paper (KDP)
Input
Trim 6 × 9 in · 300 pages · black & white ink on white paper
Result
Spine 300 × 0.002252 = 0.6756 in (17.16 mm) · full cover 0.125 + 6 + 0.6756 + 6 + 0.125 = 12.926 × 9.25 in · 3878 × 2775 px at 300 DPI
5 × 8 in poetry book, 64 pages, cream paper (KDP)
Input
Trim 5 × 8 in · 64 pages · cream paper
Result
Spine 0.16 in (4.06 mm) · full cover 10.41 × 8.25 in · no spine text (79 pages or fewer)
Another printer that quotes pages per inch
Input
Trim 6 × 9 in · 320 pages · 444 PPI · bleed 0.125 in
Result
Spine 320 ÷ 444 = 0.721 in (18.31 mm) · full cover 12.971 × 9.25 in

Common uses

  • Setting up a paperback cover for Amazon KDP before designing it.
  • Checking how much the spine grows when the page count changes after editing.
  • Briefing a cover designer with the exact canvas size in pixels at 300 DPI.
  • Laying out covers for other print-on-demand services or local printers from their paper thickness.

The formulas

Amazon KDP gives these in its help page Create a Paperback Cover:

  • Spine width = page count × paper thickness (white 0.002252 in, cream 0.0025 in, premium colour 0.002347 in, standard colour 0.002252 in; groundwood 0.00235 in from KDP’s Paperback Submission Guidelines).
  • Cover width = bleed + back cover width + spine width + front cover width + bleed.
  • Cover height = bleed + trim height + bleed, with 0.125 in (3.2 mm) of bleed.

For printers that publish pages per inch (PPI), spine width = page count ÷ PPI.

Safe areas, spine text and the barcode

  • Text and logos on the front and back belong at least 0.125 in inside the trim lines; the template’s green safe areas also keep 0.125 in from the spine folds, which KDP says can move by 0.0625 in either way.
  • Spine text needs 0.0625 in of space from each edge of the spine. KDP prints spine text only on books with more than 79 pages (its cover page also says “at least 79”; Cover Creator needs 80), so the tool flags 79 pages as borderline.
  • Barcode: KDP adds a barcode to the back cover if your file has none, and rejects covers with images or text where it goes. The template marks a 2 × 1.2 in area at the bottom of the back cover beside the spine, 0.25 in from the spine and the bottom trim (KDP barcodes).
  • Before uploading: KDP asks for one PDF with the back, spine and front together, fonts embedded, images at 300 DPI or more, and no crop marks or template text — so hide the template layer before exporting.

KDP trim sizes and page counts

KDP lists 16 paperback trim sizes, from 5 × 8 in to 8.5 × 11 in and A4 (8.27 × 11.69 in). Most allow 24–828 pages on white paper, 24–776 on cream and 24–812 on groundwood; standard colour needs 72–600 pages. The 8.25 in and 8.5 in wide sizes and A4 allow fewer pages, and A4 is not offered in standard colour. The tool checks your page count against KDP’s table (Set Trim Size, Bleed, and Margins). Sizes wider than 6.12 in or taller than 9 in count as large trim and have different printing costs.

Limitations

  • Paperbacks only. KDP hardcover covers have wrap and hinge areas measured differently — use KDP’s own cover calculator for hardcovers.
  • Spine widths for other printers are only as accurate as the paper thickness you enter; ask the printer for their figure or template for your exact paper.
  • The template is a guide, not a print file: it is RGB, has labels and guides, and must not be uploaded as your cover.
  • On iPhone and iPad very large covers can exceed the size of image Safari can draw; the PDF template has no such limit.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate the spine width for KDP?

Multiply the page count by KDP’s thickness for your paper: 0.002252 in per page for white paper or standard colour, 0.0025 in for cream, 0.00235 in for groundwood and 0.002347 in for premium colour. A 300-page book on white paper has a 0.6756 in (17.16 mm) spine.

What size should my KDP cover file be?

Width = 0.125 in + trim width + spine + trim width + 0.125 in; height = trim height + 0.25 in. For a 6 × 9 in, 300-page book on white paper that is 12.926 × 9.25 in — 3878 × 2775 pixels at 300 DPI.

Can I put text on the spine?

On KDP, only when the book has more than 79 pages. Keep the text 0.0625 in away from both spine edges; on thin spines that leaves very little height, so use a short title.

Does the page count include blank pages?

Yes. Count every page of the interior, including blank pages and front matter: each one is paper that adds to the thickness of the spine.

Can I upload the template as my cover?

No. Use it as a guide layer and hide it before exporting: KDP asks you to remove crop marks and template text, and the template is not a finished design.

Is anything uploaded?

No. The calculation and both templates are made in your browser.
