JPG to PNG Converter

Turn JPG photos into lossless PNG files — in batches, right in your browser.

PNG is lossless, so files of photos are larger than the JPG. Converting does not add transparency.

About the JPG to PNG Converter

Convert JPG (JPEG) images to PNG without uploading them. Each photo is decoded in your browser — turned the right way up if the camera stored a rotation — and saved as a lossless PNG with exactly the same pixels.

PNG files are written with an optimising encoder that picks the most compact layout (palette, greyscale or RGB) and the best compression filter for every row, so they are noticeably smaller than a standard browser-saved PNG while staying pixel-identical.

How to use it

  1. Drop JPG files onto the box, click Choose images, or paste with Ctrl/⌘ + V.
  2. Each file is converted straight away; the list shows the new size.
  3. Use the eye button to compare, then download files one by one or Download all as a ZIP.

Examples

A photo you are going to edit several times
Input
holiday.jpg · 4032 × 3024
Result
holiday.png · 4032 × 3024, lossless — saving it again after edits does not add new compression artefacts.
A JPG required as PNG by a website or app
Input
signature.jpg
Result
signature.png with identical pixels.

Common uses

  • Editing photos repeatedly without the extra quality loss each JPG save adds.
  • Uploading to sites, apps or print services that accept only PNG.
  • Preparing screenshots or scans saved as JPG for documentation where PNG is the standard.
  • Getting a lossless copy to work on in design tools.

Why is the PNG bigger than the JPG?

JPG is a lossy format: it throws away detail you are unlikely to notice, which makes photos small. PNG is lossless: it stores every pixel exactly. A 4000 × 3000 photo is 36 million bytes of raw colour data; PNG compresses that, but photos contain so much fine detail and noise that the PNG is usually several times larger than the JPG.

For photos that you only want to share, keep the JPG (or make it smaller with the Image Compressor, or convert it to WebP). PNG is worth it for editing, for graphics and for places that require it.

Does converting improve the quality?

No. The PNG contains exactly what the JPG contained, including any compression artefacts. What PNG does guarantee is that no further quality is lost from this point on, however many times you edit and save it.

Converting does not create transparency either: a JPG has no alpha channel, so the PNG is fully opaque. To remove a background you need an image editor.

Limitations

  • Images up to 50 megapixels and 200 MB each, up to 100 per batch.
  • Photo metadata (EXIF: camera, date, GPS location) is not copied to the PNG.
  • Colours are converted to sRGB; CMYK JPGs from print workflows are converted by the browser and may shift slightly in colour.
  • An incomplete JPG (for example a download that did not finish) is converted as far as its data goes and marked in the list: part of that picture will be blank or blurry, so get the file again.

Frequently asked questions

Is the conversion lossless?

Yes — from the JPG to the PNG nothing is lost: every pixel the browser decodes from the JPG is stored exactly in the PNG. (The JPG itself was already lossy when it was created.)

Are my photos uploaded?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser, and once the page has loaded it works offline too.

Can I make the background transparent?

Not with a format conversion — JPG files have no transparency information, so the PNG is opaque. You would need to remove the background in an image editor.

How do I convert PNG back to JPG?

Use the PNG to JPG converter. It lets you choose the quality and the colour for any transparent areas.
