About the Product Roadmap Maker (Timeline, Now-Next-Later & Swimlanes)

Build a product roadmap from your own items, or from the CSV or Excel export of the tracker or board you already use. Each item has a title, a theme, a lane (a team or a product), start and end dates, a Now / Next / Later bucket, a status (planned, in progress, done or at risk), a confidence and a link, and the maker lays them out three ways: a timeline with swimlanes by month, quarter (any financial year) or sprint, a Now / Next / Later board, or a release-by-release view. It adds milestones, a today line, dependency arrows, a legend and colours by status, theme or lane.

Switch the audience to Customer-facing and the same roadmap hides exact dates, confidence, links and "at risk": the timeline works in whole quarters and at-risk items show as in progress. Everything runs in your browser and your draft is kept on this device. Without a pass the roadmap shows as a free preview: a watermarked picture at preview size drawn from the first 8 items. A Premium pass draws all of it and unlocks the PNG, SVG, landscape PDF and 16:9 PowerPoint slide.

      How to use it

      1. Start from the example, press Start empty, or open Import from CSV or Excel and drop the export of your board or tracker (Jira, Linear, Azure DevOps, Trello, Asana, a spreadsheet): check which column is the title, lane, theme, dates and status, then Add or Replace.
      2. Edit any item: its title, theme, lane, dates (or Fill both dates with a whole month, quarter or sprint), Now / Next / Later, status, confidence, release, the items it waits for and a link.
      3. Under Roadmap settings, choose the view, the scale and range, the colour key, the look (light or dark) and, for quarters, the month your financial year starts.
      4. Pick the audience: Internal shows dates and confidence; Customer-facing hides them. Read the Checks under the roadmap: items that end before they start, dependencies that start too early, dates outside the range.
      5. Save your items as CSV or the whole roadmap as JSON at any time. With a Premium pass, download the roadmap as PNG, SVG, a landscape PDF with an item table, or a PowerPoint slide with the items in its speaker notes.

      Examples

A quarterly roadmap from a tracker export
      Input
Summary, Status, Team, Epic Link, Fix Version/s, Start date, Due date, Blocked by
Billing service, In Progress, Payments, Revenue, v2.0, 02/Mar/26, 30/Apr/26,
Invoices page, To Do, Payments, Revenue, v2.1, 04/May/26, 15/Jun/26, ENG-1
      Result
Lane “Payments” with two bars: Billing service (in progress, March–April) and Invoices page (planned, May–June), joined by a dependency arrow; themes, releases and dates read from the columns.
      The same roadmap for customers
      Input
      Audience: Customer-facing · View: Now / Next / Later
      Result
Three columns of cards with titles, lanes and themes only: no dates, no confidence, no links, and at-risk items shown as in progress.
Quarters of a financial year from April
      Input
Scale: Quarters · Financial year starts in April · an item from 15 April 2026 to 30 September 2026
      Result
The axis reads Q1 FY27, Q2 FY27 …: the item spans Q1 and Q2 of the year that ends next March.

      Common uses

      • Product managers turning a tracker export into a slide for the quarterly review.
      • Founders sharing a customer-facing Now / Next / Later roadmap without promising dates.
      • Agencies and consultancies planning a client’s releases by sprint, with dependencies.
      • Teams mapping several products or squads as swimlanes on one timeline.

Three views of the same items

      • Timeline: one swimlane per lane, bars from start to end on a month, quarter or sprint axis. Bars in a lane are packed into rows so neither bars nor their labels overlap; items marked as a milestone get a diamond at their end date, and standalone milestones get their own row. A dashed red line marks today, and arrows join an item to the items it waits for (dashed red when it starts before they end).
      • Now / Next / Later: a card per item in three columns. Choose an item’s column, or leave it on Auto: under way or ended is Now, starting within the next three periods is Next, the rest is Later.
      • Releases: a column per release, in the order of their earliest end date, then the items without one.

Importing from a tracker or spreadsheet

The import reads CSV, TSV and Excel files (.xlsx, .xls, .ods) and guesses each column from its heading — "Summary" or "Card Name" for the title, "Team", "Area Path" or "List Name" for the lane, "Epic Link", "Labels" or "Parent" for the theme, "Fix Version/s", "Iteration Path" or "Cycle" for the release, "Due date" or "Target date" for the end. Change any guess before you add the items.

