About the Travel Insurance Policy Comparison
Two travel policies with the same headline cover can pay very differently. What decides a claim sits in the policy schedule and the wording: the medical sum insured and the deductible taken off each claim, whether evacuation and repatriation are paid, the co-payment and sub-limits that apply to older travellers, what happens with a pre-existing condition, cancellation, delays, baggage and passport cover, where in the world it applies, the longest trip and the oldest age it takes, and the exclusions.
Open two to four documents (PDFs with a text layer, Word files, text or web pages saved from the insurer’s site) or paste their text, and the comparison reads each one and lines up the terms that decide a claim side by side, with the page and the line every value came from and a plain-language note on what it means. A brochure with several plans in columns is read in the column of the plan you choose. Where values can be compared it marks the one more in your favour; it never ranks policies by price. Tell it about your trip (a Schengen visa, the USA, the oldest traveller, sports, a pre-existing condition, what you could lose if you cancel) and each policy is checked against it. Your documents are read on your device and never uploaded. Without a pass you see a free preview of your own comparison: how many terms were found and how many differ, with the first rows of each table, while the rest, the PDF report, the CSV and Copy summary unlock with a Pro pass. This is a reading aid, not advice: the wording decides.
How to use it
- Choose two to four documents: each policy’s schedule or benefit table and, if you have it, its wording, as a PDF with a text layer, a Word file or a text file. You can also paste the text of a policy. Press Try two sample policies to see two made-up policies compared first.
- Give each policy a short name for its column. When a document lists several plans in columns (Silver, Gold, Platinum), choose the plan you hold or are looking at.
- Under Your trip, tick what applies: a Schengen visa, the USA or Canada, adventure sports, a pre-existing condition; add the oldest traveller’s age, the trip’s length and its prepaid cost.
- Read the comparison term by term: each value comes with the page and the line it was read from. More in your favour marks the better value; Only terms that differ hides the rest. If a value is wrong or missing, press Correct and type what the document says.
- Check the trip checks, the exclusions and the sub-limits, then download the PDF report or the CSV, or copy the summary, with a pass or after unlocking this comparison.
Examples
Sample Voyager Silver (a schedule with a deductible column and senior sub-limits) and Sample GlobeCare Plus (Silver, Gold and Platinum in columns), both made up
Medical expenses USD 100,000 vs USD 250,000 · deductible USD 100 in both · pre-existing conditions: life-threatening emergencies only, up to USD 1,500, vs excluded · worldwide except the USA and Canada vs including them · 13 vs 9 exclusions found
For a traveller aged 72 to the USA, Sample Voyager Silver does not fit (its age limit is 70 and it leaves out the USA); the Gold plan does, with a 20% co-payment from age 71.
Section B, Emergency medical and associated expenses £10,000,000, excess £100
Medical expenses £10,000,000 with a £100 deductible (excess) on each claim
Common uses
- Choose between two travel policies before you pay, on what they really cover.
- Check that a policy meets the Schengen visa’s insurance requirement.
- See the sub-limits and co-payment a policy sets for a parent above 60.
- Find out whether skiing, diving or trekking is covered on your plan.
- Compare the plan columns of one insurer’s brochure against your own needs.
How values are read
- Benefit tables: the term’s name, then its amount in the same row; a deductible or excess column is read as the deductible of that benefit; a several-plan table is read in the column of the plan you choose.
- Caps and conditions: “USD 30 for every 6 hours, maximum USD 300” is compared at its maximum, and a limit per item stays a sub-limit, not the cover.
- Sentences: a co-payment, the longest trip, the age limit and the time to report a claim come from the sentence that names them.
- Exclusions: words found inside an exclusions section, or in a sentence that excludes (“we will not pay”, “not covered”).
- Not found means the words were not found: the comparison never guesses, and you can type the value.
What to check first
The UK government’s guidance on travel insurance lists what to look for: treatment in state or private hospitals, ambulance and emergency transport, a 24-hour helpline, repatriation if you or a family member die abroad, cover for every activity you plan, and declaring existing health problems, because not declaring one can invalidate the policy. In Indian policies, also read the sub-limits and the co-payment for travellers above 60: they can leave you paying much of a bill that is within the sum insured.
Insurance for a Schengen visa
A Schengen visa asks for travel medical insurance in your name, valid in every Schengen country for the whole stay, with a minimum amount of medical cover that also pays for hospital treatment, emergency care, medicines and repatriation, including in the event of death. Tick Schengen visa under Your trip and each policy is checked against that minimum, with the official figure and its source shown beside the box (the Netherlands’ checklist for India, the European Commission).
If a claim goes wrong (India)
Write to the insurer’s grievance cell first. If that does not settle it, register the complaint on Bima Bharosa, the regulator’s grievance portal. When the insurer has rejected the complaint, or not replied within a month, you can go to the Insurance Ombudsman within one year. The PDF report lists the steps with the details from both portals.

Limitations
- Values are read from the text of your documents: a scanned PDF without a text layer cannot be read (run it through PDF OCR first, or paste the text).
- Wordings differ: a value may be missed or read from the wrong line, so check each one against the page shown and correct it where needed.
- Amounts in two currencies are compared at the ECB reference rate, when this site has it.
- It compares what the documents say; it cannot tell how an insurer handles claims or how fast it pays.

Frequently asked questions
What do I get without a pass?
Without a pass, Travel Insurance Policy Comparison shows the count of terms found per policy and of terms that differ, with the first rows of the side-by-side table, the trip checks and the exclusions (up to 10). Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded or copied. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.
How do I compare two travel insurance policies?
Open both policy schedules (and their wordings, if you have them), or paste their text. The comparison lines up the medical cover, the deductible, evacuation and repatriation, pre-existing conditions, co-payments and sub-limits, cancellation, delays, baggage and passport cover, accident and liability cover, where each one applies, the age and trip-length limits and the exclusions, with the page each value came from.
What is a deductible in travel insurance?
The part of each claim you pay yourself before the policy pays, also called the excess: with a USD 100 deductible, a USD 1,000 bill is paid as USD 900. Some policies take it off every claim, some only off medical claims, and some plans have none.
What are sub-limits, and why do they matter?
Caps on parts of a hospital bill, such as the room a day, intensive care or surgery, often for travellers above 60. With a sub-limit of USD 1,000 a day for the room, a USD 1,800-a-day room leaves you paying USD 800 a day, even when the sum insured is far higher.
Does travel insurance cover pre-existing conditions?
Usually not, or only in a life-threatening emergency up to a small limit. The comparison shows what each policy says about it, and checks it against your trip when you tick “A pre-existing condition”. Declare the condition when you buy: not declaring it can make the policy invalid.
What insurance does a Schengen visa need?
Travel medical insurance valid in every Schengen country for the whole stay, with a minimum amount of medical cover that includes hospital treatment, emergency care, medicines and repatriation. Tick “Schengen visa” and each policy is checked against the official minimum, shown beside the box with its source.
Why does it not rank policies by price?
Because the cheapest policy can cost the most when you claim: a lower sum insured, a high deductible, a co-payment or a sub-limit shows only then. You can type each premium for your own reference; the comparison marks what is more in your favour term by term instead.
Are my policy documents uploaded?
No. They are read in your browser and nothing is sent or kept: close the page and they are gone.
