About the Compress Image to KB

Choose the size your form allows — 10 KB, 20 KB, 50 KB, 100 KB, 200 KB, 1 MB or any other — and add your photos. Each one is saved at the highest quality whose file is at or under that size; when even a low quality is too big, the picture is made smaller in pixels until it fits. JPG files are written with MozJPEG, Mozilla’s JPEG encoder, which is built for small files and gives the same result in every browser.

Everything happens in your browser, so private photos and signatures are never uploaded. Below the tool: the sizes that Indian exam, admission and ID forms ask for, with links to their official rules, the pixel sizes that fit, and what to do when a form counts a kilobyte as 1,024 bytes.

How to use it

  1. Tap the size your form allows, or Other to type one (for example 30, or 1.5 MB).
  2. Add photos: drop them on the box, choose them, or paste a screenshot. Up to 100 at a time; iPhone photos (HEIC) work too.
  3. Check each result: its size in KB, the quality used and any change in pixels. Use the eye button to compare it with the original.
  4. Download each file — with a pass, or after unlocking that result — or Download them all as a ZIP with a pass. Change the size and the files are made again.

Examples

An exam photo under 50 KB
Input
480 × 600 px portrait JPG · 50 KB
Result
The same 480 × 600 px photo at the highest quality whose file is at most 50,000 bytes.

If the form also gives exact pixels (IBPS: 200 × 230), use the Photo & Signature Resizer, which sets both.

A phone photo under 20 KB
Input
4032 × 3024 px phone photo · 20 KB
Result
A smaller picture (a few hundred pixels across) at a quality of 40 or more, at most 20,000 bytes.

Untick Make the picture smaller in pixels to keep the pixel size; the quality then goes as low as it must.

A screenshot kept as PNG
Input
PNG screenshot · Save as: Same format · 200 KB
Result
A PNG at most 200,000 bytes: lossless when it fits, otherwise with fewer colours.

Common uses

  • Exam and recruitment forms: IBPS, SBI, SSC, UPSC, NEET, JEE, CUET and GATE photos and signatures.
  • Admission, scholarship, visa and ID applications that refuse files above a size.
  • Email and chat attachments that must stay small.
  • Many photos at once: each one under the same limit, downloaded as one ZIP with a pass.

Pixel sizes that fit

How big a JPG is depends on its pixels and on how much detail they hold. These are MozJPEG sizes measured on portrait photos:

  • 150 × 200 px (Kerala PSC): about 7–11 KB at quality 85, 13–22 KB at 95.
  • 200 × 230 px (IBPS and SBI): about 9–14 KB at quality 85, 17–30 KB at 95.
  • 413 × 531 px, a 3.5 × 4.5 cm passport-size photo at 300 DPI: about 17–29 KB at quality 75, 25–46 KB at 85 and 51–98 KB at 95.
  • At quality 85, a passport-shaped portrait stays under 20 KB up to about 230 × 296 to 340 × 437 px, depending on the photo.

A busy background or a noisy, dark photo needs more bytes for the same pixels; a plain light background needs fewer. The tool measures your own photo, so its result is what counts.

1 KB: 1,000 or 1,024 bytes?

Forms differ: some count a kilobyte as 1,000 bytes, others (and Windows) as 1,024. This tool counts 1 KB as 1,000 bytes for the limit, so a file made for “under 20 KB” is at most 20,000 bytes — also under 20 KB for a form that counts 20 × 1,024 = 20,480 bytes. Each result shows its exact size.

A minimum works the other way round: a form that asks for “at least 20 KB” is safe from 20,480 bytes up. If your photo comes out below a form’s minimum, Increase Image Size in KB raises the file size without changing the picture, and the Photo & Signature Resizer keeps exam files inside both limits at once.

Pages for the most-asked sizes

The four sizes people look for most have pages of their own, each with the forms that use that limit: Compress Image to 20KB · Compress Image to 50KB · Compress Image to 100KB · Compress Image to 200KB. For a PDF instead of a photo, use Compress PDF to Size.

How this compares

  • Runs on your device: your browser compresses the photos itself, so they are never uploaded.
  • See it before you pay: the free preview shows each compressed photo with a MySmartCoPilot watermark. Files you download with a pass, or after unlocking one, carry only your photo: nothing of ours is added.
  • You don’t need an account: no sign-up, no email address and nothing to install.

Limitations

  • Up to 100 images at a time, 50 megapixels and 200 MB each.
  • A very small limit (under about 5 KB) leaves room only for a tiny picture.
  • Animated GIF and WebP files keep only their first frame. Transparent areas become white in JPG.
  • Only the form decides what it accepts: check your notification for its pixel size, background and other rules.

Privacy

Photos are processed in your browser and never uploaded. The files you download contain no camera details, dates or GPS location.

Frequently asked questions

What do I get without a pass?

Without a pass, Compress Image to KB shows each photo under your limit at preview size (up to 640 pixels) with a MySmartCoPilot watermark and its real size; in a batch, the first photos (up to 3). Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.

How do I compress a photo to 20 KB?

Tap 20 KB and add the photo. The tool tries qualities from 92 down and keeps the highest one whose file is at most 20,000 bytes; if even quality 40 is too big, it makes the picture smaller in pixels until it fits. The result is usually a few hundred pixels across, which is what forms that ask for 20 KB expect.

Will my photo look worse?

Only as much as the limit needs. The tool keeps the highest quality that fits and never goes below quality 40 while it may reduce the pixels instead, because lower qualities show visible blocks. Use the eye button to compare the result with your original at 100%.

Is 20 KB counted as 20,000 or 20,480 bytes?

Forms differ, so the file is made at most 20,000 bytes: under 20 KB either way. For a minimum (“at least 20 KB”) a file needs 20,480 bytes to pass either way.

My form asks for both a pixel size and a KB range. Which tool do I use?

The Photo & Signature Resizer has the rules of IBPS, SBI, SSC, UPSC, RRB, NTA (NEET, JEE, CUET), GATE, PAN and Kerala PSC built in and makes the exact pixels, DPI and KB range in one step. For any other form, set the pixels with the Image Resizer, which also takes a KB limit.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. Compression runs entirely in your browser, and the page keeps working without an internet connection once it has loaded.
