About the Background Remover

Cut the subject out of a photo and put it on a transparent, white or coloured background, on another picture, or in front of a blurred version of the original. Pick whether a person or an object (a product, a pet, a plant) should stay, and an AI model finds it: MODNet for people and U²-Net for objects. Touch up what it missed with Erase and Restore, or tap a whole object to keep or remove it.

Everything runs in your browser — the models run on your device and the photo is never uploaded. Save the result as a PNG or WebP with transparency, or a JPG, at the photo’s full size (up to 16 megapixels on a computer, 8 on a phone) or cropped round the subject.

How to use it

  1. Choose, drop or paste a photo (JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC).
  2. Choose Person or people or Object, product or pet, then select Remove background. The first time, the AI engine and the model are downloaded from this site.
  3. Check the edges: zoom in, then use Erase (paint away leftover background) and Restore (paint back missing parts). Tap to keep / Tap to remove select a whole object at once. Shrink or grow removes a coloured fringe; Soften feathers the edge.
  4. Choose the background — Transparent, Colour (white for product photos), Image or Blur — then pick a format and Download. Tick Crop to the subject for a tight cut-out such as a sticker or product shot.

Common uses

  • White-background product photos for online stores and marketplaces.
  • Profile pictures and headshots with a clean or blurred background.
  • Transparent PNG cut-outs for presentations, posters and stickers.
  • Putting people or objects on a different background for invitations and social posts.

Which model to choose

  • Person or people uses MODNet, a portrait-matting model (Ke et al., AAAI 2022). It handles hair and shoulders well and works best on photos of one or a few people.
  • Object, product or pet uses U²-Netp, the compact version of U²-Net (Qin et al.), which finds the most prominent object in the picture.
  • If the result keeps the wrong thing, select Try the other model, or tap the subject with Tap to keep (MediaPipe’s MagicTouch interactive segmentation).

All three models are open source under the Apache 2.0 licence and run on your device. Follow fine edges refines the model’s edge along the photo’s own detail (a colour guided filter), which keeps strands of hair and fur; turn it off for a smoother outline.

Getting a clean cut-out

  • Start from a sharp photo where the subject stands out from the background in colour or brightness.
  • Zoom in on the edges. Use a soft brush (low edge hardness) for hair and a hard one for products.
  • A light or dark halo round the subject usually means the edge includes a little background: Shrink by 1–2 px.
  • For product photos on white, check shadows and reflections under the object: erase them or keep them, as the marketplace’s rules require.

Formats and sizes

PNG keeps transparency with no loss. WebP keeps transparency in a much smaller file. JPG has no transparency: a transparent background is saved as white. The picture is edited and saved at full size up to about 16 megapixels on a computer and 8 megapixels on a phone or tablet; larger photos are scaled to that size, and the tool says so.

Limitations

  • The models can miss parts of the subject or keep bits of background — check the edges and touch them up.
  • Very fine detail (wispy hair, fur against a busy background), glass, smoke and transparent objects are hard to cut out cleanly.
  • One photo at a time; very large photos are scaled to 16 MP (8 MP on phones).
  • The first cut-out downloads about 19–27 MB; later ones use the cached copy.
  • Edits are kept only while the page is open.

Privacy

Your photo is processed in your browser and never sent to a server. The first cut-out downloads the AI engine and a model from MySmartCoPilot — not from a third party — about 27 MB for people or 19 MB for objects (Tap to keep adds about 18 MB); after that your browser’s cache serves them. Saved images contain no EXIF data from the original, such as the camera or GPS location.

Frequently asked questions

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The AI models run in your browser, so the photo and the result stay on your device. Only the models are downloaded from MySmartCoPilot, once.

How do I get a white background for a product photo?

Choose Object, product or pet, select Remove background, then under Background choose Colour and the white swatch. Save as JPG (or PNG) and tick Crop to the subject if you want it trimmed.

Part of the subject was removed. How do I get it back?

Choose Restore and paint over that part, or Tap to keep and tap it. Zoom in for precision; Undo (Ctrl+Z) reverses any step.

Why is there a thin halo around the cut-out?

The edge includes a few pixels of the old background. Move Shrink or grow to −1 or −2 px, and try Soften at 1 px for a smoother edge.

Can I keep the background but blur it?

Yes. Choose Blur as the background: the original background is blurred while the subject stays sharp, like a phone’s portrait mode.

Which format keeps the transparent background?

PNG and WebP. JPG cannot store transparency, so a transparent background becomes white.
