A block of tags at the end goes; a tag or mention inside a sentence keeps its word.
About the Hashtag Counter & Checker
Paste a caption or a post to count its hashtags, @mentions, links and emoji, and check them against the platform you post on: Instagram’s 5 hashtags and 20 mentions, Threads’ one topic tag of up to 50 characters, X’s recommended 2, YouTube’s 60 and Bluesky’s 64-character tags.
The checker also finds what a platform would not take as you meant it: a hashtag used twice (in any mix of capitals), a space after #, a tag of digits only, a tag that stops at punctuation (#rock&roll is only #rock on Instagram and X) and tags after the opening characters you want to check before a “… more” cut. Then copy the tags as a sorted list without repeats, or take every hashtag or mention out of the caption. Nothing you paste leaves your browser.
How to use it
- Paste your caption or post.
- Choose the platform you post on to check its rules, and set how many opening characters to check before a “… more” cut.
- Read the checks, then the list of tags with how often each is used and what is wrong with it.
- Copy the hashtags or mentions as a sorted list without repeats, or switch to Without hashtags to copy the caption with them taken out.
Examples
Sunset at the beach 🌅 #Sunset #beach #sunset #Travel
4 hashtags, 3 different: #Sunset is used twice (also as #sunset). 4 of 5 for Instagram.
Love # summer and #2024 vibes #rock&roll
# summer: a space after # #2024: only digits #rock&roll: stops at “&”, so only #rock is a hashtag (Instagram)
I love #coffee and #tea #morning #weekend
I love coffee and tea
The block of tags at the end goes; a tag inside a sentence keeps its word.
Common uses
- Bringing an old caption with 30 hashtags down to Instagram’s 5.
- Finding tags that will not link because of a space, an apostrophe or a dash.
- Copying the hashtags of a caption into a list without repeats for a scheduler.
- Taking the hashtags out of a caption to post it on LinkedIn or a blog.
The rules checked
- Instagram: up to 5 hashtags on a post or reel, and a comment will not post if the post would then have more than 5 (Use hashtags on Instagram); up to 20 @mentions in a caption (Instagram Platform reference).
- Threads: one topic tag per post, 1–50 characters, without periods or ampersands (Threads API — Posts).
- X: no more than 2 hashtags per post is X’s recommendation; more are allowed (How to use hashtags).
- YouTube: up to 3 hashtags from the description appear by the title, and with more than 60 YouTube ignores all of a video’s hashtags (YouTube Help).
- Bluesky: no limit on how many, but a tag longer than 64 characters is not turned into a tag (app.bsky.feed.post lexicon).
- TikTok, LinkedIn, Facebook and Mastodon publish no hashtag limit, so only the counts and the tags that will not work are shown.
What counts as a hashtag here
A # followed by letters (in any script), digits and underscores, with at least one letter, not inside a word (C# and & are not tags) and not inside a web address (example.com/#about). On X, Instagram and most platforms a tag ends at the first space or punctuation mark, which is why #self-care is only #self and #don’t is only #don there. Two platforms read more of it, and the checker follows each when you choose it:
- Threads ends an in-text tag only at a space or at . & @ ! ? , ; or : (Threads API — Posts), so #self-care is one tag there and #rock&roll is #rock;
- Bluesky reads a tag up to the next space and drops punctuation at its end, and only after a space or at the start of a line (Bluesky’s rich-text code), so #rock&roll is one tag there.
Hashtags count as the same tag whatever their capitals: #Coffee and #coffee are one tag used twice.
The “… more” cut
Long captions fold behind “… more” after a couple of lines. Where depends on the app, the screen and the line breaks, and platforms do not publish it, so set the number of opening characters you want to check: the tags after them are marked, because they sit where people see them only after opening the caption.
Limitations
- Mentions are found in username form (letters, digits, dots and underscores), as Instagram, X and Threads write them.
- Whether a platform shows a post under a hashtag is its own decision; the checker only compares the tags with the published rules.
- Emoji are counted as you see them: a flag, a family or a skin tone is one emoji.

Frequently asked questions
How many hashtags can I use on Instagram?
Up to 5 on a post or reel, according to Instagram’s Help Centre, and a comment does not get around it: it will not post if the post would then have more than 5.
Why is #self-care only #self?
On X, Instagram and most platforms a hashtag ends at the first character that is not a letter, a digit or an underscore. Write #selfcare or #self_care to keep it one tag everywhere; Threads and Bluesky keep the hyphen in the tag.
Do #Coffee and #coffee count as two hashtags?
They are the same tag, so using both is a repeat. The checker counts every use towards a platform’s limit and shows repeats so you can remove them.
Can I remove all hashtags from a caption?
Yes: choose Without hashtags. The block of tags at the end goes, and a tag inside a sentence keeps its word without the #, so the sentence still reads.
Is my caption uploaded?
No. Counting and checking happen in your browser, and the page works offline once it has loaded.
