About the Video Filters & Colour Correction

Fix a video that came out too dark, flat or off-colour, or give it a look — black and white, sepia, vintage, warm or cool — and watch the change on your own footage in a split before-and-after view while you move the sliders.

You can set brightness, contrast, gamma (midtones), fade, saturation, temperature and tint, add sharpening, a soft blur or a vignette, and load a .cube LUT made in a colour-grading app. Brighten dark footage measures six frames of your video and suggests a brightness and gamma for it. Every frame is filtered in your browser and encoded again; the sound is copied unchanged and nothing is uploaded.

Without a pass, the result is a free preview: its first half, up to 10 seconds, with a MySmartCoPilot watermark.

How to use it

  1. Drop a video on the box or click Choose a video.
  2. Pick a starting look (Vivid, Warm, Black & white, Vintage …) or press Brighten dark footage, then fine-tune the sliders. Drag the divider on the picture, or use the Before | after slider, to compare, and move Position to check other moments of the video.
  3. Optionally load a .cube LUT, choose whether it comes before or after the adjustments and how strong it is, then pick the output size and quality.
  4. Press Apply the filters. With a pass, or after unlocking this result, Download the filtered video. Without a pass the page plays a free preview instead — the first half of the result, up to 10 seconds, with a MySmartCoPilot watermark — and Ways to unlock shows how to get the full file.

Examples

An evening video that came out dark
Input
party.mp4 · 1920×1080 · mostly dark: mean brightness about 15 %, the brightest pixels about 50 %
Result
Brighten dark footage → Brightness +94, Gamma 1.4 · party-filtered.mp4, sound copied

The suggestion is a starting point: lower the brightness if lamps or windows turn white.

A black-and-white version for a montage
Input
interview.mov · Black & white preset (contrast +10)
Result
interview-filtered.mov in greyscale, using the Rec. 709 luma weights of the W3C grayscale() filter
A creative LUT from a grading app
Input
travel.mp4 · teal-orange.cube (33-point 3D LUT) after the adjustments at 70 %
Result
travel-filtered.mp4 with the LUT’s look blended at 70 % over the corrected picture

How each adjustment works

The colour steps follow the filter functions of the W3C Filter Effects Module Level 1 and, like them, work on the stored sRGB values:

  • Brightness multiplies every channel: c′ = a·c, with a = 1 + slider/100.
  • Contrast pivots around mid grey: c′ = a·c + 0.5 − 0.5a.
  • Gamma changes the midtones only: c′ = c^(1/γ), so γ above 1 lifts the shadows and keeps black and white where they are.
  • Fade lifts black up to 30 % grey, the matte look of faded film.
  • Saturation, Black & white and Sepia are the saturate(), grayscale() and sepia() colour matrices of the specification.
  • Temperature raises red and lowers blue (or the reverse) by up to 20 %, and Tint moves green against magenta, scaled so a grey keeps its brightness.
  • Blur is a Gaussian blur made of three box blurs, as the specification describes for feGaussianBlur; Sharpen is an unsharp mask. Both scale with the picture, so the preview on the page looks like the full-size result.

The steps always run in this order: LUT (when set to come first), brightness, contrast, gamma, fade, temperature and tint, saturation and the black-and-white or sepia look, LUT (when set to come after), vignette, sharpening, blur.

Using a .cube LUT

A LUT (look-up table) maps every colour to a new one. Many cameras record a flat log picture and come with a LUT that turns it into normal colour: load that LUT with Before the adjustments, then correct brightness and colour on top. A creative LUT (a film look, teal and orange) is usually meant for normal footage: put it After the adjustments and lower its strength if it is too heavy.

The page reads the common .cube text format: LUT_3D_SIZE tables (red changing fastest, then green, then blue) of 2 to 129 points per axis, LUT_1D_SIZE curves, DOMAIN_MIN and DOMAIN_MAX, and # comments.

Tips for a good result

  • Fix brightness and contrast before colour: a picture that is too dark looks muddy whatever its colour.
  • Watch the bright parts of the frame when you raise brightness; once they turn white the detail there is gone.
  • Sharpening also sharpens noise, so keep it low on dark or grainy footage.
  • Choose 720p for a quicker result: every frame is filtered in this browser, and fewer pixels take less time.

Limitations

  • Every frame is decoded, filtered and encoded again in this browser, so a long or 4K video takes a while, and on a phone it is usually slower than real time.
  • Needs WebCodecs (current Chrome, Edge, Safari or desktop Firefox) and a decoder for the video’s codec; HEVC needs a hardware decoder in the browser.
  • The adjustments apply to the whole picture and the whole video: there are no masks or keyframes. To blur only part of the picture, use Blur Part of a Video.
  • Temperature is a red-and-blue balance shift, not a calibrated Kelvin white balance.
  • HDR video is converted to standard dynamic range when it is re-encoded, and subtitle tracks and chapters are not carried over. Only the main video track is kept.

Frequently asked questions

What do I get without a pass?

Without a pass, Video Filters & Colour Correction shows the first half of the result (up to 10 seconds) at the settings you chose, with a MySmartCoPilot watermark. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded or saved to your device. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.

Do I need a pass?

To download or save the whole filtered video, yes: a Pro pass unlocks every Pro tool. Without a pass you see a free preview of your own video: its first half, up to 10 seconds, at the size and quality you chose with a MySmartCoPilot watermark, played on the page. An unlock of this one result (Ways to unlock lists how) makes the whole video from the file still open on the page.

How does Brighten dark footage decide?

It measures the brightness of six frames spread over the video. If the picture is dark (an average below 40 %), it raises brightness until the brightest half per cent of the pixels is close to white, at most doubling it, and then sets a gamma that lifts the average towards 42 %. It is a fixed rule, not AI, and you can change both values afterwards.

Which LUT files work?

.cube files with a 3D table of 2 to 129 points per axis (17, 33 and 65 are usual) or a 1D curve. A LUT made for log footage belongs before the adjustments, a creative look usually after them.

Why is the new file a different size from the original?

Because the picture is encoded again at the quality you choose. High is close to the original for most phone videos; Smaller file saves space; a smaller output size saves more.

Does the sound change?

No. The sound is copied packet for packet, so it stays exactly as it was. Only when the container cannot hold the original sound codec is it converted.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The video is read, filtered and encoded inside your browser, and the result is saved to your device.
