About the Green Screen Video Editor (Chroma Key)
Remove a green or blue backdrop from your own footage with a GPU chroma keyer. Pick the actual key colour from a frame, optionally add a second colour for uneven lighting, and adjust tolerance, edge softness, spill suppression, edge shrink and light wrap. Replace the backdrop with a colour, image, blurred copy or local video; move and scale the subject and draw a garbage matte to hide lights and stands. The split preview compares original and keyed footage. With a Pro pass, export H.264/AAC MP4 up to 4K with the original soundtrack, transparent WebM where supported, or PNG frame sequences. The free preview plays the first half, up to ten seconds, with a moving watermark.
How to use it
- Choose your local green- or blue-screen clip and set the output size.
- Pick the key colour from the original frame. Enable a second colour for uneven lighting, then adjust tolerance, softness, spill, edge shrink and light wrap.
- Choose a colour, image, blurred copy or background video. For a video, choose its trim range and whether it loops; position and scale the subject.
- Draw at least three matte points or type their x,y percentages, then Apply matte. Use the split slider to inspect edges and hair.
- Encode the marked preview. With a Pro pass, export the full MP4, transparent WebM or PNG frames, or save a long MP4 directly to disk where supported.
Colour distance and soft edges
The keyer uses the nonlinear RGB luma and colour-difference coefficients from ITU-R BT.709 to measure chroma distance in browser-decoded SDR RGB. Tolerance chooses the removed colours, softness creates partial alpha, shrink takes a neighbourhood minimum, and spill suppression reduces the key-colour excess. This is a classic chroma keyer, not a subject-recognition or background-removal model.
Timing and audio
Decoded frames are processed incrementally with their presentation timestamps and durations; phone rotation metadata is handled by the local decoder. MP4 retains your soundtrack by encoding it as AAC. PNG sequences include actual frame timestamps in a manifest and may be split into several archives to respect the ZIP format.
Limitations
- Footage without a green or blue backdrop needs a different background-removal method; this tool does not recognise people or objects.
- WebGL2 and a supported decoder are required. Encoding availability varies by browser and resolution; there is no universal software H.264 fallback.
- Transparent WebM requires a supported alpha encoder. PNG sequences provide the transparency fallback.
- Browser decoding may convert HDR or wide-gamut footage; this keyer operates on decoded SDR RGB and is not a colour-grading reference.
- Long clips use incremental frame processing, but buffered video downloads and PNG archives still need memory. Direct MP4 saving avoids retaining the whole encoded output where supported.

Frequently asked questions
What do I get without a pass?
Without a pass, Green Screen Video Editor (Chroma Key) shows the first half of the result (up to 10 seconds) at the settings you chose, with a MySmartCoPilot watermark. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded or saved to your device. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.
Can I remove a blue screen?
Yes. Pick its colour from the original frame. The spill control follows the dominant channel of the chosen key colour.
How do I keep hair and motion-blurred edges?
Increase softness gradually, use the second key colour for uneven lighting, and inspect the split preview. Excessive tolerance or shrink can erase fine details.
What does the free preview show?
The first half of your keyed result, up to ten seconds, at the selected output settings with a moving watermark. Complete video and PNG-frame exports need a Pro pass.
Does it keep my audio?
MP4 keeps the original soundtrack as AAC, without using the replacement video’s audio. Unsupported input audio is reported rather than silently dropped.
