TAM, SAM and SOM, base case
The areas of the circles follow the sizes, so a SOM of 1% of the TAM is a circle a tenth as wide.

About the TAM SAM SOM Market Size Calculator
Size a market the two ways investors expect, side by side. Top-down starts from the whole market (TAM), takes the share your product and channels can serve (SAM) and the share of that you can win (SOM). Bottom-up builds it from customers you can serve, what one buys in a year and the share of them you can win — and, when you know how many potential customers there are in all, the TAM too.
Every input has a low, base and high case and a source note that travels with the result, so the estimate stays traceable in a pitch deck or business plan. Measure the market in money a year or in customers or units. The nested circles show the three markets to scale, and the page warns when the obtainable market is a larger share of the serviceable market than a new business could realistically win, when the two methods disagree, and when an input has no source.
In the free preview the base-case obtainable market shows in full; the other figures, the circles, the full table, the copy with sources, the CSV and printing come with a Pro pass. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
How to use it
- Choose whether the market is measured in money a year (and the currency) or in customers or units.
- Top-down: type the total market, the share you can serve and the share of that you can win. Add low and high cases where you are unsure; empty ones take the base.
- Bottom-up: type the customers you can serve, the price of one purchase and the purchases a year, and the share of them you can win. Add all potential customers for a bottom-up TAM.
- Write a source next to each number: a report, a census or business-register table, your own pilot data.
- Set the share of the serviceable market a new business could realistically win, and read the obtainable market, the circles, both estimates in every case and the warnings.
- With a Pro pass, copy the result with its sources, download it as CSV or print it; in the free preview these stay locked.
Examples
Total market 1.6 / 2 / 2.4 billion a year (low / base / high) · you can serve 15 / 20 / 25% · you can win 1 / 2 / 3% of that
SAM 240 / 400 / 600 million; SOM 2.4 / 8 / 18 million a year. The SOM is 2% of the SAM in the base case.
1,000,000 potential customers · 150,000 / 200,000 / 250,000 you can serve · 40 a month (12 purchases a year) · you win 3 / 5 / 8% of them
Each customer is worth 480 a year: TAM 480 million; SAM 72 / 96 / 120 million; SOM 2.16 / 4.8 / 9.6 million a year.
The bottom-up above with 15% of the serviceable customers won, and a realistic share of 10%
The page warns: the obtainable market is 15% of the serviceable market in the base case, above the 10% set.
Common uses
- A founder preparing the market slide of a pitch deck.
- A business plan or loan application that needs a market size with its sources.
- A product team checking whether a new segment is big enough to enter.
How it is worked out
- Top-down: SAM = TAM × the share you can serve; SOM = SAM × the share you can win.
- Bottom-up: one customer a year = price × purchases a year (in units: the purchases alone); SAM = customers you can serve × that; SOM = SAM × the share you win; TAM = all potential customers × that.
- Each case uses its own values; a low or high value left empty takes the base value, so you can vary only what you are unsure of.
- SOM as a share of SAM is checked against your realistic share. The two estimates are compared, and the page notes when their base-case SOMs differ by a factor of 2 or more.
Using it in a pitch deck or plan
- Show both estimates: a top-down number that comes from a report and a bottom-up one built from customers and prices you can defend.
- Put the sources on the slide or in an appendix: “Copy with sources” and the CSV keep every number with its source.
- Say when the SOM is reached (in year 3, in year 5): the obtainable market is what you can win in that time, not ever.
- Keep the cases honest: the low case should be a real possibility, not a formality.
The terms follow Blank and Dorf, The Startup Owner’s Manual: the total market, the market your product and channels can serve, and the market you can win.
Limitations
- The calculator multiplies the numbers you give it: it does not find market data, and the result is only as good as the sources.
- Market size is not a sales forecast; use the Sales Forecast Calculator and Financial Projections Maker for those.
- The realistic share is your own judgement; the warning only says when the SOM goes beyond it.

Frequently asked questions
What do I get without a pass?
Without a pass, TAM SAM SOM Market Size Calculator shows the base-case obtainable market (SOM) in full, with the first rows of each table (up to 3) and a watermarked chart; every other figure is hidden. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded, copied or printed. A Pro, Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.
What is the difference between TAM, SAM and SOM?
TAM is everyone who could buy this kind of product. SAM is the part your product, price, regions and channels can reach. SOM is the part of the SAM you can realistically win against competitors in a given time.
Which estimate should I lead with?
The page leads with the bottom-up estimate when it is complete, because it is built from customers and prices you can check; the top-down estimate is shown beside it as a cross-check.
Can I size the market in customers instead of money?
Yes: choose “Customers or units”. Then the bottom-up uses the purchases a year without a price, so with 1 purchase a year the markets are counted in customers.
Why does every input have a source field?
Because a market size is only as convincing as where its numbers come from. The sources print with the result and go into the copied text and the CSV, and the page notes inputs without one.
