About the Rotate & Flip Video

Turn a video that plays sideways or upside down the right way round, rotate a landscape clip into portrait, or mirror it (left–right or top–bottom), with a live preview of the result.

For a plain rotation of an MP4 or MOV file the tool works in seconds and without any quality loss: the video data is copied unchanged and only the file’s rotation setting — the display matrix in the track header, which phones also use for portrait videos — is changed. Current browsers honour it, as do most players. For apps that ignore that setting, and for mirroring, choose Burn in: the picture is re-encoded the right way up and the audio is copied untouched. Everything happens in your browser; the video is never uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Drop a video on the box or click Choose a video. A preview appears.
  2. Press Rotate left, Rotate right, 180°, Mirror ↔ or Mirror ↕ until the preview looks right (Reset starts again).
  3. Keep Instant — change the rotation setting for a lossless rotation, or pick Burn in (needed for mirroring and for players that ignore the setting) and a quality.
  4. Press the button under What will happen, check the result in the player, then Download it.

Examples

A phone video that plays sideways
Input
VID_2026.mp4 · 1920×1080 · Rotate right · Instant
Result
VID_2026-rotated.mp4 · shown as 1080×1920 · video copied unchanged, rotation setting 90°
A clip for an editor that ignores rotation
Input
IMG_0420.MOV · rotation setting 90° · no change · Burn in
Result
IMG_0420-rotated.mov with the picture stored upright (rotation setting 0°), so every app shows it the same way
Un-mirror a selfie video
Input
selfie.mp4 · Mirror ↔ · Burn in · High quality
Result
selfie-mirrored.mp4 with text and logos reading the right way; the audio is copied

Instant rotation or burn in?

Phones record video in the sensor’s orientation and store a rotation setting that tells players how to turn it. The instant mode only changes that setting (in MP4 and MOV files it is the display matrix of the track header, defined in ISO/IEC 14496-12), so the result has exactly the original quality and is ready in seconds. Current browsers follow it, as do most players.

Some older players, TVs and editing apps ignore the setting and show the stored, unturned picture. Burn in decodes every frame, turns it and encodes it again, so the picture itself is upright and the rotation setting is 0°. It takes longer and, like any re-encode, loses a little quality; the sound is copied unchanged.

Why mirroring always re-encodes

A mirror can also be written into the display matrix, but players do not agree on it: in our tests with current Chromium, Firefox and WebKit, Chromium showed a stored mirror correctly, Firefox ignored it and WebKit mirrored on the wrong axis. So the tool mirrors by re-encoding the picture, which looks the same everywhere.

MKV and WebM files

Matroska (MKV) and WebM files have no rotation setting that players honour. For an instant rotation the video is copied into an MP4 file instead (possible for H.264, HEVC, VP9 and AV1 video); with Burn in the file stays MKV or WebM.

Limitations

  • Rotations are in steps of 90°; straightening a slightly tilted horizon (for example 3°) is not possible here.
  • Burn in needs WebCodecs (current Chrome, Edge, Safari or desktop Firefox) and a decoder for the video’s codec; HEVC needs a hardware decoder in the browser.
  • Burn in converts HDR video to standard dynamic range.
  • Subtitle tracks and chapters are not carried over.
  • Large files are held in memory until you download the result, unless you use “Save straight to a file” (Chrome or Edge on a computer).

Frequently asked questions

Does rotating a video reduce its quality?

Not with the instant mode: the video is copied bit for bit and only the rotation setting changes. Burn in re-encodes the picture, which loses a little detail; High quality is the default.

Why does my video still look sideways in one app?

That app ignores the rotation setting. Open the original again, choose the same rotation with Burn in, and the picture itself will be turned, so every app shows it the same way. If the video only has a rotation setting and you want it baked in, choose Burn in without any extra rotation.

Can I rotate an iPhone video?

Yes. iPhone MOV files (H.264 or HEVC) can be rotated instantly and stay MOV. Burning in HEVC needs a browser that can decode HEVC, such as Safari on a Mac, iPhone or iPad.

What is the difference between Mirror ↔ and Rotate 180°?

Mirror ↔ swaps left and right, so text reads backwards; Rotate 180° turns the picture upside down. Mirror ↕ swaps top and bottom without swapping left and right.

Is my video uploaded?

No. The file is processed inside your browser and the result is saved straight to your device.