Statuses are read from their words (Done, Closed and Resolved are done; Blocked and On hold are at risk; In Progress and In Review are in progress; the rest are planned), confidences from High / Medium / Low or a percentage (70% or more is high, 40% or more medium). Dates can be ISO dates, day-first or month-first numbers (the import detects which from values above 12, else follows your country), tracker dates such as 02/Mar/26 9:00 AM, or whole months and quarters ("Mar 2026", "Q2 2026"). Dependencies are read from a "Blocked by" or "Depends on" column holding the keys or titles of other rows.

      Customer-facing roadmaps

Roadmaps shown to customers are usually vaguer than the team’s own: the Customer-facing audience leaves out exact dates, confidence, links and notes, shows at-risk items as in progress, rounds the timeline to whole quarters and keeps your footnote (for example "Plans can change as we learn more"). Your items keep their real dates and statuses, so switching back gives the internal roadmap again.

      What the exports contain

      • PNG: the roadmap at twice its on-screen size (at most 8,000 pixels a side), for documents and chats.
      • SVG: the roadmap as a vector picture, sharp at any size and editable in vector editors.
      • PDF: a landscape page (A4, A3, US Letter or Tabloid) with the roadmap, followed by a table of every item, so the file reads and searches as text.
      • PowerPoint: a 16:9 slide with the roadmap, and every item as a line in the slide’s speaker notes.
      • CSV and JSON (your own items, always available): the CSV opens in a spreadsheet and imports back; the JSON keeps everything, settings included, to open here later.

      Limitations

      • The timeline shows at most 36 months, 20 quarters or 40 sprints at once: choose a larger scale or a shorter range for longer roadmaps.
      • Up to 400 items. Items without dates appear on the boards, not on the timeline.
      • The import reads the first sheet of a workbook and the columns you choose; it does not connect to a tracker or follow links, and a dependency that names an item missing from the file is left out.
      • The draft is kept in this browser only; to move a roadmap to another device, save it as JSON and open it there.

      Privacy

Everything happens in your browser: imported files, items and pictures are not uploaded. The draft is kept in this browser’s local storage until you press Remove the draft from this browser.

      Frequently asked questions

What do I get without a pass?

Without a pass, Product Roadmap Maker (Timeline, Now-Next-Later & Swimlanes) shows your roadmap on screen at preview size with a MySmartCoPilot watermark, drawn from its first 8 items. Until you unlock it, the result can’t be downloaded. A Premium or Ultimate pass, a one-time payment that never renews, unlocks the full result. The pricing page lists the passes and their prices.

What is a Now / Next / Later roadmap?

A roadmap without dates: items sit in three columns by how soon the team will work on them. It is often used for customer-facing roadmaps because it shows priorities without promising dates. Here you can set each item’s column, or let the maker place it from its dates.

Can I import from Jira, Linear, Azure DevOps or Trello?

Yes, from their CSV or Excel exports: the import recognises their usual column headings (such as Summary, Fix Version/s, Area Path, Iteration Path, Cycle, Card Name and List Name) and lets you change any column it guessed. It reads the file in your browser and does not connect to the tracker.

How are quarters of a financial year shown?

Set the month your financial year starts. Quarters are then numbered within that year and labelled with the year it ends in: with an April start, April–June is Q1 of the year that ends the next March, labelled by that year (Q1 FY27 for the year ending in 2027); with January, quarters are calendar quarters (Q1 2026).

      Do I need a pass?

To download the roadmap as PNG, SVG, PDF or PowerPoint, yes: a Premium pass unlocks every Premium tool. Without a pass you see a free preview of your own roadmap at preview size with a watermark, drawn from its first 8 items; editing, the import and saving your items as CSV or JSON are always open.

      Is my roadmap uploaded anywhere?

No. The roadmap is drawn in your browser and the draft is kept in this browser’s storage on your device. Nothing is sent to MySmartCoPilot or to any tracker.
